I much prefer this version to the one that made it on to the album. I also think the performance of You're A Big Girl now is more lovely than the later one, although it is a similiar version.
This is absolutely brilliant. Why oh why has Capital Records not released this as a whole LP????? I prefer all of the NY sessions-much more "folky." Anyone who thinks Bob Dylan couldnt sing-just listen to this.
this is the only version . i hold a 25 year old maton in my hand tuned to the way Dylan played this and i just get chills with the way its put together .
How can you guys prefer this version to the original? The original has one of Bob's greatest verses ('there was music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air...').
@Rossonero072213 I prefer the slower tempo of this one -- it gives the melancholy world-weary lyrics some much needed space to breathe (same thing with Idiot Wind from these sessions). By comparison, Dylan hurtles through the lyrics in the Blood on the Tracks version, giving the lyrics an incongruous cheeriness. That's my two cents, at least.
@Rossonero072213 this is the original recording..the more famous was.re recorded in minnesota around christmas..the 2nd version / faster / is the one on the LP/tape/cd
Seems a much more interesting piece when the point-of-vue changes, as the time-sequence does.
Just one person's 2¢.
It's always such a thrill to be able to see/hear the artists at work -- experiencing the alternate-versions & various stages of works-in-progress is a tiny bit like being able to peer right into the creators' minds.
Thank you, haiglovescheese, for sharing this here.
Imagine if the album version was never released but this was. We wouldn't think a thing of it, and if the new version was released we'd be saying things like "that sounds too rushed and frantic, not like Dylan at all". You bet we would. I like this version a lot.
vocal sounds uninspired. Like he's doing a sound check. Emotionless. I was hoping for better, but thanks for posting. Alternative versions of anything are always good to hear.

IIRC, the album version is all 1st-person?

its sounds more rushed through, missing a lot of emotions on the one to be the original

Like the album version far more.
This is compelling because it's dylan but it's to smooth almost smaltzy compared to the Minnesota stuff.
It's a folk song.
This version would feel at home on Nashville Skyline.

I prefer Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan and he always changes that ,becoz he hates to be THAT BOB DYLAN you wanthim t obe or eve nthink he is ,or is not!
He is alraedy himself . So clearly he just hates all of everybody...calling him
the-Bob-Dylan-as-we-know-and-want-him-jailed-in-his-image-by-nuts-like-you!
Be yourself , change more, live free ,live and let live. Y Basta!
Quit simple no?
