@TWBicycles They rode fixed in the first TDF races. When going up mountains you can flip the wheel for a lower gear. It's not dumb, it's just the most simple solution. The simplicity of the drivetrain and the straight chainline also means that more power will go into driving the bike forward instead of pulling extra sprockets and a skewed chainline causing extra friction in the drivetrain.

Is like me riding across the country with a bmx bike. Unless they take a southern route, they're likely to die descending a mountain, since they're too cool for brakes, or die of dehydration/malnourishment. I ride a Dawes fixie, a Salsa Fargo, and am building a Bridgestone mb-4 for commuting, and the choice cross country would be obvious(Fargo, hard to beat 5 water bottle cages plus rack mounts..although the Bridgestone will be running bar ends, so less to break).
