The incomparable Great late Hank Williams, He was one of a kind, There'll never be another like him. (Perhaps Hank Williams the Third will give it a shot.) Thanks , Hank, for the sweet memories. John Ricker USA
Iord GOD im so thankfull you shared hank with us even though it was for a short time he has left us a life time of tresures we can enjoy for the rest of our life time thanks Alan for sharing
No one can sing a song so well and so soulful as Hank can.
His voice is unforgettable and I could listen to him sing all day.
He never recorded a song I didn't like. This old song has been one of my favorites for many years. There will never be another Hank Williams - God threw away the pattern when he made Hank. Thank you for posting this treasure. - Paula
to fishboy13 - I only know of this version which is on " The Unforgetable Hank Williams " 33 LP Album. It is available on ebay quite often. I don't know of any new CD's that have it. ..good luck :)
"I bought two tapes of Hanks for two English Pounds, Just ($8-00)... with all his Hits. In 1998.. Yet you think you have commercial-rights. You poor idiots!
This was the era of the lousy "Hank Overdubs" w/ lush strings. Luckily they didn't butcher this song (It actually sounds nice w/ the pedal steel behind it). I like the original (of course) but the bends of the pedal steel just compliments the bends of hangs singing. Hank was one of a kind...
This was an overdud but that is Don Helms on his Gibson Console Grande without pedals. Don did a great job on this and the overdub kept with the Hank Williams style.
Wow, it sounds like he's using pedals.. I'm surprised! I know he did get into pedals for a while (sometime around the time he started backing Patsy Cline). Thanks for the info :) There's a clip on here, where he's backing a modern country singer in the studio (recorded in 2007?). He's using the same console that he used when he backed Hank.
Don actually backed Patsy with the old Console Grande too. The sound is more full because the recording studio had better acoustics than the old Tulane Hotel that Hank had to record in. Don also started using an amp with better reverb. He went to the pedal steel around 1959 and that's what you saw on the Wilburn Brothers shows and others in the 60s.
Just wanted to let every one know that Hank didn't write this song. A lady by the name of Miss Vergie wrote it and Hank recorded it. She's 90 years old and lives here in Maryland. I'll be seeing her Friday night at a local bluegrass gathering. Our friends bluegrass band learned the song so they're bringing her there and surprising her with the song. I hope they make Hank and Miss Vergie proud. I'm sure they will.....Hanks the best
Don't overlook the contribution to Hank's sound made by the steel guitar playing of Don Helms....unique amongst steel players of the time, but somehow so perfectly suited for Hank.
I had the honor of hearing Don play and meeting him several times...what a treasure.
@ribrass Im 60 now, grew up in the 60s. I have always said...It aint country music if it aint got a fiddle or a steel. Todays country is NOT country music. My Daddy played this music all the time and taufgt me to dance to it. I miss Him.
He had a penetrating psychological gaze, far deeper than most trained psychologists today, it is really quite amazing that such a simple boy can say in a few words what it is that makes and breaks relationships, based on different spiritual outlooks - the righteous are hated by the wicked, etc., it's the wisdom of Solomon almost!! Can anybody recommend some more grade A Hank Williams stuff?? I'm all ears.
Hank Williams in my opinion is underrated songwriting wise, I have yet to see anyone top is songwriting skills. Simple yet genius. 'Ramblin Man' is one of his darker songs, but one of my favs. 'I saw the light' also another great (even if you are non-religious) and 'howlin at the moon' again proves his songwriting ability. These are just a few of the many greats.
Hank is wonderful as always with this old song. I don't think anyone else can have that soulful sound Hank has with his singing. I've been a fan of his all my life. Fred Rose was a fabulous song writer and Hank was always the one to do them the most justice I feel. Thank you for posting. - Paula
What are the most important Hank Williams recordings in your opinion? There was a show on him on tv tonight and I'd like to learn more, this song is certainly great.
I do believe this song and "Mansion on the Hill", "Lovesick Blues" and "Cold Cold Heart" are the greatest of Hank's recordings. My aunt saw Hank and Audrey and the band on stage at the Opry back in 1949 and she said before the curtains even opened (back then they had them) the strains of "Lovesick Blues" brought the audience to a stand.. "Mansion on the Hill" is probably a lot like Hank's personal feelings along with "Cold Cold Heart". He always wanted a home, love, and simple things.-Paula
wow i've never heard this...i have the "hank alone with his guitar" demo...but this is awesome..i can see how purist would'nt want hanks music tampered w/ ,but this was smooth ..kinda like adding coke to tennesee whiskey
Boy, this brings back memories. I got the album the lonesome sound of Hank Williams long ago and remember playing it when I was 13. Some of Hanks overdubbed works are not as so bastardized as some try to make them out to be. Hank playing this as a demo alone is very good, but there is a place for the overdubbed one. This one is remarkable. Thanks for putting it out there. You can't find it anywhere, unless you have the original.
how true, i've posted a few others off of some of the albums because of that. many might not even heard them before. they are kind of old. all the real ones were done before stereo. none of them were ever hits, but i think they are good songs :)
@QuibloGamingStudios they can still make cds just because he isn't alive anymore. they did the same thing with Keith Whitley. its usually greatest hits cds they do it with or recordins they found after he died or stuff he recorded before he died
Fantastic can;t stop playing it ! I'm a musician myself and learning this one to add to my repertoire? Thanks Alan. Hope to be downloading some of my own songs and videos soon on u tube . . watch this space . .
