It was fun to work on too. Some of the episodes had black and white stock footage war scenes with no sound and I had to create all the sounds effects. I also did some sound effects for a few computer generated animations with dinosaurs and other interesting stuff.
These days, I do mostly radio commercials and post-production for web videos. Not as much fun but it pays the bills. ;-)
Mostly, I take them from pre-recorded sound effects libraries and then edit them and process them to get the sounds I want. Sometimes, I record the sounds myself if I need to. If I wanted to make a sound for a dinosaur, I might take a couple of recorded animal sounds and process them and combine them to make a new sound. I might put up samples of the scenes I worked on if I can find the DVDs.
An example would be when the sword cuts through the rock near the end of this video. I took the sound of a circular saw going through a sheet of plywood and something else I forget, and I processed them and got that schwing sound that you hear.
wow! your work has been aired on the discovery channel :D that must be a hell of an experience to see (or hear) your work on the telly.. good going!
