As was pointed out by Tim Krabbé in his chess blog, the position is drawn after Nxe5+ Ne6!. In this position, Kh7 was a blunder. That move wouldn't have worked in Spassky vs. Bronstein, because of two pawns at c5 and d4. I've been told the director thought chess positions were copyrighted, so he removed these two pawns, but that small difference changes the whole dynamic of the game.
Or perhaps he was showing the reach of SPECTRE, by demonstrating that it could force MacAdams to throw the game.
Dont forget its the 60s everyone used it back then. All the older fellers in my Chess club tell me its about 10 times easier than Algebraic but I can never understand whats going on after the first 10 moves if I try and use it.
The game is from Spassky-Bronstein 1960. The position here is altered from the actual game score in that there are 2 white pawns missing-- one on d4 and another on c5. Bronstein made the same moves as in the film and lost, but only because of the 2 pawns. In this movie version of the position, McAdams could have drawn the game by playing Ne6 after the discovered check, NxB. Instead, he did, in fact, make the worst move with Kh7 which is a clear win for white. Love this scene!
The scene is slightly spoiled for Chess players, because the position is incredibly simple and completely wining for white its sort of made to look like a genius conception for Kronsteen when he moves the Queen, but it really isnt plus MacAdams helps him out by moving out of check in the worst way possible.
It is actually based on a real game between Spassky and David Bronstein though Bronstein, Kronsteen get it?
Yeah I've read it - the game in novel was also based on a Bronstein game but it was a Queen's Gambit Declined Meran - but in that game Bronstein played as black and drew.
Yeah Spassky and David Bronstein, Kings Gambit accepted - I was talking about the novel, which was written before that game was played and based on a different game.

Shouldn't they press the clock with the same hand with which they move ?Here they move with one hand and press the clock with the other one

@Dessan01 For some reason I was thinking about this yesterday, came home and put this film on to look at the position....
I also think that they could have thought of something better....
