Hi Chuck. It's nice to see a man with a passion for plants. Love the plants you have. I love gardening (veggies) but just don't have the green thumb for it. I am looking to buy a Fly Trap but know nothing about them, well, until now! I am so green with envy. :-)
Oh my gosh Chuck, if I ever meet you I'll buy that Venus fly trap for at least what it was worth when you bought it or if you didn't buy it then just think of a price you want and I'll be glad to buy it!
say you were to catch a rat or something, would it be smart to cut it up and feed little pieces to the plant (little shop of horrors moment) or would it kill it?
Growing venus fly traps in soil? Really? I think moss holds much more moisture, but I suppose you are welcome to your opinion. I grow mine in Spaghnum Moss with some Peat or Shedded Spaghnum moss. This is what most website vendors tell you to use as a medium. If you have success with other types of media, more power to ya! But this is the most common instruction. Peralite is for airating the soil. Since you dont want to have the soil dry out, I wouldnt reccommend that.
Raw Meat? Not sure that is a good idea, thats overkill as far as I am concerened. Going to the pet store and getting some baby crickets or blood worms is probably better than raw meat.
Your house is like my dream! Your plants are magnificent but I have a question as I'm interested in buying a venus fly trap. Can I use a non dirt material, I have a few plants in a homemade hydroponics ebb and flow, I was just wondering if I could plant venus tly traps on something like hydroponic clay beads?
@zeronamagem Venus Fly Traps like a moist wet material, so depending on the media you choose, it would have to be something fine that holds water and doesnt mold.
I lived in florida and bought a venus flytrap at Home Depot. I have no clue what kind it was but all i did was put it into a larg bowl of spaghnum moss and let it fill with rain water. I just let it fill up. I read that the flytrap could grow under water so I never drained the water... it grew like wildfire. bloomed and split. and being in florida it always had something to eat... traps where closed all the time... i just left it alone.
@deadreckoning3980 Yes they do love a LOT of water and Florida is good, but they will need a Dormant period for the Winter months. You might want to place them in the refridgerator for about 2-3months!
im just starting out growing fly traps if some one could give me some tips on real good proper care and how NOT to kill this awesome plant that would great
Check to see if there is a sodium content on the label. I would be careful about processed water. Distilled water is only 99cents a gallon at any grocery store.
is it okay if you feed it worms and rolly pollys sometimes flys? and is it okay to give it non clhorinated regular bottled water(no minerals) pls respnd
@ChuckStoreyOnTheWeb You can use perilite, also I have seen mixtures that contain pure silica sand. I use Spaghnum Moss and I had great results. Putting it in the fridge causes it to go into dormancy, so that is the right step in both questions.
hi, i got one and i do not know how to take care of it. i got a few questions.
how many insects do you feed each month? and what other tips do you have for me if i live in an apartment in a no snow country? oh plus my house doesnt have much sunlight. cheers!
@RagnaLoki Venus Fly Traps like as much sun as possible, so if you dont have direct sun, than you need to buy some grow lights! I grow mine in a small aquarium over the winter months with a bright light in the lid. They love to be outside in direct sunlight whenever possible. Good luck!
sorry wouldnt let me put the URL in for the light bulb, but it is a MarineLand, Natural Daylight Florescent Aquarium Lamp. It is enough to sustain the plant till next spring and I put it back outside. In Spring, it usually goes in a little shock and then in a month or so, they start to take off and get HUGE.
You are supposed to ONLY USE 100% Peat Moss. Initially it is a little hard to get wet, but once it is wet, it usually stays that way. I grow mine in an aquarium (in pots) with a florescent grow light, it is also placed in a north window. The proper grow bulb is crucial, you need one with a high output. For my 5gal aqaurium, which I have 5 3-4" pots in, I use a the following bulb:
@ChuckStoreyOnTheWeb Hi Chuck. You said that you only use 100% Peat Moss and I can obviously see that it works but why does the instructions that I read say to use a mixture of 50% Peat Moss and 50% Pearlite? Also is it necessary to put the plant into dormancy? I put mine into dormancy by covering it with plastic and putting it in the fridge from Thanksgiving until the second week in March.
@mstaten11 my instruction said that its 80 % of peat moss , 10 percent of pearlite and 10%of poor soil.Chuck is a little wrong because peat moss is only to cover the top or the surrounding of the plant as it is only to retain the moisture of the soil.
Venus Fly Traps cannot tolerate any nutrients of any kind. They like only rain water or distilled water (not tap water). The only food you should give them is from a bug like a fly or a cricket. I have seen my big ones eat a yellow jacket! I woudnt use hamburger meat, they know the difference. During the winter months, I usually go to the pet store and buy some baby crickets and store them in the refridgerator in a bag. They go to sleep in the fridge and then I can just pull them out as ne
Hey chuck im just now starting to grow my own fly trap and i have a few questions ide like to ask. 1. Im growing hydroponically, Any suggestions? 2. what nutrient and ph level would you use. 3 if not hydroponics. what soil do you use. 4. any tips? Hope you resond

I wouldnt use any water from the tap or any bottled water that contains sodium of any kind. So I would look at the label and see how "pure" it is.

Has to be Sphagnum Moss. Never fertilize your Venus Fly Trap. Also, always used rain water or distilled water. Never tap water.

what kind of soil do u use?
fm3081 1 year ago
As far as I can tell, other than full sun and proper soil/watering the most important thing for a fly trap is dormancy.
