Just because Miike made it doesn't mean it's not a kiddy movie. It is a kiddy movie, no question about it. But it's also a family movie. There are scenes for the parents, there are scenes to make the kids cuddle up to the parents for security. If you think Miike only makes horror, yakuza and WTF movies, you're paying him a grave disservice.
This is one of the greatest Asian movie ever! Those who doesn't like to imagine better not watching this movie. I have watched it a few years ago yet I still think even any country in Asia, from India to Korea, still cannot match its CGI technology that is so breathtaking. Those who love fantasy and CGI technology, this is the movie that you don't need to let it go. That's why i'm so respecting Japanese and their cultures coz they know how to modernized their cultures. Japan, ashiteru!
i saw it a month ago on tv. x3 fell in love with the japanese supernatural. eccentric with horror elements. guess reading mangas+playing ragnarok online with ghosts/fairies/etc references lead to that.
eg. :DDD OMG A KAPAA LOL
never saw the beginning or end though... thought i'd try finding a copy somewhere.
My kinda movie then! If I can get through and enjoy "Eraserheader" and "Meet the Feebles", there ain't nothing that can't freak me out! Okay, maybe somethings....this one not so much.
Kiddy? This is a Takashi Miike movie. While I will say this is probably his tamest movie ever made, I wouldn't necessarily call it a children's film. There's a few parts in it (especially one part towards the beginning) that would really freak a child out.
@zmh24 also yasunori kato is an awesome and underrated villain from an unknown(in western countries)series of fantasy/horror novels called ''teito monogatari''
Im not saying it "IS" Kiddy, just that it looks it. The old one LOOKED creppy. Get what I mean? None the less all great movies...........Just wish I could get ahold of the dvd box set so I could see them all again.
This looks promising. Is this on DVD in Australia? I remember reading a import review for this film in hyper magazine, that was a couple of years ago, it should be out now right?
You're asking the wrong guy... I just uploaded this trailer because YouTube didn't have one that was subtitled, I'm not part of the group that localized it... granted the subs aren't terrific in this trailer, but it's better than one with no subs at all.
Im not sure if you've already seen this by now but if you have SBS which i think you would, the this movie is gna be on at 11:55 on Monday December 21st.
Shigeru Mizuki, the author of GeGeGe no Kitaro and the manga world's most revered creator of ghost stories......is in this movie, along with Kitaro HIMSELF!
And, of course, there is Yasunori Kato AKA the Japanese Dracula (though so much cooler) and inspiration for Vega/M. Bison from Street Fighter.
I freakin' love this movie! I also saw it by accident on TV, and was like, O.o. But then I was all smiles, and really enjoying it, and then the ending made me laugh, but also felt really...deep to me. *shrug* I won't give away the ending, but there's definitely the message that good is MUCH more powerful than evil, even when evil seems so overwhelmingly strong! <3
Yasunori Kato, the scourge of Tokyo and the inspiration for M. Bison from "Street Fighter", returns...and sadly, no one here in America will even care.
@aznricekracker I've ordered Great Yokai Wars, Last Megalopolis, and Doomed Megalopolis already and am waiting arrival. I take it that Teito Taisen and Teito Gaiden are not available with English subs, yet, right?
Sorry about that. I do have "Taisen", but only on VHS (the DVD is pretty expensive). A rip of "Gaiden" was given to me by a friend from Japan, but neither of us could find an English translation. I've been looking for subs for the "Teito Monogatari" sequels (as well as the spinoff movie "Tokyo Dragon") for five years now. Absolutely no luck everywhere I go to. Obviously, the sequels were never intended to be seen by an English speaking audience.
@aznricekracker Oh. Well, I would have really wanted to watch Taisen subbed. Also, I noticed someone else mentioned GeGeGe no Kitaro. I wanted to watch it, but when I read the Wikipedia article, I was confused at the many different versions. Could you please clarify for me? I really want to see Nekomusume in action.
That's a little more complicated. Unfortunately, I'm not terribly familiar with that series; however, it seems that the original GeGeGe no Kitaro anime was produced in 1968 (based on the manga obviously). Since then, there have been 4 (5) other animes continuing from that as well as a live action film. I'm sure we could look up pieces from the series on Youtube.
Oh, I know you do. Thank you for the support and keeping the enthusiasm alive. :)
Someday, Hiroshi Aramata and his works will hopefully be noticed by the mainstream and his stuff will be translated for all to read. But for now, everybody only knows his stuff through the movie versions and/or through references to it in other media.
For those wondering, Hiroshi Aramata was the author for the novelization of this film as well as the creator of Yasunori Kato.
