When musical mob created the first 8bar (grime) track it was quickly boycotted by the old garage gaurd. To avoid lockdown 8bar producers and MC's got together on pirate radio putting out loads of new material. Subsequently 8bar and all previous dark garage tracks was renamed grime, a new subgenre that fans could identify. Dubstep however had also formed it's own seperate scene. It only brushed with grime at club FWD. The 2 scenes are NOT related, a track is either dubstep or grime, not both.

The reason people start sub genres is usually because people in the host genre don't like their music. Grime and dubstep would not be what they are today if they didn't break away from garage. A lot of the older producers in garage tried to boycot dubstep and then grime to the point of shop owners refusing to sell records, so they broke away from the garage scene. UK music evolves very fast due to these breakups and sub genres usually go on to be full genres / scenes. UK scene is very elitist.
