Try covering the nest so it's dark, and make sure the nest is damp, then shine a light bulb onto the tubes. There's a small risk of cooking them if the light it too close, but if it's just bright the ants will move out of the tubes and into the nest. If the rooms and/or tunnels of your nest are too roomy or spacious they also won't move in. Some species of ants like it really tight.
That's what Budzi08 was asking/saying earlier. The queen is definitely essential. Well, if it's a polygyn species like Myrmica rubra that has many queens in the nest chances are you will eventually collect at least one if you keep going back to collect.
My one collection from the Myrmica rubra colony I have contained over ten queens. If it's not a species with multiple queens in the colony, i.e. monogyn, you may be out of luck if you can't collect the entire colony and rummage through the entire nest. Good luck!
thnx again. idk exactly what the technical name for the ants im collecting is called but they are just those small black worker ants. are they good to create a colony out of?

Probably a Lasius or Formica species. Yeah, they're great but only if you have a queen.

they are moving around and look just fine but r staying in the tubes. how can i get them to move into the nest? thnx
