The Wehrmacht military present were always able to see the site that became the death pit, so its didn't take place during the battle. @historatia During a major Soviet offensive the city was swarming with escaping refugees, under artillery fire ! During the siege, Germans were suffering from hunger and many have died of typhus in the summer of 1945. After the offensive, there were missing Russian and Polish forced laborers made to work for the Germans in the area. There were even Italian prisoners there. Bodies (of other nationalities too) were strewn all over Malbork, then gathered and buried together.

das was deine urgroßmutter erleben musste war ja leider keine seltenheit. auch in meiner familie gab es solche fälle. das elsass und baden sind auch kulturell sehr ähnlich, ich war mal in düsseldorf, da ist schon allein die mentalität eine ganz andere. baden mag ich gerne, weil ich immer so denke: auch wenn die deutschen anteile im elsass untergehen, ein bisschen elsass lebt in baden weiter.

With the contributions (Swedish from Gotland, Russian from Pskov, Kasubian from near Danzig, Masurian from south of Wormditt, Pommeranian with ancient roots originating in the Netherlands, a great-grandmother who was Polish from Schlobitten and more recently Hessian (father's side) with Hugenot through a great-great Grandmother, it makes for an interesting family history.

The witness statements who described the herded children and women driven by whipping towards the pit by the Polish militia have existed for years but were uncorroborated. They were made to undress (hence no metal things like buckles and clothing were found.

The Wehrmacht military present were always able to see the site that became the death pit, so its didn't take place during the battle. The days that followed are chronicled and the Russians ( Rokossovski 48th Infantry army moved through and the Polish Militia was put in charge. The killing happened AFTER that.

@historatia During a major Soviet offensive the city was swarming with escaping refugees, under artillery fire ! During the siege, Germans were suffering from hunger and many have died of typhus in the summer of 1945. After the offensive, there were missing Russian and Polish forced laborers made to work for the Germans in the area. There were even Italian prisoners there. Bodies (of other nationalities too) were strewn all over Malbork, then gathered and buried together.

Nie rozumiem jednego, istnieje w Niemczech dużo środowisk narodowych które bezkresnie narzekają na to że Polacy odebrali im tyle ziemii ale wyjaśnijmy główne kwestie. @odinsblade88 Das ist nicht richtig. Die Sovjets nahmen von den Polen NUR dass was in 1919 von deren Laendern bei eine polnishe Agression genommen war. Die Gebiete (Litauen, Belarus, Ost Galicien) waren oestlich der Curzon Linie und warne NICHT mit polnischer Mehrheit bevoelkert. Die "League of Nation" hat die Polen zurrueck befohlen aber die Polen taten dass NICHT. (Und deswegen den Molotov/Ribbentrop Abschluss) und damit auch der Krieg.

@hladami4 Your knowledge is insufficient. The Pomeranian/Prussian area (and I come from there) was NEVER majority Polish settled. The people there, Slav and Germanic did NOT want Konrad to have it and the Teutonic Knights took it and developed it. The Polani were an aggressive "upriver" tribe. The Kasubians (and that includes me) were NOT Polish and are not of polish origin. The Marsurians who VOTED in 1919 chose 99.32% to remain with Germany. General Charles de Gaulle was WRONG.

@hladami4 If you search a little more, you will also find that Norman Davies was refused tenure because his version of Polish history is so biased as to be pro-Polish propaganda story, He received his Ph.D. from Cracow University having first wanting to write about the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1920. When told by the Communists that officially such a war never took place, he agreed to write about other things for his thesis. With that Norman Davies lost all intellectual integrity.

@flyabroom By now, with the collapse of the communist system and the entry of Poland into Europe had Poland once again trying to play the big wheel major power, like at the Treaty of Lisbon, and trying to push Lithuania on the pipeline and hydro corridor issues. Doesn't Poland EVER learn? Any now trying to force the Germans to not have their settlement history in Pomerania and Prussia memorialized can do nothing but remind Germans of the post war horrors of the expulsion of millions.
