Probably the SMARTEST player of all time...won titles in 1957...1959...1960...1961...1962...1963...1964...1965...1966...1968...1969...the greatest winner in the history of sports...
@theoGnRfan I don't confuse emotion with fact.. Just because he played 50 years ago in the 60's with black and white TV people forget him. But he is the best. Greatest winner in North American history, and very versatile
what i'm saying is just that he's not the best ever.
he's the greatest defender ever, he's a top-3 rebounder ever and he's the greatest leader ever both vocal and on the court. but he's not the greatest player ever.
When Bill Russell took over as head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, I felt like the city had finally arrived. Sonics made the playoffs for the first time under Russell.
@greatgriffin68 If you could have first pick from all the players that have ever played - Smart money goes to Bill Russell. Not because of his numbers, but because the numbers of everyone you pick after him are going to go up.
@Brad1112223 2 NCAA Championship rings, 11 NBA Championship Rings, Compact ring signifying the quantity of his rings , Olympic Gold Medal, NBA 50 greatest players ring, NBA 35th anniversary all time team ring, NBA 25th anniversary all time team ring. So you were right he didn't have 13, he had 17 and an olympic gold medal.
Wow...to be coached by someone (for ten years no less) and to have never been told what to do by that coach is a remarkable and amazing statement. It is unfathomable. Isn't one of the coach's duties to "tell" his players what to do (and how to do it)? For Red to have allowed Russell to do whatever he wanted (beginning with Russell's rookie year) speaks volumes about Russell's talent and maturity. It also speaks volumes about Red, the coach and the leader.
I've always enjoyed listening to interviews with Bill Russell. He has such distinctive, hearty, and wonderful laugh.

the fact that bill is your role model and an awesome player, don't means he's the best ever player!

@blackezi3
i think there is no one that can argue that russell is the greatest winner in american sports, as you say.
that don't means though, that in terms of talent is better thatn wilt, kareem etc...

how can argue with 11 championships... role model or not. no one has ever done it or will do it. period@theoGnRfan
