I found this game a huge SHIT. The writing is very, very "over" (apparently written by a estudande communication), the idea is veery repetitive (like a mixture of that movie "Stay" with a touch of the game "Sanitarium") and the game sucks, you have to follow a fixed path (you can miss some places, as for example the huts, which makes no difference), and the character moves at a snail's pace. The ONLY thing you do in the game is to sink your finger on the "W" and walk forward until you finish.
This is basically a book in form of a game. Why can't people understand that? The mod, even if I didn't get the story per say, is marvelous. I loved it, and surely will buy this.
blah blah blah, fellas calling this art. let's talk seriously, this game could've been much better, it's kinda tedious, slowly wandering across a fucking huge land waiting for absolutely nothing to happen, besides a small spoken phrase. if at least it has a "run" button. anyway, awesome graphics, better i've ever seen, wish skyrim had such graphics.
this game is so emotional. I think games like these such as Shadow of the Colossus or Limbo are proof that games can transmit great stories and sensations. They don't give out the plot like any blockbuster, but it gives away clues of the events and make you read between the lines and feel like the character. I get a sense of immersion here that hundreds of Role-playing games, realistic strategy games or simulated first person shooters have unsuccessfully attempted for all these years.
english is not my native language so it was hard to understand so difficult words didn't understand much from the letters but a little too old game engine for a beatiful game but it was okay and the ending really felt you climbed that hill and i was really high i didn't get the ending why he jumped out of that tower? he said he's going to fly but wtf he just jumps down
@titioDApipoca What? That was hard to read. Valve didn't make this. Also if you're in the first person seeing everything it offers whole new possibilities for telling stories.
@kleinshooter yea i understand what you mean, but it isnt false advertising itself like dead island did. All you see in the trailer is in the game and more. I highly suggest you getting it if your intrested in something like this
@RMCLmaker I allready got it and played throug it, it took me 2 hours only :( for me, the part in the dungeon is the most amazing part ive ever seen in any ego shooter game!
@uberjens No. None of that. It's a game that you can set mindless violence aside and simply walk around a beautiful enviorment and listen to an immersive study.
If you feel like you should be shooting something, than this game is obviously not for you.
I enjoyed it very much, a nice change of pace from the other common games of today
@cquintanar41 the idea isn't to keep the viewer on rails but rather, keep them off of rails and far far away, which is shocking I know, but it will let players experience the story in as close to an unguided manner as they can.
They want you to use your imagination, to think on your own. For that alone, Dear Esther is one of the greater games I have played.
One of the best games I've played. It's deep and rich storyline is up there with Bioshock and game's alike. Few games (and films) had me feeling this emotionally (un)satisfied. It leaves you questioning everything you've witness, shocked, moved and excited. It proves games still have a lot of ground yet to explore.
Guys, shut up already. As To The Moon said, these kind of art games shouldn't be seen as games, nor books, nor movies, but yet, as a way of telling a story through viewing and hearing. But it is still classified as an Art Game.
Forget any preconceptions you have about Dear Esther. Nothing you have seen will prepare you for what you are about to see. Is it a game, is it art, is it poetry or perhaps a form of storytelling? Whatever Dear Esther is, it is a unique and inspiring experience. I am privileged to live in this era to have this experience. For a long time, I had a dream that games should be made with an artistic depth equivalent to films and novels. Dear Esther is one small step towards this direction.
You must all know this is not a game. The only thing you can do is walk and nothing else. This is something like you sit and reading a book, and you don't need to imagined only to watch.

@jo10704 not 30 mins. 2 hours if your pace it normally.
People have to understand this is a game that strives to be like a film. In fact, this game was a better experience than many films I've watched and I have seen a lot of films.
If you would spend 10 bucks to watch a 2 hour film, why not spend 10 bucks to experience a game that can give you an unforgettable experience. Games like this is one of a kind.
@tehx3n It was pretty cool, got goosebumps a few times when got to a beautiful view, but I didn't get the story, wish there was an explanation video here somewhere :S
@Vitzartti there Isn't an official explanation, everyones supposed to come to their own conclusion on what happened, but google it. There are many interesting interpretations.
@Margalus89 It's about exploring this great looking island, while picking of REALLY well hidden clues in order to form a story - a sad, romantic and tragi story - inside your own head. It's just... So awesome!
@Gamez4Review so you can interact with the world..and nothing more? not saying it sucks, just asking. i loved Amnesia and you only had a lantern there lol
@Margalus89 The funny part here is; You can't interact with the world. You can only walk. But it's actually really creepy and it's going to suck you in if you pay attention to the twisted story of the game...
@Gamez4Review i loved Amnesia 'cause you can just interact with the physic world and cannot do anything else..i'll love this for sure? hope it's out for Mac too, but i'll try it on my PC's first
Is there any command-line to reduce the voice volume? I wanted to increase the volume to hear the ambient sounds better, but the voice just pops in way too loud... =(
- If I download this on Steam, will I have to buy Half-life 2 as well?? I got two accounts and they won't let them merge. I found my password again but that one has HL2 on it and I mainly play with the one with no HL2 on it.
@Nazizombies222 Yeah it could make a really cool action/adventure game, but I think they wanted to go for the more artistic style deepness and being a passive experience.
I guess someone could always make a mod for it (ironic since it was originally a mod.)
to all you new people out there who haven't played half life 2 on PC, GET IT it is the best game ever to be created not to mention the thousands of custom mods which make it even more amazing
This looks really awesome. The graphics seem amazing, even at this relatively low resolution. The story appears to be very poetic, which is good. @xManFac3x If you have money for a console you have money for a decent gaming pc. They are not that expensive and you don't need to go all out with it. Even $300 laptops can handle battlefield 3 just not on max settings.
@Raiden1091 Yeah but that was the original one, I think it was a mod for half life 2. This is a retail version so there's no reason for it not to be on consoles, it's just another source engine game. You don't need HL2 to play this retail version, therefore it would work fine on consoles.
wow look at all the wannabe hardcore comments to me this looks great for such an old engine but yeah if you dont like it why are you all here argueing over what people play? go back to your call of duty and leave the rest of the world alone
@OKComquter The gameplay footage you saw in the video isn't the original Source mod from 2008... You really think games back then looked like that? This is a stand-alone remake of the mod and it isn't Source. Source has a unique art style and you can't see that in this video, so it should have been obvious.
@mkim1224 It's still the source engine, they say that on the website, the dev blog and the steam store page. More specifically it's the version used in Portal 2.
@mkim1224 Basically what Eateroftheflame said. I agree, games on the Source engine didn't look as good during 2008, but I was talking about how impressed I was that an 8 year old engine could be so heavily adapted and yet only require a 128 mb video card. Viva la Valve!
@Frizzi95 I mean that this game was essentially made by one guy Robert Briscoe using the valve. The write to release were bought of his by "thechineseroom". Find his youtube channel and it shows his progress over the last few years :)

@CarlosMiranda619 I should probably point out there isn't really gameplay to show, it's more of an interactive story than a game
eateroftheflame 3 weeks ago
@CarlosMiranda619 the gameplay is basically walking around and exploring.

Trailer's like Dear Esther makes me wish I had the money for a legit gaming computer.

@xManFac3x You only need about a gig of RAM.
Hamble250 4 weeks ago
@xManFac3x If you have money for a console you have money for a decent gaming pc. They are not that expensive and you don't need to go all out with it. Even $300 laptops can handle battlefield 3 just not on max settings.
Jarekthegamingdragon 2 weeks ago
@xManFac3x wel theese days a $ shall $800 suffice if u build it yourslef

@xManFac3x if you can play HL2 you can play this game..
akakentiy 2 weeks ago
@akakentiy the requirements are WAY higher then hl2
hl2 = pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
dear esther = intel core 2 duo 2.4Ghz

Why can't this be on consoles? :(
calumelliott 1 month ago
@calumelliott You can't have mods on consoles.
Raiden1091 1 month ago
@Raiden1091 Yeah but that was the original one, I think it was a mod for half life 2. This is a retail version so there's no reason for it not to be on consoles, it's just another source engine game. You don't need HL2 to play this retail version, therefore it would work fine on consoles.
calumelliott 1 month ago
@calumelliott If pc goes good then they want to bring it to mac/console.

Another stolen video by IGN.
MrShawnCourtney 1 month ago
@MrShawnCourtney Are you fucking stupid? It's a trailer, IGN posts trailers. How dumb can you be?
Joshawaable 1 month ago
@Joshawaable First of all, it's an indie game. There are no links to the developers channel or website. They do not support the developers.
MrShawnCourtney 1 month ago
@MrShawnCourtney It doesn't mean they stole the video.
Joshawaable 1 month ago
Source? An 8 year old engine can create games that look just as beautiful as Crysis or Battlefield 3? Oh man...
OKComquter 1 month ago 9
@OKComquter The gameplay footage you saw in the video isn't the original Source mod from 2008... You really think games back then looked like that? This is a stand-alone remake of the mod and it isn't Source. Source has a unique art style and you can't see that in this video, so it should have been obvious.
mkim1224 1 month ago
@mkim1224 It's still the source engine, they say that on the website, the dev blog and the steam store page. More specifically it's the version used in Portal 2.
eateroftheflame 1 month ago
@mkim1224 Basically what Eateroftheflame said. I agree, games on the Source engine didn't look as good during 2008, but I was talking about how impressed I was that an 8 year old engine could be so heavily adapted and yet only require a 128 mb video card. Viva la Valve!

@Frizzi95 I mean that this game was essentially made by one guy Robert Briscoe using the valve. The write to release were bought of his by "thechineseroom". Find his youtube channel and it shows his progress over the last few years :)
