I first didn't like this one.. but after attending Neurosis in concert and hearing someone scream the name of this song (they didn't play it though), i knew, he was screaming it for a reason.
People always scream for a reason.. and he was right :P
I'm trying to get to know Nuerosis, because I keep seeing them compared to groups I love, but I was expecting a bigger guitar sound. Anyone care to suggest some heavier Nuerosis stuff that I can sink my teeth into? gracias.
@brkdaice oh man its rough. especially with some of the other shit nowadays. i know some of the wierd acid metal i listen to nowadays makes it sound like there are aliens inside your brain having a massive orgy. and then you put on some shit like this, or meshugga, or cleric, and turn that orgy into a giant massacre.
i dont think i have ever heard a band play with more soul and emotion, its like they have been to another world or dimension and returned to share their amazing epic sublime experiences through their songs
dont forget that godspeeds instrumental and not 'metal' at all defintely similar but without being 'hard' i like gybe a little more than neurosis but yeah fans of one should definitely like the other. if you like the music in 28 days later - the first song is godspeed and pretty much the music is all about end of the world type shit like that
also check out A Silver Mt. Zion (godspeed members involved) also fans of neurosis would like ASMZ
No it was not a joke and not a mistake. If you like deep, introspective music, Dead Can Dance would appeal all open minded Neurosis/Tool/Isis listeners. However it does not appeal to you necrotool, just as Evanescence does not appeal to me dude! Yuck!
It took me about 5 continuous listens to really comprehend Given To The Rising, but I'm really feeling it now. It's a great record and is as strong as any previous work by this amazingly talented band.
Radiation Skankkk is totally right - Neurosis, along with Cult of Luna, Isis and Mastodon are REAL poets and creators - Total damned geniuses!! Have to Say That 'Times of Grace' for me is their masterpiece, followed closely by 'Sun'. Totally Epic reflective yet disturbing masterpieces.
Yes Neurosis were the first, and A Sun That Never Sets is one of the best albums of all time, but I have to say that Isis' Oceanic is a better album in my opinion. There is a lot more build up, tension, and the music itself is much more full and structured.
Still, nothing compares to Godflesh, even tho it's not quite as structurly complex as Nuerosis and Isis. Us And Them ftw!!
I can easily say. Isis have a nice structure in Oceanic, but I just find it gets bland and directionless in places, Through Silver In Blood has more texture, causes stronger emotions and is more attention grabbing. Isis to me are slightly over-rated since what you hear on the surface of the music is pretty much the sum total.
isis is a very subtle band tho...and oceanic a subtle album...what can you tell me its about if you think its so shallow? what is the albums meaning? and what of through silver in blood (btw I have and adore both I just want your answer)
I don't think Isis' Oceanic shallow, it is certainly deeper than a lot of modern music. I kind of gathered there was a slight death and rebirth concept running through the album, it feels as though it may join on to other Isis albums, many of the lines seem awkward for me to fathom. Through Silver In Blood is about the relationiship between darkness and light, and the ability and necessity of destruction for the dawning of new each new creation, in my opinion anyway.
Just so ye know, the concept is along the lines of a guy planning to kill himself, finds a lovely lady and falls in love.. Then finds out she's been having/is still having an incestuous relationship with her brother.. And the guy ends up drowning himself. Niiiice.
I must stress I do like Isis, and no, I don't know as much of the concept. But that is the point, I have given Oceanic a lot of listens, but it doesn't drag me in under the layers of sound like Neurosis does, so I never desire to capture the whole story of the cd. Also, I find the vocals to suit poorly with the music, since it is mostly melodic and easy going, even when it gets heavy. Except for the vocals which stay in aggro mode.
it's a mixture kinda slayer vocals and tool's videos that's pretty weird but i guess i like it ,'cause neurosis create atmospheres really deep , i like them, good job, and the video is'nt boring at all
You would be more beutiful if you were born with already a mustache! ;)
Songs (and ART generally) are created just following our feelings and things to say; don't care about the voice. Care about the atmosphere, the words, the rhytm or the guitar etc..
the voice is great. kinda like a desperate cry. its all revelant. it wouldnt make sence if he sang all vince neil like. anyone else would have to assume this vocal style.
on the same token you couldnt have some one like cris barnes of cannible corpse growl to this it would lose something as well. vox not being really important then mellow them in the mix behind the music like isis does sometimes, but its all atmosphere. example check out "vocal test" by integrity.
amazing, watchfire takes the cake in my opinion, but every song is really brilliant, they should make a video for the eye of every storm, or at least a live dvd, we fans deserve it
This song is so amazing... his vocal effort in this song is just flabbergasting... actually sounds like Steve Von Till singing, but its Scott Kelly... what do you think this song is about?
I dont know much about Neurosis, but after seeing this and 'Stones from the Sky', I can definitely hear some eerie, haunting black metal in them. Id love to hear a black metal band do some covers of them. Deathspell Omega, a known underground black metal band from France, plays black metal with Neurosis influences. I'll have to check more of them and, of course, Neurosis out. And the videos are great, as well. You can either get mesmorized in it or get lost in your own world.
this can not be emphasized enough, especially when a lot of people are getting into this post-metal stuff (isis, cult of luna, etc.), which i like as well, but i do not see these people crediting neurosis enough for inventing this sound, or giving them a listen to appreciate it. instead most of this recognition goes over to isis (unrightfully), and these guys have been doing this 10 or so years before any of those other bands considered starting anything like this.

Neurosis didn't invent anything. They created. They are creators. They pick up where bands like Pink Floyd left off.
The single most important band of our generation. Hands down.

billhicks8 4 years ago 2
Neurosis is my favorite band but you can't say that.
What isis has done with Oceanic is really close to the perfect album.
I'm sure Isis can't do better than Oceanic.
Like Converge with Jane Doe. They just have reached the top of perfection.
