  • You must hit the gas pedal before turning on the car, and then let it warm up. After the car is warmed up, and then hot the gas pedal again to allow the car's idle to be normal 1000rpm. It is a choke flaw with this Honda model. when the car is warmed up, and then this car is a beast! Had mine for over nine years starting from 146,000 miles and now 205000 miles, and still going. Only replaced my alternator twice, starter once and radiator and water pump once and time belt just once. Not bad :)

  • i got the same problem dude. its probably a simple carb issue like needing a cleaning, once i ind out ill let you know but if you have already, let me know

  • ever since the temperature dropped my 88 accord starts normally but after a few seconds starts running bad sounds like a model T until it warms up then the rpms stay around 3500+ cant figure it out.

  • Ah, if I am not mistaken, the '88 Accord LX was still CARBURETED...DUH!!!!!! I didn't even hear the gas being pumped ONCE!!!!!!!! LEARN TO START A CARBURETED CAR, THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM!!!!

  • no mine does the same and i pump like hell

  • Yours may very well have some issues with the carburetor & that is why it takes so long to start even though you pump like hell but what I am saying is that in THIS video I did not hear the driver pump the gas once which leads me to believe that they have little to no experience with carbureted vehicles.

  • Actually, I think the carb accord of that generation only had 98 hp.

  • Pee on the battery

  • ...its carbed....and it fired on the first short crank...just give it a pump or two before turning the key and hold the gas down half way when cranking...

  • its a carb...i had an 88 LX pump it twice, turn the key and guaranteed itll run first time every time...even on 40 below 0 days..im in NY itll even work.

  • watching the video, looks like you might have a carbureted motor though.

  • I recently bought a `87 accord lxi hatchback, Same issue. My personal mechanic told me it was the seals on the injectors leaking. Not holding fuel pressure after you turn it off.

Bought new seals from oriley's and had my mechanic install em, and starts right up instant every time now.

  • was the PGM-FI light on? because what you said is happening to me right now.. an i have the same car..

  • actually it still started having problems on it's own. I just hold the gas pedal at 50% each time i crank it and cope with it *shrug* it's an old car, runs fine once it's running.

I just bought a `88 acura integra though, going to replace the slow, boring accord :)

  • hmm.. i crank it for a few turns of the engine, wait a second then i crank it again and it starts

umm you do know the accords a bit faster then the teg? tegs push about 116hp and the accords that are fuel injected push around 122hp

  • the accords are 122hp yes, an they're 2.0L, but they also weigh 2800lbs (according to the titles i have on both cars).

the `88 teg is 1.6L 112hp, but it's DOHC, (also fuel injected) and only weighs 2200lbs. The accord has "traditional" coil-over suspension, the teg has superior torsion-bar suspension in the front.

Also, the gearing on the accord is much taller, and the accord redlines at 5.5k rpm's, the teg redlines factory at 8k.

The teg's are drasticly superior in every design point.

  • yeah i have the a20a3 so its about 122hp.. but i have an intake so it might be higher.. but my 87 accord lx-i redlines at 6400rpm.. but yeah the tegs are superior but theres too many people that have them here.. so i decided to get something people dont see much here.. which is my 87 accord

  • haha good choice.

if the teggy starts to feel slow after a while, do what i did and find a wrecked 91 accord with an f22a4 and cram it into a 90 civic sedan

fuckin quick, all motor... i can outrun mustangs easy

i put the d16a6 from the civic on a go-kart and about killed myself

  • thats an lx-i you have, isn't it?

  • mine or the video poster?

  • its not fuel injected

  • My sister had a 88 Accord DX in high school. The guy at the Honda Specialist Mechanics Office just told us to push the gas pedal 2 or 3 times before you start it and it should fire up. We did it everytime and it fired on the first key turn.

  • kingj88, all that does is reset the choke I believe. If you listen at 00:14-00:15 my 87 Accord DX made that same sound continuously on very cold days. What my uncle did was opened my hood and tapped on my starter with a wrench and then it fired right up. What I found out from Autozone the next day was that my solenoid was sticking and not engaging an electric spark to start the engine. Sometimes it would move, other times it wouldn't. That might be the case with this car or not. Hard to tell.

  • no its not the starter cuz you can hear it trying to start...

it is hard to tell, with it being carbed all you have to pump the gas

  • yeah take a shit on the started then turn it on and also pee down the gas tank hole then take a shit in the oil

  • take a pee on the battery

  • Hahahahaha Whats that gonna do, warm it up? =) Maybe he should take a crap on the starter too, just to be safe

  • Yep, that should do it!

  • pee on the battery

  • sound like its not fireing complely check the spark plugs

  • Thats not terribly bad for a car that is almost 20 yrs old.

  • Yeah, it may take a few seconds longer to start, but most cars from 1988 are dead and gone.
