  • i think that you just can hydrolis the aspirin with sodium hydroxide to salycilicacid

  • @thegodofchemistry

Yea, that is one possible route . . .that method will give you the salicylate dianion. I just used HCl here as I have a lot of it in stock but at the time of filming was very low on reagent grade NaOH.

  • how many grams of aspirin did you use

  • @thegodofchemistry

    5 grams.

  • but its still a problem for me i just make my movies with my iPhone so its very bad quality because i can't pause wen I'm filming

  • @thegodofchemistry

Thats fair enough, but I suppose that as long as you narrate you could get away with just having still pictures.

  • in my country sweden we can't get sulfuric acid in the hardware store and i don't have a reflux condenser but i will try to build my own

  • @thegodofchemistry

Are you sure you can't get sulfuric acid? Have a look in the hardware shop, where it will be sold as drain unblocker. Try looking in the car parts shop, they could have it for batteries (although you'll need to concentrate it. Try it on eBay . . . I've bought hydrochloric and acetic acids from there as well as methanol, isopropanol and many more. Failing that, you could try making your own; see NurdRage's channel for many ways of producing it.

  • @98JMA

Sorry, didn't realise you said you can't get it ay hardware shops the first time.

  • @98JMA yeah i just got some sulfuric acid but still i have no reflux condenser

  • @thegodofchemistry

OK, in this case you might just get away with having a large round bottom flask of ice-cold water on top of a beaker instead of the condenser, as long as you are very careful about fumes.

  • @98JMA god idea

  • @thegodofchemistry

Of yourse you may suffer some yield, but as long as the water in the cooling flask is really cold, it shouldn't make too much of a difference. If you make a video let me know and I'll add it as a response to this one so that more people will see it and you get the subscribers you deserve.

Also, please don't hesistate to contact me if you have any more questions or ideas, I'll be happy to help:)

  • also get a fume hood. i worry for your safety

  • @TheChemlife

Well . . .thanks, I guess. I would have done it outside but it was REALLY windy and I didn't fancy risking my reflux equipment. How do you exhaust fumes?

  • @98JMA i have a proper fume hood

  • @TheChemlife or i do it outside

  • @TheChemlife

Wow . . .did you buy it or build it yourself?

It's not mentioned in your lab tour . . .

  • @98JMA built it. in about 3 months you'll see a new lab tour. but im in the process of shutting down the old lab in preparation for the move atm which is why there haven't been many real chem videos for a while

  • @TheChemlife

That's understandable, I assume you've got a lot to pack up from the old lab!

Would it be possible for you to make a video on the construction of your hood, I was planning to make one myself but need some guidance for the shape and exhaustion/filters etc.

What do you actually use to pull the vapours away (a fan etc.)

  • @98JMA i wont do build video but i'll show how it works once it's done. and yes ill add it as the video response. you seem like a good kid and i know how hard it is when you first start. hell i'm still just starting.

  • @TheChemlife

I'm 13 and get a lot of inspiration from watching your stuff! (Love your giant, insane condenser BTW)

  • @98JMA just be safe and i'll keep an eye on your channel. if you make good stuff i might even put you in my channel box. and ya the condenser is fun. defiantly more than i bargained for when i bought it. doesn't work very well for reflux though

  • @TheChemlife

    Thanks for the kind words:)

My condenser pump wasn't actually strong enough to pump water through it (it only works for lower-down distillations), so, although you don't see it in the video, it wasn't even turned on and I had loads of soaking paper towels around the top to cool it:)

  • Respond to this video... P.S. Could you possibly add this video as a 'Video Response' on your (much better) video and maybe subscribe, I really need the big YouTube amateur chemists' help!

  • please get a better mic. that was hard to listen to.

  • @TheChemlife

Ok, thanks for the suggestion. What mic do you use?

  • @98JMA well the one built in to my laptop is pretty good so i dont use one, but for you i think you might just be talking to close to it.

  • @TheChemlife

I used the one in my laptop for every one until the second-most recent one, until I realised that the sound was actually awful. I'll try what you said for the next video:)
