This scene still gets me sobbing even now.Despite having watched John Adams so many times.Beautifully acted and so real. They were more than lovers they were best friends he needed her so much.
This scene made me cry so much when I first saw it. It seemed so much more genuine and emotional than most big, dramatic death scenes we usually see on tv or movies. Lovely scene. <3

Oh I'm a history major in school, and I absolutely adore this miniseries. This is by far one of, if not, the best scenes in this series. Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti are magnificent. So excited to be taking a whole class on the American Revolution just now.
54 years together through times that would test any marriage of souls. I remeber how my own grandmother passed only a few months after my grandfather...... not because of poor health, only due to her broken heart after losing her best friend after 61 years together.
You know I'm 16 and I really don't like history all that much; because I feel what happened in the passed is behind us, BUT my history teacher showed this movie to us In class and it took about a month to get through but ya know I absolutely fell in love with this movie! John was a great man and awesome husband, father, and leader. I think we all can learn from him and his wife... she played a big part in a lot of the decisions he made! What an awesome love story they had! This sene is so so sa
@Missfearless1994 I'm a bit concerned you see history that way, because what was history made the present...along with it's merits and mistakes that have shaped society. And many of the mistakes of the past that have not been learned from end up reocurring in the present and future.
@kardentyrell you know your right, i have never really looked at it that way, i have learend to try to understand it better, and watching this movie has helped me better understand what these men have done for this beautiful country i call home. because if it wasnt for them i may not be able to say i live in a free land!!
A beautiful scene. I'll always remember the juxtaposition of the newly bloomed flowers against the setting of Abigail slowly fading from life, and "don't go away from me my friend", a beatiful line showing John's love for her.
All I can say is Thank God, he didn't burn the letters. Martha Washington did after the General passed. They'd given so much of their personal lives to the country, they wanted the private kept private, but what a loss to history now. Reading Abigail's correspondence and John's replies, always beginning: "My Dearest Friend," is wonderful. Nothing shows what people from history were really like as PEOPLE than their own words. Thank God, he didn't burn the letters. God rest them both.
They were best friends, the loves of each others lives and one of the founding families of our nation. What excellent casting and a touching scene. Someday I'll be able to watch this scene and not get sad......someday far, far off.
@tilthage Just make sure you're looking close enough to recognize it. I hope I am looking unbiased enough as well ^^ btw. These two were an inspiration. I count myself among their fortunate descendants.
My friend. Despite their trials and tribulations, that's the key to their marriage, extraordinary considering it was pre-victorian age. They were friends. Nowadays, people don't know who they're marrying, and they divorce at the first insult. Can anyone, outside of a military couple, imagine being separated for years, with only the letter as a means of communication, and still remaining married?
She was his best friend and inspiration for everything he wrote and said....
It was even a change in their generation to marry as dear friends...back then it was for attraction, political, and money connection....some of these trats are still around today, but I agree-they strived-more than people do today...
my girlfriend and i have known each other since the 3rd grade and 16 years later she is my best friend. We own this movie and weve always based our love on the love that abigail and john had for each other. She cried during this scene cuz she knew that day will come eventually
they had the perfect marriage they did everything right. its a shame most marraiges arent like that today. marry for the right reasons be faithful trustworthy and everything else will fall into place

I hate to burst your bubble, but the marriage was far from perfect, historically speaking: John was absent for a very large portion of their early years. He was also a stubborn old grump sometimes even with her: when Charles was banished, it broke his mother's heart-he was her favorite child and poor Abigail probably was powerless to stop John from doing what he did, even if she felt differently. (There is evidence Charles was gay, btw.)
im well aware of the history but think of it this way benjamin franklin was married and had himself a mistress in france John adams never once cheated on Abigail and vise versa...john being away for those years was for a reason either his job or his fight for independence John is extremely underated in our history and his life is not taugh in school to kids every thing is washington....skip to jefferson and ben franklin
I admit, it is sad that he isn't taught more. I also admit that I got an earful about his life as I grew up about 15 miles from what was his front door; I never needed to look up much about Colonial history as it quite literally is all around me (we sometimes even find musket balls and the like hanging around when there is digging to do.)
Adams is the ONLY Founding Father without a Washington DC monument. I've been to his birthplace and to Peacefield and UFPC, etc, but he still isn't given NEARLY the recognition that other people have. You may have learned about Adams in Quincy/Braintree. In California, I didn't know who he was truly until I was grown and watch 1776.
I cried through this entire episode. A wonderful series, beautifully filmed and outstanding acting by Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney. I can't wait to get the DVD.
I don't care what you say, John and Abby beat Romeo and Juliet any day, dear God Paul and Laura's chemistry was just perfect, they played their roles so well and their intensity was almost palpable, I'm desperate to watch this series again! John Adams is WONDERFUL! All of you should watch it if you just happened across this video XD
I totally agree! I thoroughly enjoyed both performances by Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney. I found their chemistry to be amazing throughout the whole mini-series. I cried with them every time John Adams had to leave. I must admit, I had never cried in front of a TV like I did when Abigail died. Heart wrenching! No love story is better than this real life one. I am glad they have both won numerous awards for their roles. They deserved it!
Laura Linney and Paul Giamatti deserved to win their Golden Globe awards tonight- congratulations to them both, as well as to Tom Wilkinson (Ben Franklin) and the entire cast/crew for the award for Best Mini series!!
Thank you very much for uploading these scenes. This was a superb miniseries. You have already done much, but if you are in an uploading mood...perhaps John Adams' and Jefferson's late-life correspondence scene?

times and our country would have had it
rougher if he hadn't. He never would have
been able, if not for her.
A true love-match and partnership.

so ironic that john and Jefferson died the same year, the same month, the same day. only one died in the morning.
and also, i read somewhere that Abigail was about 8 years younger than john. or something like that.
