The fundamental flaw of this argument is imputing Christ's righteousness onto the Psalmist. The psalmist is a fallen man, condemning his enemies with startling uncharity. Christ was the true man, condemning his enemies righteously. Conflating the two leads the author down the dangerous path of not only failing to condemn the unabashed hatred of some of the Psalmists, but even to approbating it in the name of Christ.
BUT, the LION that is the True Lamb, and not the fake Jesus (the "thing") worshipped by the Kings of the Earth, also has moments in which his most inner heart, his LION HEART, cries out upon this spiritual cross "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do".
most the Psalms are the HEART of the LAMB amidst the LIONS. these lions are ferocious and wicked. POWERFUL, they are NOT MEN. THEY ARE DEMONS (GODS). they are the CORRUPT GODS or "SONS OF GOD" of Psalm 82, the spiritual hosts of absolute wickedness in the heavenly places. and these psalms are the crying heart of he "who descended" to be tormented by these punks.

Ok,...What about when Isaiah was called baldy by some people he came into contact. He cursed them there & then, & they were ripped to shreds as his curse requested! Was/Is Isaiah wrong for seeking revenge for being called Baldy? God answered Isaiah's request. So we can see there is a right place for revenge in righteous anger. Do NOT mess with God,.. He Is NOT ONLY love, but righteousness & Justice in GREAT measure & totality.
The psalms do not make any claim to be thoughts or commands of God. Some psalms have become known as the cursing psalms. They give us insight into human nature. Christ did not apply every psalm to himself. The great thing about the bible is that it doesn't sugar coat it's subjects. Psalmists, and prophets were fallible humans. So let's learn the right lesson from this psalm...even holy men are cab able of hatred and sin. That's why we need Christ.
everyone should do themselves a favor and never pay any attention to andrew bain at all. arguing with him encourages him, its the fuel to his fire, dissension is the reason his ministry exists.(romans 16:17) tells us to stay away from these type of people "such people are not serving the Lord but their own appetite.he has been doing this for a long time and he has been warned many times.he is not gonna repent for his ministry.may God help him.just pray for andrew theirs nothing more we can do
@FollowTheCloud I would suggest you read the whole verse including the one you attempted to quote. Romans 16:17 says that those causing dissension are causing them "contrary to the teaching which you have learned". It is referring to what's actually being taught. Are these preachers teaching the truth or not?
Because according to your logic, Paul shouldn't be preaching against dissension, otherwise he would, himself, be causing dissension.
At least Alicenotinchains admits truth doesn't matter.
@riderwalker101 the answer is yes, c.s. lewis is orthodox, he has gone down in christain history as being one of the greatest minds of christinity and one of the great contributors to the body of Christ.andrew bain has done nothing positive for the body, he has dedicated his ministry to taking good preachers out of context and distorting them, he is not serving God he is serving his own agenda.he will go down in history as a dissenter not a great man of God.lift him up if you care for him
People get over your religion. Can anyone be trusted to not-misquote? I don't know if true or not but lay down religion, believe the Gospel & the Bible & share the Gospel People are dying every second & not saved!!!
This book was published in 1967. Lewis died in 1963. This book was published after his death and was probably his diary from before he became a Christian.
I'm going to assume you also think that homosexuals are evil, Barak Obama is the antichrist, and that God meant everyone except YOU should refrain from judging. AMIRITEORWAT?
The root of this person's attack on CS Lewis is quite simply jealousy. The fact that he attacks him and is so obsessed with twisting his words to discredit him is a symptom of the jealousy, envy and darkness in his own heart.
C.S.Lewis was not an evangelical. But he definitely was a Christian. He was not believing in Satan in disguise or any other new age nonsense. He has written some of the greatest apologetics for the Christian faith. He didn't get everything right (who does apart from Christ?). But he has done some brilliant work in Christ for the gospel. Next time you go to criticise someone, think again, and if you must do it in grace and love not arrogance. God bless.
You misunderstand him quite flagrantly. You speak from a fundamentalist point of view. He speaks from a Christian point of view. The two points of view are quite different. His is spiritually scriptural. Yours is merely biblical. Read his defences of Christianity before you tarnish and un-sainted saint.
C.S. Lewis is the greatest layman Christian apologist that has ever picked up a pen. You certainly chose a worthy title to draw in loads of people to your video. It is a shame that you are unqualified, by any stretch of the imagination, to critique the writing of Lewis.
Just like uncle andrew they will pretend only hearing a roar but actually it is really a wonderful song.they will believe what they choose to believe..only they can help themselves on this..
LOL... IT'S FUNNY. HOW THE DEVIL CAN USE YOU AS AN INSTRUMENT TO TRY TO PICK OUT STATEMENTS SO YOU CAN JUSTIFY YOUR CHOICE TO BE A HATER... ONE DAY YOU'LL STUMBLE ACROSS THE HOLY GHOST AND WAKE YOU UP.. BECAUSE WHAT THE DEVIL IS MEANING FOR HARM, GOD WILL TURN IT AROUND FOR GOOD. SO GO AHEAD KEEP STUDYING THESE SCRIPTURES&LEADERS ONE DAY YOU'LL BE LOVING ON GOD EVEN HARDER LIKE SOMEONE THAT PLAYS WITH FIRE. THEY'LL BE ENFLAMED WITH FIRE. ON YOUR PART IT'S THE HOLY GHOST FIRE. LMBO :) ENJOY...

Andrew, with all due respect, when it comes to evaluating great Christian minds you are about as well placed as a pickpocket in a nudist camp. Give it up son.
he did not say the Bible is wicked, but yes these are things of Christ and not David himself. David was merely a prophet nevertheless God is a righteous judge. The Bible tell us to fear the Lord is to hate sin (proverbs). In psalms it tells us God hates workers of iniquity. Not that God hates the very person themself but hates the works of iniquity so much as to be angry with the wicked (the person) everyday about it. God corrects and rebukes out of love because He wants us to be right.
Also, the Bible is not the Word of God. That would be Jesus. The Bible is just our road map, to help us on the way to meeting Jesus. It is inspired by God for this purpose, and, along with the Holy Spirit, is the best way of seeking God. It's also curious that this video maker is picking & choosing what to pay attention to from Lewis' words. Read the whole book, Reflection on the Pslams (where this stuff comes from) and you'll understand what Lewis was really saying — not this, for sure!
Where did you ever get the idea that the Psalms were the words of Jesus? This idea has never been a part of Christian orthodoxy. The Psalms were mostly written by David. As the Bible clearly shows, David was a very flawed individual. What does it prove to say that David, a Biblical character, sinned? Look at every Biblical character: all save Jesus sinned! That's kind of the point of the Bible.
everybody throw away cs lewis and a w tozer and take up the great bible teacher AndrewcBain. tozer and lewis' paltry, satanis attempts to help you unterstand the Bible are unworthy, only AndrewcBain can interpret Scripture rightly. NOT.
This is a very valid video. It doesnt make me like or respect Lewis any less, however. As you said, he really does write out his thoughts and he was one of the deepest thinkers and writers of the last 100 years. even if he is off on this point, he was a true man of God, and his writings were definitely inspired by the Holy Spirit. This is a very interesting issue though!
almost sounds like what happened to Yeshua,,,he was under the rule of the wicked pharases, he had his agent provacateur/secret police by his side all the time, he was murdered and died an early death at 33y/o and his brothers the Apostles were all persecuted, his mother suffering much sorrow GOD put his son through this same thing if its good enough for Jesus may GODS will be done and may it all be for GODS glory even unto my death
Was it ok for David to hate other people" Clearly not. But the Psalms show that he did. What would you have him do? do a Lewis and SHOVE THEM (his hateful thoughts) BACK? or let it hang out before God.
Was thre psalmist blameless? clearly not. BUT HE THOUGHT HE WAS
If we christians are carnal we can and do hate others, or think ourselves blameless. to pretend not to is the leaven of the pharisees and it is the royal road to blaspheming the Spirit, See galatians. legalism is DANGEROUS
Lewis never said the Bible was wicked. But did his thought imply such?
To be honest, Lewis is good as an apologist, but regards christian living he did not knon what he was talkingabout. He said in Mere Christianity "SHOVE THEM BACK" ie unbelieving thouights, and also "LETS PRETEND" thinking that pretending to love will produce love.
both of these are will of the flesh, legalism and hypocrisy
if these are david's rage "are the Psalms the word of God" Mr Bain asks?
The Bible is the words of many persons, God, Kings, demons, atheists ("the fool said there is no God") pagans. But these psalms are included in scripture as part of God's overall communicative purpose - not to endorse the evil but for a reason i have suggested. I am not saying this is all psalms, some are prophecy, PS 22.
so YES they are part of the Word of God even when God did not say these things
Mr Bains resonse fails. This psalm cannot be the prayer of Jesus, and why? the psalm WANTS the evil man to be damned, or Babylonians babies to be smashed on rocks. to make this the prayer of Christ is to make christ as hateful as the psalmist. But what does scripture say about God in this matter? he is not willing that ANY perish.
resentment is sin, yes, and if you ARE resentful? are you damned? or will God hear you if you cry to him for mercy
a THIRD position: a warts and all record of the emotions man can have, to encourage us that we CAN confess these to God and be forgiven for them. Lewis AND this speaker are IMO wrong
Yes, cursing is wrong. NOW, given that we do curse them in our hearts, are we to pretend to the contrary?
IF so WHY are the psalms in the word of God? to show that we can and MUST be honest to God, and He will hear us if we cry to Him mercy. it is a chronicle of the experience of man, including self righteous viciousness
I reject completely the notion that this psalm is the prayer of Christ
You seem to like to twist the Bible and what other's have to say. Why would you want criticize? I think you should be encouraging people to come to Christ and stop wasting your time and breath on trying to bring others down.
I dont know much about Andrewcbains but this seems like Arm Chair Theologians hour..Beginners Night. The title is decietful..it makes you think you will hear Lewis, not a commentary by a little person preteding to critque him.. Next...Lewis never said in Christian reflections that The Bible was Wicked. ...he said the writers of the impreccatory Psalms had wicked attitudes. Thirdly he did not say these Psalms were not part of the Bible...he recognized them as part of the Sacred Word.
Horrid and quite predictable from the very first utterance of words...Clearly the underlying messages of this video is anti-Christian, pre-meditative evil, and and conjured up for the purpose of strengthening Andrewcbains dark and demented views on Christianity.
This illustrates the so-often personal wranglings of interpretation-the Bible is a patch-work of different writings from equally different periods of time, and from individuals all claiming divine inspiration-we have the Judaic old testaments, and the apostolic new testaments-the messages are inconsistent, and variable; Lewis really is unwittingly recognising that variability of message-and, rightly ,questioning the morality of hatred-it is all Mythology.
Yes, there are. The apostle Paul spoke of another gospel and another Christ. And the context of the question implies that people sometimes believe incorrectly about Christ.
@pharmfarm59538 ...Yeah....Paul spoke of "workers of iniquity" that were already scheming to dismantle Christianity. After the crucifiction there were a great deal of folks that hated this Messiahs teaching...they are still with us. The bible says we will meet Jesus "in the air" after the rest of the believers are ressurected from the dead. So if you see someone doing great miracles and saying that he is the christ...break out your camping gear.
As I watch your videos...I am convinced that you are a tool of satan. You are attempting to at as though you are an intellectual but reality is that you are simply a TOOL of satan.
THAT IT SOOOO WEIRD! An Atheist has twisted and manipulated the words of a Christian in order to meet his own agenda! Someone call CNN, this is huge! - "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent." 1 Cor. 1:19.
Right, naaragonzalez. Lewis criticizes the Psalmist, the name given to the author of the Book of Psalms. The Prophets, Jesus, Paul, these criticize people justly, even if they come on MUCH stronger than most are used to (part of the reason people rejected what they said, I imagine- I can't blame 'em, in many ways, and I can't say I'd have done much different). The Psalmist, however, calls for God to smite his enemies, etc. (the Psalms are much like a journal or, rather expressive art).
You are all looking into a something that isnt there, he wrote fantasy stories to help him understand the horrors both he and Tolkien witnessed in the first world war, They both needed to see and re evaluate humanity bless them, and through there works we have all been in awe and benifit from there self induced therapy
Psalms like 109 are called "Curse Psalms" which were written in the time of the Jews' exile to Babylon. They show the ultimate anguish and despair of a people who saw their future in shreds.
Imagineyour country, dear reader, invaded and taken over, seemingly never to be seen again, and you are carried off to a distant country, with no hope of return.
I honestly don't get it... I've perused this guy's little section of YouTube for about fifteen minutes and have narrowed it down to two possibilities: One, he's just trying to work through some of the things he considers contradictions; or two, he's straight evil doing the bidding of some demon to skew the Word. I'm leaning towards the last one, cause I'm an avid reader of Lewis and not even a drunk monkey would come up with this nonsense.
CS Lewis was a good man who touched the hearts of more people than you will ever lay your eyes on in you life time. And for that he resides in paradise with a God that is all knowing and all loving.
Okay, so I didn't listen to this all and I wrote him a personal message saying that he took it way out of context and that since he wasn't going to give it a fair shot that I would look it up and get back to him. I think you ALL should see this:
well whatever... it's not showing up maybe it got posted and it's being weird... search google for the exact quote and then have it show all the results and you can find it in google books and it's VERY clear that he's not calling the Bible wicked, he's calling the things the PSALMIST wanted wicked, which is fine because the PSALMIST is HUMAN and capable of wickedness....
..Who cares what C.S Lewis thought....The words of Jesus are for all to read for themselves and understand. Look up to Jesus..not some guy that society has placed on a pedestal.
I somewhat agree. But it's not right to say these things about a good man and a good christian who contributed a lot to this world. Of course we should look to Jesus, but that doesn't mean we should ignore people like Lewis or throw them to the wolves.
...I think CS Lewis was mixed up in theosopy and the occult...same thing with JR Tolkien. He did on occasion say some profound words...he also said some very kooky things as well. Was he a good man?...I don't know. I do know his work is popular with occultists and the cannabis set. I'll have to dismiss the guy as irrelevant to sound Christian doctrine....and let God be his judge.
@pharmfarm59538 ..I think he was mixed -up in the occult. He and his buddy Tolkien were admirers of Blavatsky and her secret doctrine. The Cronicles of Narnia is not a Christian book and was a prelude introduction aimed at unsuspecting parents to read to thier children. He was a clever fellow....I'll give you that.
I have read over the majority of his the books he wrote. I dont know where the occult acusation comes from. He stood in the mainstream of Christian orthodoxy and defended the historic doctrines of Christianity.
@pharmfarm59538 ...In his books.."Beyond Personality" (1945) and ...."Mere Christianity" (1952).....He states that the God of the bible will turn us into "gods and goddesses". The bible does not say that nor even imply that. That is Luciferian doctrine....not Christian doctrine.
And if we were having a book reading we could discuss what he meant by that.....again he stood within the mainstream of orthodox Christianity. In fact he spent his life after his conversion defending it. Before your comments I have never heard the absurd accusation that he was involved in the occult.
@pharmfarm59538 ....Do a little background checking on Mr. Lewis, it is fairly common knowledge concerning his affinity with the occult. If you want to know what a person thinks....read what they write. It is quite obvious what Lewis believed. I guess if by "mainstream orthodox Christianity"....you mean, those that have never read the bible...than I suppose you may have something. lol
What does "fairly common knowledge concerning his affinity with the occult mean? I have read almost all of the books he wrote and own over half of them. I saw no connection to the occult in his books. He did write a lot of allegory and fantasy. " The mainstrem of Christian Orthodoxy" means that you believe what historic Biblical Christians have always believed....and no it doesnt mean you never read the Bible....Where did you get that bizzare and crazy idea?...
@pharmfarm59538 ..Anybody that thinks that the God that created us..is going to turn us into gods and goddesses...is either extremly naive or intentionaly lying...so which is it? Ever heard of Helena Blavatsky? Try googling her name together with his name...and see what you come up with.
Could it be that you don't understand him? I honestly dont have time to interact with you or evaluate others who attack Lewis' He often used analogy, symbolic thoughts, fantansy, and parables to make theological points. Some are uncomfortable with this, but they are mistaken if they think is he is some kind of satanist or occult leanings. He believed in a literal personal devil and wrote books to help Christians deal with the reality of evil. It is a serious sin to attack a Christian brother.
I think the uploader of this video has seriously misunderstood something that C.S. Lewis has meant.
As someone has said - read 'Mere Christianity' by him... I would add 'slowly and thoughtfully' as yes, he is deep - so there is no more misunderstanding.
I agree with you, I have read everything that Lewis has written and after watching two of this guy's videos...my thought, he used Lewis' name in the video title to get views he never would have gotten otherwise. He doesn't know anything about Lewis or his beliefs.
Correct- the poster seems to be a professional critic of everyone else's theology. I occaisionally agree with him when he picks on someone I disagree with- but he does it so oftenb it makes me wonder who he does like.
A lot of very conservative people like to criticize other Christians. It makes them feel important. Mostly it is spritiual pride. They want to be the only ones.
A Christian is not as free and others are, We are obligated to follow find the truth and pursue it. Especially when it comes to evaluating a fellow Christian.
S.c.a.r.l.e.t.C.r.o.w. = "Stating compliment's abundantly relished, leaving encouragement to Creativity revealed on web"
God bless you..... You made my day! I do this all over the world-wide web and can make some acronymic phrases in a matter of seconds or just a couple of minutes. I want to do this for a Christian T-shirt/bumper sticker/poster company. I have a lot of catchy phrases....
I don't follow your logic. Why would you title the video that way? I feel for you to be responsible with such a worthy question you need to be more responsible with your title. To say a wicked man wrote something in the scriptures does not mean the bible is wicked.
I've been looking through your videos and all you seem to do is condemn. Even Jonathan Edwards writes in "religious affections" that preaching only condemnation and negative subjects is WRONG. Read the book carefully. This is the guy who preached "sinners in the hands of an angry God". I know we need to be careful about misguiding teachings - but creating this much emphasis on fighting them is becoming even more subject to them than someone who would actually believes them.
You must look at this from his point of view. C.S. Lewis translated the Bible into a child's perspective. So that they can understand, cause most childern cannot comprehend the Bible it's liturature is most complex.
So if Jesus said it, it is just? It never fails to amaze me that people can be so low in spirit as well as intellect. Sad. Do you really think Applonious of Tyana was invented by Satan?
Oh, no, not more tortured logic. One imagines that hell will contain a special place where logic undergoes unending torture, just so that evangelical doctrines can make some sort of sense.
Men cannot say anymore, "the bible says..." for today we have houndreds of "interpretations". Its a matter of figuring out which is the correct. I truly believe the bible, as was originally written by prophets, was a pure and correct source. Today we simply have a copilation of what could have been words of prephets...mixed with words of worldly intellectuals. I respect your view on Lewis, but I opt to side with his thoughts.
Unlike others, I don't believe you are of the "Anti-Christ" spirit. Howerver, I do believe that your view on this matter is somewhat out of context. Considering that God the Father nor The Son fisically wrote these psalms, though initially truly inspired, we can and must accept that thousands of years of translation deviate the true message.
Andrew you are not a servant of God. You are of the Anti-Christ spirit. You have been given over to depravity and a reprobate mind because you refused to repent of secret sins and now you are a seething cauldron of condemnable corruption. Beware Children of God of the False prophets like Andrew that seek to deceive the very elect. Your message is not born of the Spirit of Christ it is born of the Anti-Christ. I pray you repent of your damnable heresy.
Lewis, who was a brilliant man in many ways, made the common 20th century mistake of misunderstanding the Psalms. The Psalms were intended to be sung- and were sung in Protestant Churches universally until mid 19th century. Had Lewis sung Psalm 109, he would realize that the Psalm is a warning to all about what happens when one curses
- that this attitude results in the disastrous consequences described: eg. 18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
Hopefully Christian Churches everywhere will do what many Reformed churches still do - and sing the Psalms as is commanded in the New Testament Colossians 3:16. That way they will gain better revelation and insight into the meaning of Scripture. BTW The Psalms are chiefly intended to allow a singing confession of faith, and to provide instruction and warning to all- not to hurt anyone.

Hi. Thanks for the comment. You wrote me, "Had Lewis sung Psalm 109, he would realize that the Psalm is a warning to all about what happens when one curses". Sorry, I'm unsure about where you're coming from. King David cursed people. Do you think that was OK? Thanks.
Exactly my point. You haven't sung the Psalms either. If you had, you would realize more clearly what I said- that Psalm 109 is a warning of the curse that follows a life of cursing. No need to be sorry- because you probably are a very intelligent and well informed Christian.
Yet we are supposed to sing the Psalms as a means of grace to teach us- and build our spirits in faith. Psalm 109 teaches us the dangers of cursing.
Hi. You wrote back, "Psalm 109 teaches us the dangers of cursing."
But isn't the Psalmist continually cursing other people to hell? He says...
"O Jehovah, do not I hate those hating You? And am I not detesting those rising against You?" (Psalm 139:21) "I hate them with a perfect hatred; they have become my enemies."(Psalm 139:22)
Sorry. What I'm asking is - Was it OK for David to hate other people? The Psalmist cursed and hated other people and described this in the Psalms. Now, if it's sinful for man to curse - as Psalm 109:18 says - are the Psalms the Word of God?
I'd say the Psalmist is Christ alone - the Judge of all things - judging the non-elect. But if you say the Psalmist is David, aren't the Psalms sinful?
Again no need to be sorry- but you are jumping around to other chapters like a Jehovah's witness. You must understand that the Psalms are very significant revelation. And the idea that we can trivially jump around in them is wrong.
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
Here is the quote at the end of 139. Hatred is described here as perfect hatred. This is perfect detachment.
This is no different than what Jesus commanded when he said that if we do not hate even our own household and family we are not fit for the kingdom. What this obviously means is that we must be completely detached from wicked thoughts- and refuse to join in hatred, but love all with the love of God which overcomes the world. That can also be called hatred, because we do not join the wicked in their foolish and malicious sin.
By the way- this reaction is that of the perfect man, so certainly it was that of Christ- and it should be of us also.- so I don't disagree that this was clearly the act of Christ. However, the Psalms were not only discursive discussion of Christ's nature but also instructive of Christians when properly understood.
Please accept my apology for criticizing the use of a few different chapter references. I have gained some insight from all this- and hope you have also. Psalm 22 can only be applied to Christ for instance- but of course we receive the benefits of His sacrifice.
If you listen to people who have studied, then you will know that. I give no comment about who was like this or who was like that. You must know that we are all sinners! EVEN YOU! Yes, and me... the preacher, the jailkeeper, the president of the united states... everyone! why water it down? the truth is just what it is...
For example, it seems too cruel for nonbelievers to read the Book of Exodus, Chronicles, and a lot of Old Testaments
because they think God allows any behavior of killing.(As you know, Israeli killed a lot of people who are against them. Of course, we know why and how it is righteous.)
They say God is not justice because of killing. In this way, non christians including atheists could say Ps 23:5 is not rational and stupid but rather barbarian.
I agree with Lewis ! Some of the psalms are an expression of evil, as are other parts of scripture. For example in Deut ( I cant find the exact quote now) it says that if a woman being raped does not scream she is guilty! But this is wrong. We have a 'fight flight and freeze' mechanism, we share with the animals when they are attacked ! The freez mechanism is involuntary, and would prevent a woman from screaming. She gets abused twice !
I think the part that you mean is Deut 22:23-27. I have no clue of freeze mechanism but fight or flight mechanism. I've searched the former but couldn't find it. But at least I can understand wht it means. I think, however, that she could've screamed b/c according to the part, it mentioned "in a town"
If the rape happened out in the country, only the man shall die. As Scripture says nobody would've been able to rescue her if it was done out in the country. Idk whether freeze mechanism exists, but ask myself "Is both the mechanisms right or does it exist?" " Should we believe it?" If they exist, one of 'em should be active in a situation. Actually, b/c I'm not a behaviorist, I don't like to say we couldn't help it. Human is not a machine nor is it the same as any animal.
Anyway, my point is that Lewis didn't mean the Bible is wicked, but wanted to answer questions that could be or could've been raised by unbelievers, so he pretended to be a nonchristian.(Raising questions as if we don't belive or doubt the Bible-kinda being in unbelievers' shoes-and then apologying them is one of the ways we can defend and strengthen our opinions)The Scriptures are perfect and good but it doesn't seem to be b/c we judge it by using our limited experience and knowledge.
I'd like to say that there are a lot of ways to claim one's opinion. And one of 'em , which I often use is to say an opposite opinion first as if it seems to be plausable. Then, we say what we really mean because in this way, we can make our opinion more certain and firm. Like that, I think the reason why Lewis used the words like "devilish, diabolical" is because he wanted to say what it really means. (I don't the English version of the book, but I can be sure those kinda words are used.)
Great video, brother. You point out quite eloquently how leaning on our own understanding makes the understanding of the scriptures impossible. However, when we allow the Holy Spirit to teach us through The Word, we can see Christ throughout, because He IS The Word. Amen!
Well, read 'Reflections on the Psalms' ch 1 (pg 20-23):
"Even more devilish (that Ps 109) in one verse is the, otherwise beautiful 137..." "This [Ps 23:5] may not be so diabolical as the passages I quoted above...One way of dealing with these terrible or (dare we say?) contemptible Psalms".
So he says the Bible is devilish, diabolical and contemptible. There's nothing misleading about the title.
While you are at it, why not say "a couple of Psalms" or "a couple of Pslams in the Bible" instead of the Bible? If I note that a federal magistrate in Southern Alabama is corrupt would you paraphrase me to say the whole U.S. government is corrupt? I don't think it is a fair portrayl of C.S. Lewis's writing, even in that one book, that the Bible is wicked. A couple of verses, he felt that way.
"why not say "a couple of Psalms" or "a couple of Pslams in the Bible" instead of the Bible?" I did think for a second maybe Andrew's being unfair on that point, but then the Bible stands or falls as a whole. He can't criticize the Psalms without casting all of the Bible in doubt. I agree with about 90% of what he writes, but he says incorrect things occasionally (google 'inclusivism' and 'c.s. lewis') that are dangerous.
perhaps but it got me to watch it. The video explains what lewis meant i think. "
So intentionally misleading titles to get you to watch something is okay? Why stop there, why not "C.S. Lewis implicated in JFK murder" or "C.S. Lewis was closet Satanist" then, if misleading titles are okay as long as they get you to watch the video.
well i merely meant that its not uncommon. Some people even try to evangellize by using tags that sound pornogrphic. I don't really think the title or the tags matter much so long as the content is right.
"I don't really think the title or the tags matter much so long as the content is right. "
Really? So you are okay with "C.S. Lewis implicated in JFK murder" or "C.S. Lewis was closet Satanist". And it would okay with you for theists to mention Dawkins or Hitchens and claim they are pedophiles or Nazis or convicted rapists? As long as it was only in the title or tag? That is a very weird line for you to draw. Misleading is okay here but not there.
It is a bit underhanded perhaps but It works for some folks. To me tags, the tile icon and titles are like the cover of a book. Its there to draw you in. Youcant really judge the content by it especially if the content doesnt really support the title. Now if the content of that vid was actually bout things as which you describe then we could discuss those issues on their merits (assuming that the director isnt a closed mided lunatic). Of course some fallouth is expected regardless.
It seems to me that you want to have your cake and eat it. I prefer Lewis's interpretation. It feels more loving and less desperate for dogma.

BUT, the LION that is the True Lamb, and not the fake Jesus (the "thing") worshipped by the Kings of the Earth, also has moments in which his most inner heart, his LION HEART, cries out upon this spiritual cross "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do".
myfanniejigglesaboot 2 months ago
most the Psalms are the HEART of the LAMB amidst the LIONS. these lions are ferocious and wicked.

He Is NOT ONLY love, but righteousness & Justice in GREAT measure & totality.
rangoon03 6 months ago
The psalms do not make any claim to be thoughts or commands of God. Some psalms have become known as the cursing psalms. They give us insight into human nature. Christ did not apply every psalm to himself. The great thing about the bible is that it doesn't sugar coat it's subjects. Psalmists, and prophets were fallible humans. So let's learn the right lesson from this psalm...even holy men are cab able of hatred and sin. That's why we need Christ.

everyone should do themselves a favor and never pay any attention to andrew bain at all. arguing with him encourages him, its the fuel to his fire, dissension is the reason his ministry exists.(romans 16:17) tells us to stay away from these type of people "such people are not serving the Lord but their own appetite.he has been doing this for a long time and he has been warned many times.he is not gonna repent for his ministry.may God help him.just pray for andrew theirs nothing more we can do
FollowTheCloud 8 months ago 2
@FollowTheCloud I would suggest you read the whole verse including the one you attempted to quote. Romans 16:17 says that those causing dissension are causing them "contrary to the teaching which you have learned". It is referring to what's actually being taught. Are these preachers teaching the truth or not?
Because according to your logic, Paul shouldn't be preaching against dissension, otherwise he would, himself, be causing dissension.
At least Alicenotinchains admits truth doesn't matter.

God bless.

he did not say the Bible is wicked, but yes these are things of Christ and not David himself. God corrects and rebukes out of love because He wants us to be right.
businesspartner1 1 year ago
Also, the Bible is not the Word of God. That would be Jesus. The Bible is just our road map, to help us on the way to meeting Jesus. It is inspired by God for this purpose, and, along with the Holy Spirit, is the best way of seeking God. It's also curious that this video maker is picking & choosing what to pay attention to from Lewis' words. Read the whole book, Reflection on the Pslams (where this stuff comes from) and you'll understand what Lewis was really saying — not this, for sure!
yokaimonogatari 1 year ago
Where did you ever get the idea that the Psalms were the words of Jesus? This idea has never been a part of Christian orthodoxy. The Psalms were mostly written by David. As the Bible clearly shows, David was a very flawed individual. What does it prove to say that David, a Biblical character, sinned? Look at every Biblical character: all save Jesus sinned! That's kind of the point of the Bible.

Strefanash 1 year ago
Lewis never said the Bible was wicked. But did his thought imply such?
To be honest, Lewis is good as an apologist, but regards christian living he did not knon what he was talkingabout. He said in Mere Christianity "SHOVE THEM BACK" ie unbelieving thouights, and also "LETS PRETEND" thinking that pretending to love will produce love.
both of these are will of the flesh, legalism and hypocrisy
Strefanash 1 year ago
if these are david's rage "are the Psalms the word of God" Mr Bain asks?
The Bible is the words of many persons, God, Kings, demons, atheists ("the fool said there is no God") pagans. But these psalms are included in scripture as part of God's overall communicative purpose - not to endorse the evil but for a reason i have suggested. I am not saying this is all psalms, some are prophecy, PS 22.
so YES they are part of the Word of God even when God did not say these things
Strefanash 1 year ago
Mr Bains resonse fails. This psalm cannot be the prayer of Jesus, and why? the psalm WANTS the evil man to be damned, or Babylonians babies to be smashed on rocks. to make this the prayer of Christ is to make christ as hateful as the psalmist. But what does scripture say about God in this matter? he is not willing that ANY perish.
resentment is sin, yes, and if you ARE resentful? are you damned? or will God hear you if you cry to him for mercy
Strefanash 1 year ago
a THIRD position: a warts and all record of the emotions man can have, to encourage us that we CAN confess these to God and be forgiven for them. Lewis AND this speaker are IMO wrong
Strefanash 1 year ago
Yes, cursing is wrong. NOW, given that we do curse them in our hearts, are we to pretend to the contrary?
IF so WHY are the psalms in the word of God? to show that we can and MUST be honest to God, and He will hear us if we cry to Him mercy. it is a chronicle of the experience of man, including self righteous viciousness
I reject completely the notion that this psalm is the prayer of Christ
Strefanash 1 year ago
You seem to like to twist the Bible and what other's have to say. Why would you want criticize? I think you should be encouraging people to come to Christ and stop wasting your time and breath on trying to bring others down.

I dont know much about Andrewcbains but this seems like Arm Chair Theologians hour..Beginners Night. The title is decietful..it makes you think you will hear Lewis, not a commentary by a little person preteding to critque him.. Thirdly he did not say these Psalms were not part of the Bible...he recognized them as part of the Sacred Word.

sleepytimetearules 2 years ago 4
This illustrates the so-often personal wranglings of interpretation-the Bible is a patch-work of different writings from equally different periods of time, and from individuals all claiming divine inspiration-we have the Judaic old testaments, and the apostolic new testaments-the messages are inconsistent, and variable; Lewis really is unwittingly recognising that variability of message-and, rightly ,questioning the morality of hatred-it is all Mythology.

@pharmfarm59538 ...Yeah....Paul spoke of "workers of iniquity" that were already scheming to dismantle Christianity. After the crucifiction there were a great deal of folks that hated this Messiahs teaching...they are still with us.

Psalms like 109 are called "Curse Psalms" which were written in the time of the Jews' exile to Babylon. They show the ultimate anguish and despair of a people who saw their future in shreds.
Imagineyour country, dear reader, invaded and taken over, seemingly never to be seen again, and you are carried off to a distant country, with no hope of return.

...I think CS Lewis was mixed up in theosopy and the occult...same thing with JR Tolkien. He did on occasion say some profound words...he also said some very kooky things as well. Was he a good man?...I don't know. I do know his work is popular with occultists and the cannabis set. I'll have to dismiss the guy as irrelevant to sound Christian doctrine....and let God be his judge.

His involvement in the occult is exaggerated; twas his friend Williams who involved himself to such an extent.

@vachief You already did judge him...and falsely. Few were more commited to defence of the gospel.
pharmfarm59538 1 year ago
@pharmfarm59538 ..I think he was mixed -up in the occult. He and his buddy Tolkien were admirers of Blavatsky and her secret doctrine. The Cronicles of Narnia is not a Christian book and was a prelude introduction aimed at unsuspecting parents to read to thier children. He was a clever fellow....I'll give you that.
vachief 1 year ago
I have read over the majority of his the books he wrote. I dont know where the occult acusation comes from. He stood in the mainstream of Christian orthodoxy and defended the historic doctrines of Christianity.
pharmfarm59538 1 year ago
@pharmfarm59538 ...In his books.."Beyond Personality" (1945) and ...."Mere Christianity" (1952).....He states that the God of the bible will turn us into "gods and goddesses". The bible does not say that nor even imply that. That is Luciferian doctrine....not Christian doctrine.
vachief 1 year ago
And if we were having a book reading we could discuss what he meant by that.....again he stood within the mainstream of orthodox Christianity. In fact he spent his life after his conversion defending it. Before your comments I have never heard the absurd accusation that he was involved in the occult.
pharmfarm59538 1 year ago
@pharmfarm59538 ....Do a little background checking on Mr. Lewis, it is fairly common knowledge concerning his affinity with the occult. If you want to know what a person thinks....read what they write. It is quite obvious what Lewis believed. I guess if by "mainstream orthodox Christianity"....you mean, those that have never read the bible...than I suppose you may have something. lol
vachief 1 year ago
What does "fairly common knowledge concerning his affinity with the occult mean? I have read almost all of the books he wrote and own over half of them. I saw no connection to the occult in his books. He did write a lot of allegory and fantasy. " The mainstrem of Christian Orthodoxy" means that you believe what historic Biblical Christians have always believed....and no it doesnt mean you never read the Bible....Where did you get that bizzare and crazy idea?...
pharmfarm59538 1 year ago

MadameHypnosesSlave 3 years ago
Unlike others, I don't believe you are of the "Anti-Christ" spirit. Howerver, I do believe that your view on this matter is somewhat out of context. Considering that God the Father nor The Son fisically wrote these psalms, though initially truly inspired, we can and must accept that thousands of years of translation deviate the true message.
MadameHypnosesSlave 3 years ago
Andrew you are not a servant of God. You are of the Anti-Christ spirit. You have been given over to depravity and a reprobate mind because you refused to repent of secret sins and now you are a seething cauldron of condemnable corruption. Beware Children of God of the False prophets like Andrew that seek to deceive the very elect. Your message is not born of the Spirit of Christ it is born of the Anti-Christ. I pray you repent of your damnable heresy.

There is good hate and bad hate, good love and bad love etc etc. Grow up. If he criticised the Bible, then Lewis is wrong, not the Bible.

Lewis, who was a brilliant man in many ways, made the common 20th century mistake of misunderstanding the Psalms. The Psalms were intended to be sung- and were sung in Protestant Churches universally until mid 19th century. Had Lewis sung Psalm 109, he would realize that the Psalm is a warning to all about what happens when one curses
beast543210 4 years ago
- that this attitude results in the disastrous consequences described: eg. 18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.
beast543210 4 years ago

Thanks.
AndrewcBain 4 years ago
Exactly my point. You haven't sung the Psalms either. If you had, you would realize more clearly what I said- that Psalm 109 is a warning of the curse that follows a life of cursing. No need to be sorry- because you probably are a very intelligent and well informed Christian.
Yet we are supposed to sing the Psalms as a means of grace to teach us- and build our spirits in faith. Psalm 109 teaches us the dangers of cursing.
beast543210 4 years ago
AndrewcBain 4 years ago
AndrewcBain 4 years ago
Again no need to be sorry- but you are jumping around to other chapters like a Jehovah's witness. You must understand that the Psalms are very significant revelation. And the idea that we can trivially jump around in them is wrong.
beast543210 4 years ago 2
21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
Here is the quote at the end of 139. Hatred is described here as perfect hatred. This is perfect detachment.
beast543210 4 years ago 2
This is no different than what Jesus commanded when he said that if we do not hate even our own household and family we are not fit for the kingdom. What this obviously means is that we must be completely detached from wicked thoughts- and refuse to join in hatred, but love all with the love of God which overcomes the world. That can also be called hatred, because we do not join the wicked in their foolish and malicious sin.
beast543210 4 years ago
By the way- this reaction is that of the perfect man, so certainly it was that of Christ- and it should be of us also.- so I don't disagree that this was clearly the act of Christ. However, the Psalms were not only discursive discussion of Christ's nature but also instructive of Christians when properly understood.
beast543210 4 years ago
Please accept my apology for criticizing the use of a few different chapter references. I have gained some insight from all this- and hope you have also. Psalm 22 can only be applied to Christ for instance- but of course we receive the benefits of His sacrifice.
beast543210 4 years ago
The Prophet hates sin. Sin is what he wishes to rid himself of. Those who he wishes to dash against the rock: the daughters of Babylon.

The bible is about the truth of what was...

In this way, non christians including atheists could say Ps 23:5 is not rational and stupid but rather barbarian.
episode0414 4 years ago
The bottomline is that we sometimes claim our opinions directly but there is another logical way to do so which we can refute the rebuttal as well.
episode0414 4 years ago
I agree with Lewis ! Some of the psalms are an expression of evil, as are other parts of scripture. For example in Deut ( I cant find the exact quote now) it says that if a woman being raped does not scream she is guilty! But this is wrong. We have a 'fight flight and freeze' mechanism, we share with the animals when they are attacked ! The freez mechanism is involuntary, and would prevent a woman from screaming. She gets abused twice !
ironjohnlad 4 years ago
I think the part that you mean is Deut 22:23-27. I have no clue of freeze mechanism but fight or flight mechanism. I've searched the former but couldn't find it. But at least I can understand wht it means. I think, however, that she could've screamed b/c according to the part, it mentioned "in a town"
episode0414 4 years ago
If the rape happened out in the country, only the man shall die. As Scripture says nobody would've been able to rescue her if it was done out in the country. Idk whether freeze mechanism exists, but ask myself "Is both the mechanisms right or does it exist?" " Should we believe it?" If they exist, one of 'em should be active in a situation. Actually, b/c I'm not a behaviorist, I don't like to say we couldn't help it. Human is not a machine nor is it the same as any animal.
episode0414 4 years ago
Anyway, my point is that Lewis didn't mean the Bible is wicked, but wanted to answer questions that could be or could've been raised by unbelievers, so he pretended to be a nonchristian.(Raising questions as if we don't belive or doubt the Bible-kinda being in unbelievers' shoes-and then apologying them is one of the ways we can defend and strengthen our opinions)The Scriptures are perfect and good but it doesn't seem to be b/c we judge it by using our limited experience and knowledge.
episode0414 4 years ago
After that, he mentioned allegory in order to solve our curiosity of the questions that he raised before.
(Some non-Christians would argue that the verses in Ps 23 are cruel.
So Lewis put the words like devlish, contemptible on behalf of them and in their shoes.)
We sometimes should not judge a phrase or clause as it is, since it may contain some sorda rhetorical meanings.
Understand logic.
episode0414 4 years ago
I'd like to say that there are a lot of ways to claim one's opinion. And one of 'em , which I often use is to say an opposite opinion first as if it seems to be plausable. Then, we say what we really mean because in this way, we can make our opinion more certain and firm. Like that, I think the reason why Lewis used the words like "devilish, diabolical" is because he wanted to say what it really means. (I don't the English version of the book, but I can be sure those kinda words are used.)
episode0414 4 years ago
No,he did not say that the bible is devilish, diabolical and contemptible, but that a few of the Psalms are--at least in his understanding.

Great video, brother. You point out quite eloquently how leaning on our own understanding makes the understanding of the scriptures impossible. However, when we allow the Holy Spirit to teach us through The Word, we can see Christ throughout, because He IS The Word. Amen!

Your title is misleading. He never said that.
Matur1n 4 years ago
Well, read 'Reflections on the Psalms' ch 1 (pg 20-23):
"Even more devilish (that Ps 109) in one verse is the, otherwise beautiful 137..." "This [Ps 23:5] may not be so diabolical as the passages I quoted above...One way of dealing with these terrible or (dare we say?) contemptible Psalms".
So he says the Bible is devilish, diabolical and contemptible. There's nothing misleading about the title.
SmurfBreath 4 years ago
I don't see the word "wicked" there. Why not use the actual word he said instead of paraphrasing?
Matur1n 4 years ago
While you are at it, why not say "a couple of Psalms" or "a couple of Pslams in the Bible" instead of the Bible? If I note that a federal magistrate in Southern Alabama is corrupt would you paraphrase me to say the whole U.S. government is corrupt? I don't think it is a fair portrayl of C.S. Lewis's writing, even in that one book, that the Bible is wicked. A couple of verses, he felt that way.
Matur1n 4 years ago

Matur1n 4 years ago
well i merely meant that its not uncommon. Some people even try to evangellize by using tags that sound pornogrphic. I don't really think the title or the tags matter much so long as the content is right.
joness105639 4 years ago
"I don't really think the title or the tags matter much so long as the content is right. "
Really? So you are okay with "C.S. Lewis implicated in JFK murder" or "C.S. Lewis was closet Satanist". And it would okay with you for theists to mention Dawkins or Hitchens and claim they are pedophiles or Nazis or convicted rapists? As long as it was only in the title or tag? That is a very weird line for you to draw. Misleading is okay here but not there.
Matur1n 4 years ago
It is a bit underhanded perhaps but It works for some folks. To me tags, the tile icon and titles are like the cover of a book. Its there to draw you in. Youcant really judge the content by it especially if the content doesnt really support the title. Now if the content of that vid was actually bout things as which you describe then we could discuss those issues on their merits (assuming that the director isnt a closed mided lunatic). Of course some fallouth is expected regardless.
