Just 2 hours in his presence made me want to go to that university and study vocal) I am grateful I've experience such an event, as meeting him, in my life.

  • He's only 55, he'll probably be singing for some years to come.

  • Only 55?

    Are you sure,sir?

    ankhsnammon

  • yes, i looked it up online, you can check wikipedia, it gives more personal info about him, so dont worry your prince charming will be here for a long time to come...lol

  • yes, agorante. I listened to your posting of il lacerato spirito. I have that song in my repetoir as well. Great voice you have.

  • this is for all of you:with all my humbleness..I..a simple dilettante...dare to do my opinion:beauty after all.

    Expression after all.

i'm an ignorant..but...this version is so expressive.....so..perfect in terms of beauty!

and we,simple mortals, whom don't understand anything about vocal technique...we...we need..we ask for beauty and sensitivity.

and this master have both of them.

Forgive me,sirs..I am not a conaisseur...

    Respectfully

    ankhsnammon

  • well, i can tell you that he has wonderful lasting technique

  • sir,i'm honoured by your response.

    thanks.

and,yes,indeed..he seems to have not a lasting..but an everlasting! technique!!!

    ankhsnammon

  • By the way..how old is this professor now?He must be near of his 70...isn't it so?

    ankhsnammon

  • i also sang with him in a masterclass back in 2001, at Florida International University School of Music, and yes, he is intense and very knowledgeable about the voice, pretty nice guy. very approachable.

  • now if you said a high B, then that would be exceptional for a baritone.

  • i understand your point agorante, but an F is not high for a baritone, a well-trained bassocantante can hit an F. I am a bass and have an F.

  • Yes of course. I too have a high F (even a G). Listen to my Bass Low Notes posting - e.g. the cadenza from a high F to a low C. The point is that all F's are not the same.

The best version of this aria on YouTube is probably the one by Peter Mattei. He sings a final high F that I certainly could never sing, any more than I could sing the "Se Voul Ballare" high F's like Siepi. Softer is harder.

    BTW - I love Chernov's voice.

  • And I love all his being.ALL OF HIM.

    ankhsnammon

  • You are awesome!I love reading your comments

  • Thanks,sir..or madame!

You're gentle ..very gentle with me...

    ankhsnammon

  • It's interesting to note the differences in pronunciation between Hvorostovsky and Chernov. I find Chernov to sound more italianate in his vowels especially. The sound seems clearer. Dmitri's sounds warmer. Each will have his fans!

  • I'm sure everyone here has compared this version to that of Hvorostovsky. Yet no one has pointed up the very obvious difference - Chenov skips the high F at the end of the aria.

I heard Chernov in his US debut. I was struck with the beauty of his voice but he didn't know how to get to the top. A few years later he had mastered the high notes and became the primo baritone at the Met.

He left the Met. I suspect he was never a high baritone at all - like Terfel. Hear his "My Way".

  • i am pretty sure that there isnt high f at the end of this aria.i suppose that it has been added.i prefer the way the composer wrote, it is a more normal ending after a lyrical phrase, not suddendly a high note on mietshti =illusions.

  • Exactly. The aria is written solely with the low F, no high F (not even written as optional). Hvorostovsky does that on his own. It's not traditional, but it does sound good.

  • Are you Riccardo Muti in disguise? Why so puritanical about high notes?

As I remember about half of the recorded Onegins go up at the end of the aria and the other half don't. Somebody do a count.

Like Verdi said to Tamberlik about his amendment to Di Quella Pira - "Yes but it had better be a good High C".

  • right you are

  • youre crazy

  • Yes, but my doctor's say I'm getting better.

  • Eugen Onegin, bella musica cantante di un

talento temperamento forte virile, bel timbro di

    voce canta con estrema facilità.

  • WOW. Could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE update the final scene of Onegin with those two? :)

  • My dear...i don't have the complete recording....unfortunately!!!

Specially,I love the duel scene ...and,the end of the opera...God!...it is a masterwork of Chernov ' s acting!!!

    Nina(ankhsnammon)

  • Beautiful voice,perfect breathing....Warning,Dmitri!!!!

    Ankhsnammon

  • lol, he doesn't stand a chance against hvorostovsky. for me. there's another great baritone named Andrew Fernando. check him out!

  • I will go to see him.

But I have a special predilection for this singer...

    Nina(ankhsnammon)

  • what? who is nina?

  • I am Galantha nina, from argentina...but with hungarian origins...between various others...there are same different blood running across my veins!!!

but all the people knows me here as "Ankhsnammon_"

  • Hvorostovsky was "born to play Onegin" as some critic said.

  • Lies!!!

    Hvorostovsky can't play...NOTHING!!!

    He's a failure!!

A product of the show biz...nothing more!!!

    Chernov is a MASTER!!!!!

(And his handsomeness is NATURAL,not a ridiculous product of surgeries!)

    nina(ankhsnammon)

  • I had the opportunity sing for him a yeaer ago in a master class. He is INTENSE to say the least. His understanding of the voice is absolutely amazing. Not only does he know HOW to sing, he know to to TEACH singing. Bravo for posting a clip of this great artist
