Well, it's pretty hard to argue with "The Nose", but I got to say: Imagine you are tasting a Whisky with four friends and you swirle around whisky in every glas and then throw it out. and this you do the next day with new glasses. then you have spilled a lot of whisky on the ground and surely wasted money.
We don't get free whisky o a daily base, richard, and not all have the money to this expand. For me, it works very well with fressh and clean water, so I don't have to share with my cat.
@keesurt a little bit of water will allow the softer flavors to arise, to give it a fuller flavor, its not always needed, for mild whiskys for example. In the case of a high proof however you add a little water to it, it will lower the proof, and allow these subtle notes to pass through.
if we add a cube of ice instead of water, is it going to give us same effect?
when do we usually add ice to whiskey? what is the perfect temperature of whisky? how and where whiskey must be stored? sorry for asking so much questions, but I really need the experience of an expert like you!
My buddies and I follow his technique, and with good reason this man come from 3 generations of Master Blenders. Everything he says is the gospel truth as far as Scotch is concerned. Especially using the type of glass he is using. For a long time my buddies and I used sangria glasses cause of the similar shape they have to the one he uses, but once we found the correct glass we can not go back to anything but this.
This guy is nuts. Throws away Whiskey and then adds a cup of water to the second glass. Swirls it violently, and in the process spills some more! Maniac!
You hold the whisky away from your hand when nosing to avoid influence from your hand. But then you hold your finger into the water. Doesn't that influence the taste just as much?
Thank you for the instructions. In your opinion what is the whiskey you like best if you had to chose from Ballantines, J&B, Jim Beam and Jack Daniels? You said to mix something like 35% of water with it, doesn't that change the drinking experience by making the whiskey less strong?
I love this little guide, it mixes humor and expertise in a great way.
It also makes me want to discover the secret joys of whisky - currently my tongue and tastebuds still go a little haywire and i'm not so good at picking out the individual flavours but i'm determined not to be put off.
Hello Richard, Like your videos. I have one question. I use a glencarin glass for my whiskey, and a lot of experts say that the glencarin is the best glass for Scotch. One of the experts was ralfy.com, who suggested that people should use that glass for both blended and single malt whiskey. What is your opinion. Thanks W.T.
Hello, one question.. how do you identify the aromas of dark chocolat, vaunilla, dark fruits, etc? I´m trying to do it but i feel dificulty to do it! Can you show me some tips? and another question... I love Glenmorangie whiskys (quinta ruban). What Whyte and Mackay whisky you recommend?
I have now come home. After years of drinking all sorts of things, just because they were free behind the bar where I work at night, I have now been reborn into the world of Scottish Whisky. As a full blooded Scotsman I am so impressed by this man and what he is doing for the industry. I live in Sydney now but want to badly get involved with this industry, with this company and with this charismatic spokesman. If there is anything I can do, please get in touch.
I'll be damn if that aint the romeo y julieta short churchill tubos next to the computer? =D A nice whisky, but even nicer cigar =)) Thank you for your videos, you really open a new world of spirits for me =)
@Nashtak Because I love the taste! That's it! Hold it a second for every year, swirl it around, but I still get excited by my whiskies. Each one is like a first kiss!
He'll kill ME? My wife'll kill HIM if she sees him even suggesting I throw booze on her floors! His nosing technique reminds me of how dogs get acquainted.

There is different ways to drink whisky.
water can be added to adjust the taste.
Ice can be added to chill.
Or drink straight for full flavor.
If you add ice then you must add a very small amount of whisky or you will just be drink ice flavor and that is not nice.
