  • Ireland has a LOT of different accents depending on the location, but everyone pronounces the à as a long "aw", I've never heard it with an "eh"

  • I like 'mulkeen7' above - they must be from Ireland, because even though I'm American/only part Irish decent, I know it's slawn cha! It galls me when someone would post a youtube video and not have it correct. (Sorry to "pronunciationbook" but you should get it right before you give advice on youtube. I do not think there is a correct "American" pronunciation of a Gaelic word!

  • See that thing over the "A", that's a fáda. That makes the letters sound different.

    "Á" = Aw

    "É" = ay

    "Í" = ee

    "Ó" = oh

    "Ú" = oo (As in woo)

    Just a tip, not being a smart arse :)

  • @beastman93 -- thank you, I like hearing this! You are NOT a smart ass! (arse) ;)

  • From Dublin and I've never heard it pronounced like that. It's slawn-cha.

  • WTF? He said Slap Chop

  • Why is everyone saying he is wrong. I speak Irish and that is precisely how sláinte is pronounced.

  • @unecachettehumide I have spoken Irish for the last 8 years and I and everyone I know pronounce it like this. I have visted the Donegal gaeltachts every summer for 5 years and all the gaelgoers there say it like that. It is pronounced differently in different provinces and dialects but that does not make this pronunciation "wrong" in any way.

  • @DJMCoops "á" is pronounced like aww

  • @beastman93 Where I'm from "á" is pronounced "aah" or "ehh". A good Irish speaker knows there are different dialects and many correct ways of pronouncing words.

  • Well in Scotland it's more Slan-ge but the guy hasn't got it too far off. Marillion do a track called Sláinte Mhath and you can hear it quite clear. Their singer (Fish) says it the way I hear everyone saying it.

  • Nah, it's Se-lunch-ah. It's not an English word.

  • wrong, wrong, wrong. more like slawn cha

  • @mulkeen7 Nope he is absolutely spot on. That is how I say it

  • @DJMCoops á = aww

  • @mulkeen7 nope á = aah

  • @mulkeen7 -- good for you! I gave a comment also.
