I just recently started listening to death metal, and Atheist happened to be one of the bands I stumbled upon. Amazing music, definitely going to start listing to them.
This album was released in 1989. It was way ahead of its time. THe break downs alone were something not many were doing back then. Music was better through the 80's and 90's. The stuff today is over produced digital crap. At least back then we didnt have click tracks and triggers although were around were not used except for studio recordings. Live shows were mic'd nothing more. Sucks Roger had to pass. Was a great band. We need something new and fresh.

I' ve recently found Atheist and I' ve enjoyed every second of their first two albums (I hope I' ll buy them soon), the thrashing progressive guitar work added to Flynn's rampaging clever drumming (which entered to my favorites list) just blow me away.
But Can somebody tell me why is this considered DEATH METAL and Kreator' s Pleasure to Kill, for example, Thrash? Just because of the scene it emerged of and the year?
@darkdrageon Yeah, I know they are different and that's why I ask, I consider Mile's vocals and riffs more brutal/ heavier than the ones in this too albums, never the less they are credited as Death Metal over Pleasure to Kill which is considered just an influential album to DM. I think it's pretty much only because of the year and scene they were at the moment of release, I can't think of any other reason, I prefer Atheist, but think Kreator was heavier.
Death Metal is a more complex, fast, distorted and violent, evolution of thrash metal in which their musicians tend to implement "dirty" growl vocals and shrieks instead of the semi clean vocals. This is an example of technical death/thrash, which means that this band is sacrificing heaviness in exchange to some musical complexity, without loosing the typical "I'm bad" thrash structure, but maintaining the Death metal dissonance that makes you fell like a murderer

@HarvesterofSorrow316 It mainly has to do with vocals and lyrics, thrash is usually has higher pitched and more clean vocals, while death has growling unclear vocals. other than those key differences i cant explain it much further other than that i find thrash faster than death so speed is a factor aswell
lol you make me repeat myself, this is technical Death/thrash so it has death riffs, bass growls, shrieks, thrash riffs, jazzy changes, and stuff, this means it is less heavy that standard death metal, kreator's pleasure to kill has standard thrash riffs, 4/4 signatures and semiclean voice. I dont think its heavier than it, but ok, it doesn't have any characteristic that death metal owns. is more than simple "heaviness"
vocals in pleasure to kill are semiclean, gutturals are ocassional and different to death metal ones, atheist's gutturals are frecuent, low and not semiclean in any sense , kreator's tremolo bass riffs in PTK are faster than tremolo leads in this song, but thats the point, thrash use tremolo to "bass" the song, and death to lead it with higher notes. In summary, this is like 40% Death Metal, 30% thrash, 15 jazz, 15 prog & kreator PTK is 98% thrash and 2% growls.

I let her borrow my headphones, and said it was screamo and took no talent, and also said it was barely music. Then she told me later she was going to a pop concert later that night. I' ve recently found Atheist and I' ve enjoyed every second of their first two albums (I hope I' ll buy them soon), the thrashing progressive guitar work added to Flynn's rampaging clever drumming (which entered to my favorites list) just blow me away.
But Can somebody tell me why is this considered DEATH METAL and Kreator' s Pleasure to Kill, for example, Thrash? Just because of the scene it emerged of and the year?

@darkdrageon Yeah, I know they are different and that's why I ask, I consider Mile's vocals and riffs more brutal/ heavier than the ones in this too albums, never the less they are credited as Death Metal over Pleasure to Kill which is considered just an influential album to DM. I think it's pretty much only because of the year and scene they were at the moment of release, I can't think of any other reason, I prefer Atheist, but think Kreator was heavier.

Death Metal is a more complex, fast, distorted and violent, evolution of thrash metal in which their musicians tend to implement "dirty" growl vocals and shrieks instead of the semi clean vocals. This is an example of technical death/thrash, which means that this band is sacrificing heaviness in exchange to some musical complexity, without loosing the typical "I'm bad" thrash structure, but maintaining the Death metal dissonance that makes you fell like a murderer

I think it's because of the proggresion metal had by the time of its release and its scene.

@HarvesterofSorrow316 It mainly has to do with vocals and lyrics, thrash is usually has higher pitched and more clean vocals, while death has growling unclear vocals. other than those key differences i cant explain it much further other than that i find thrash faster than death so speed is a factor aswell

lol you make me repeat myself, this is technical Death/thrash so it has death riffs, bass growls, shrieks, thrash riffs, jazzy changes, and stuff, this means it is less heavy that standard death metal, kreator's pleasure to kill has standard thrash riffs, 4/4 signatures and semiclean voice. I dont think its heavier than it, but ok, it doesn't have any characteristic that death metal owns. is more than simple "heaviness"

vocals in pleasure to kill are semiclean, gutturals are ocassional and different to death metal ones, atheist's gutturals are frecuent, low and not semiclean in any sense , kreator's tremolo bass riffs in PTK are faster than tremolo leads in this song, but thats the point, thrash use tremolo to "bass" the song, and death to lead it with higher notes. In summary, this is like 40% Death Metal, 30% thrash, 15 jazz, 15 prog & kreator PTK is 98% thrash and 2% growls.

It made me mad, the other day I was minding my own business the other day in class listening to this song and looking for other good jazz and metal songs online, when one of my friends asked what I was listening to. I let her borrow my headphones, and said it was screamo and took no talent, and also said it was barely music. Then she told me later she was going to a pop concert later that night. Most american teens have the worst taste in music.

I seriously have over 400 bands yet i dont many people about them. I usually wear a band shirt, and if one of my friends asks about i tell them its a metal band. I once wore a Devourment shirt with a bunch of dead ladies wraped around some huge dude like clothing, that got a girls attention, lol.
