i played bass in '96 when i was in the Marine Corps in a band that covered "Pull Me Under"....any chance you could do that one? So fucking fun for the whole band to play! Also....EPIC cover job here! Dream Theatre is SO FUCKING TECHNICAL.
@stmichelob LOL that's awesome what instrument do you play? Pull Me Under is epic I just saw them live this summer and they played that. Love that ending riff. This song is extremely fun to play, one of our favorites, and the funny thing is it took us WAY less tries to record this (2, 3 takes maybe?) than some of the other ones that are technically way easier like smooth criminal. Love that technical shit.
@ScottBowman1 back then I had the $300 Peavey 4-string that was so popular, and a Peavey...um...Black Widow amp. We also played Korn "blind", and had to use Blue Steels, fattest gauge possible when tuning so far down, just so the strings wouldn't rattle on the neck. Marine Corps Motto: "improvise, adapt, overcome."
@averagekid11 No shit. And he's playing as if he's reading a fucking book report on "Dick and Jane" as a college senior! Just bored out of his mind! Great job, again, fellas. POST A FUCKING UPDATED VID WITH VOCALS, DAMN YER HIDES!
i've watched every one of your guys videos and absolutely think u guys rock. Yall should play some live shows and head to louisiana i'd def. come watch!!!!!
You guys are hilarious! You can play this shit but also have vids of Basketcase and santeria? Lol!! That's cool diversity I guess but WTF? With that talent you shouldn't waste time with those other songs. I think the drummer did an exceptional job especially on such a limited kit. Guitar, very cool, but dude you have to include the palm mutes in the chords (0:27-0:42)on the main riffs. It just sounds empty when you don't do it.
I've been to 5 Dream Theater concerts but I never really heard John Myung's bad ass bass playing. Thank God you guys understand balance I am totally happy with hearing your bassplayer and you guys really killed it! Go on!
You shouldn't have to try hearing any instrument, if so... The mix is bad. Nothing to do with their sense of balance, but it sure has something to do with the FOH. So yes, this vid makes more sense.
I could only hear JM during his solos or JP's solos (because then - other than JR's rhythm guitar patch - there is no rhythm guitar). I have seen them in various venues including Heineken Music Hall (Amsterdam) which is outstanding, soundwize.
If you prefer to hear the bass rumbling louder than the rest of the band, that's just a matter of taste.
If you are trying to convince me that you have more experience than a group of people who have been on the road for over 20 years, then you are just a tad bit arrogant.
The concerts I've been on (SFAM, ToT and SC), were perfect in my ears, in terms of balance. The bass was audible, but not rumbling on par with the rest. Loud bass sounds clumsy.
Not trying to convince you of anything other than me and about 7000 other people questioning if JM was even plugged in each one of those five nights. At HMH he was audible but way overpowered by JP and JR. I don't prefer loud bass rumbling at all, but MoP was a long time ago. ;)
Just now one of my guitar students complained about the bass at a DT concert last wednesday. I wasn't there but he said the exact same thing: overpowered...
good technique is not with wrists, good technique is with the fingers. great drumming, but to me, it just seems like his wrists are like jelly... and i don't know about sound wise, but in this recording, his toms and kick sound dead..
Thanks man. Which part are you talking about? The song is definitley played in the right keys, and our instruments are tuned properly. For some parts I try to fill in for the keyboard and add a note to a chord just to make it sound fuller.
Right at the first set entrance its missing some stuff along the top of the chords, i think you're right, probably the keyboard stuff now that i think about it. The solo stuff at 1:45 is rough intonation-wise is it possible you're not in tune all the way up the fretboard? Are you in tune on the octaves as well? Cause when you're doing the solo stuff higher on the board you sound considerably flat.
Your opinion doesn't count idiot!!! just by look at the size of the drum set is already impossible to play this song but he can manage it well..Make comment in Your Gay Bar faggot..
Check out the tune :S But nice work... Keep going, guys!

You saying these guys have better understanding of balance than Dream Theater and their technicians do?
I've been to 3 concerts, and to be quite honest, if you can't hear JM's playing, you're not trying.

Great chops, hit the technical stuff really well.
Is it the recording or are they in the wrong key?
Or are some of the chords just off? Cause they sound in tune, but some of the chords aren't right or its the wrong key.
No offense meant it's a good video.
