@elvinbrent Sorry Sunset Sam was actually played by Stephen Cepello Who was in fact a wrestler as well, He was Jessie Ventura's tag team partner. If you look up the full cast and crew of Elephant Parts you will find his name there as Steve Strong his pro westling name.
Wait a minute, this is Michael Nesmith, from the Monkees......wow this is..... but don't get my wrong he sings so well and this is a very good song, i'm just so surprised!
HEY I had the laser disc too but it was only later that I realized that skits were omitted on the lazer disc so that it wouldn't go over 60 minutes to be in CAV format. Laser discs kinda sucked that way.

mike nesmith was a genius, but his songs about the gay wrestler are his way of saying how badly he wanted to do the other 3 monkeees(esp.peterhead tork!
peter tork was a great musician, davy was a good singer he wasnt as good at instuments, and mickey was an actor but he was also a good singer. ALL VERY TALENTED!!
Too bad MTV couldn't stay as groovy as it used to be when it first got started. Now it's worse than a glamour magazine with nothing but ads and minimal art. It would be awesome if someone found some Pop Clips to post on here. Thanks for the info!
I love this song!! It has been in my head for about 25 years. I am glad I could find the video - thank you for posting it! I especially like when Sam comes walking up. Lucy and Ramona are good skaters too. I think the actress playing Ramona has done some more recent acting - she looks very familiar. Oh, and Mike was always my favorite Monkee too!!
hey janet....this is music....and it is a work of art..music is art..Micheal Nesmith was trying to seperate himself from the Monkee stereotype. He proved himself as a great song writer and performer. He was tired of the bubblegum/Hollywood fame.He wanted identity..As Micheal Nesmith..Did you know he wanted no part of the Monkee reunion tour in the mid 80s? This is a great song.....
I used to love this song when I was a kid! I remember the first time I saw this video on a show called Pop clips...before Mtv came along and ruined everything. Thanks for posting this! I wonder if it's on DVD? One of my favs...
More importantly, Nesmith created a video clip for "Rio" which, in a roundabout way, helped spur Nesmith's creation of a television program called Pop Clips for the Nickelodeon cable network. The concept was sold to Time Warner/Amex, who developed it into the MTV network. His single "Cruisin'" was the first video of the MTV generation.
He pretty much invented MTV. Rememer that the Monkess are credited (some say) as having the first music videos.
the producers were so damn jealous of him that they were petrified in being scared stiff but, his songs did notably make it on the albums because it was Micky who said that they weren't going to record anything as an A side unless a song of Michael's was on the B-Michael showed them up big time and even still today that's still true but, in an interview it was Gene Ashman who said that Michael's material was the best that he had ever heard because of him doing it in style and class
the message in the song is the fact that to live life in comfort and in harmony with other people, don't succumb to the ways of the material world-it's like you like someone like Lucy and Ramona did Sam but, don't trust them with your entire life unless you really know them and you have to find common ground with them so you can celebrate your bond with them the way he celebrated theirs
this was one the first videos I had ever seen on MTV in early days. Set design was simple back then. Black garbage bag background, fan and some lights. Thanks for the post.
Sam (Steve Strong) used to tag with Jesse the body, couldnt quite pull off the Superstar Graham thing. I understand he is a very accomplished artist now. COOL
I saw this video in 1987 the way that I love Mike's work and the whimiscal reality because this is how we are. Sam was very flamboyant and one of the MPs wasn't because I've seen Stephen in pictures and on TV performing like how he was one of the many who made it for the Monkees audition like how Charles Manson didn't.
Sam wasn't geigh, just a tad flamboyant. Initially everyone thought that was Hulk Hogan as Speedo Sam. But it's not. By the way, THANK you for this astounding song and video.
i love his little freak out at the end! :D i love Mike Nesmith!

I take it I wouldn't be designated a homophobe if I were to say that this is among the gayest things I've ever seen in my life?
Wonderful.

As far as we know, Michael Nesmith was neither gay nor ever a monkey.

I totally love this song and video. Michael did an awesome. I think there is a message there.
davyluver23 5 years ago
the message in the song is the fact that to live life in comfort and in harmony with other people, don't succumb to the ways of the material world-it's like you like someone like Lucy and Ramona did Sam but, don't trust them with your entire life unless you really know them and you have to find common ground with them so you can celebrate your bond with them the way he celebrated theirs
Summergirl2010 5 years ago
That's probably over-analysing it. I think the message was simply: you can find friends with a common bond.

I love "Elephant Parts". This song is very different compared to the monkee Nez we know & love. But for some reason I like it.
Also everytime I watch it I think there is some message to it I'm not quite picking up. Is there?
