i saw this guy play live in putaruru, NZ on the weekend. it was amazing. as a young pianist, i found it both inspiring and somewhat daunting. john chen is a true master of the piano
Just wondering, is anyone else worried about YouTube? I heard several months ago that viruses might start showing up on YouTube. I didn't believe it until just now when I tried watching Maurizio Pollini's recording of this piece, and my anti-virus software stopped me before something bad happened. I love YouTube, but not enough to have viruses on my computer, and you guys might be smart to inform people to use YouTube AT THEIR OWN RISK.
Superb! John, your performence is the best one I have ever heard. I have heard numerous playing of this etude, but yours is better than Pollini, Ashkenazy, Cziffra, Argerich, etc.
Your interpretation, expression, and so stable technique are incredible. Please, keep posting! Excellent! You will be one of the best in the world!
Just for anyone who is interested in hearing the most incredible recording EVER!!! made of this etude, google "abc classic fm- SIPCA" and click on Ran Dank- there's audio of him playing this etude, and it is the most incredible rendition I have ever heard.
Yes, John Chen won SIPCA in 2004 but Ran Dank came third in 2008- Konstantin Shamray came first. I know it's not easy!- I attended some of the rounds of the competition, one of Ran Dank's concerts, as well as one given by Shamray! I was, clearly, blown away. I felt so lucky!- I am hoping that such pianism is contagious!
really quiet impressive, but the best? i don`t know? Ran plays it with less sostenuto pedal then most others, that gives it a clear tone. But it sounds a little bit strange to me. the Tempo ist quite the same as most recordings (aroundt 170).
I thought that Ran Dank's etude was quite amazingly even. It did lapse around bars 31-32, but that was fairly slight!
The sostenuto pedal was rendered unnecessary in R.D's case due to his technique making it very even- that really does show how capable a pianist he is.
Is the tempo all that disturbs you? R.D's tempo really is more like 176, which is the original mm.
I couldn't stop saying to myself, "this guy is good. this guy is really goood!!!!" this performance is more polished than ashkenezy's. what a delightful surprise on youtube
I love this Etude by Chopin, and I just love the way Chen plays it. It is a magnificent work of piano music, and It's hard to believe that this piece was actually intended to be a warm up piece, and nothing more, which really gets you thinking about how magnificent the legendary composers and pianists were. However, I think Chen would've done an equally good job after a few years, as many other great pianists. Great work!
Bravo, bravo! Excellent tempo and articulation, I am really impressed. Although I do believe you could change up the dynamics a bit more, since it sounds fortissimo 90% of the time. Yours is a close favorite of mine to Mei-ting Sun's 10-1.
Fantastic. I am looking at this etude for my licentiate diploma in 2009. The notes flow so effortlessly from this player's hands. The rhythm is perfect with a superb interpretation. I was lucky enough to see John Chen live on his tour of Australia. Well done.
nice to see some more New Zealand home grown talent :) I've been to concerts of this guy and talked to him a bit, hes really cool. I'ts nice to see a performace of this piece where it isn't all bashed out like so many other ones, excellent control.
Good performance, but ... sometimes I had the urge to make a copy with my synthesizer. I bet I can make a better performance with a synthesizer and put more emotion in it. This performance - how technically brilliant it is for sure - lacks the proper emotion.
Good. Middle melody is there. But how do Mr Ashkenazy and Berezovsky and Gavrilov get staccato at this fast tempo on their cd's . What a sound. Pollini out plays them all with total non-character pianistics. Who cares about Mr.Pollini. everybody i dunno why yet.
Great performance - most interpretations of this piece involve drowning out the notes with the pedal, but you've maintained a lot of the clarity. Also liked your use accents, which is vital in maintaining structure and interest in this piece.
In my opinion this is exactly how the Etude op 10 no 1 should be payed. Thank you for playing it as a work of Chopin and not as a 'virtuosity' show off. No need to prove a brillant technique that is obviously there.

The last note could have been more accentuated. But I agree that your technique is no worse than Kissin.

Flawless technique, I envy his ability to even play this piece.
But it's missing something big, like I can't feel anything.

HI, John!
You are fantastic! Your playing is better than that of Kissin or Richter! Don't listent to the criticism of some guys below.
They are very jealous of you!

you have clarity, but no articulation, i just heard Kissin Live in Hong Kong and he played this piece in perfect clarity and articulation~
legopiano 2 years ago
to legopiano -....well he is Kissin.
Is this guy a pro soloist ? I guess he's an
amateur pianist and consequently comparisons and remarks should be correctly put accordingly to the players'
level.

( his technique is perfect tho.)
but the piece sux
simkinave 2 years ago
No, the piece is a masterpiece. But you have to listen Richter, or Cortot, or Pollini etc. playing it. Then you'll understand...
marmasiotis 2 years ago 3
to simkinave - the piece or the rendition..?
Put aside any personal taste the piece is a true marvel and this rendition a bit flat
all through...But if you listen to Kempff or
Ashkenazy's performances these will sound as flat as this one eventhough
they are playing it faster.
Mind that this guy is not a pro soloist ...
that's why I wouldn't rate this rendition so sharply .
