@BelAirLongboard The video features and still photo quality are identical on the 550D and 7D. Only go for the 7D if you want faster shooting, better AF, tougher body etc. Don't forget the 600D which is essentially a 550D with an articulated screen - great for video. See my reviews at cameralabs . com!
I recently got a 7D and found that the images I take at ISOs 100 200 and 400 ( lower values) are very noisy. I had a Rebel Xs before this and had no such issues with it at these ISOs . People told me that the 7D takes really sharp images but Im not able to get any. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
@sairam6087 Were you shooting JPEG or RAW, and did you change any settings, like the noise reduction? I'd recommend joining the cameralabs forum and posting an example image in the Canon section so we can help diagnose it.
@cameralabs I was shooting RAW. I didn't change any settings other than Aperture Shutter speed and ISO ... I tried out the Av Tv and M modes and all modes result in the same kind of noisy image in ISOs as low as 100 !.. I'll put up an image on the forums.. Thanks for helping me out.. It's very weird!
hi i need to buy a dslr for my architecture studies and i really dont know which one to buy. can u recommend me a good one for amateur good price/quality with a good lens?
canon 5d mark ii for sale with 2 lens 24-105 mm and a 50 mm and battery with charger also 2 16gb flash memory cards and a speed light flash inbox me if you are interested great condition !!!!
@euyoooo in that case you may have to choose one of the L series. They are a little bit more expensive though. for example, i use the 24-105mm F/4 and it's really great for focusing. But remember, if you really want to get into videos, then just put the lens on Manual. I mean, the camera does not always know what you want to capture and focus the wrong thing. So, just think about it and let me know if you need more advice :D
@GarettIsHere it's pretty good though, although the missing IS which you get on the Canon 24-105 F/4. less money for more zoom but less aperture... your choise, but good question!
i just bought the EOS 7D a couple of days ago from Best Buy They had it online for $1589.99 The Battle creek, Mi store was the only one that had some in stock around my location They honored the online price. I was HAPPY AS HELL!!!!! Went back the next day to buy another one and came to find out that the price was a mistake on their website and was priced back to the $1899.99 price. The manager said he would let me get another one for $1699.00 which is still saving $200.00.
Which one (Canon 7D or Nikon D7000) do you think is better for video recordings? Also, i'm gonna need to record like 10-15 takes of about 4 minutes each, how many GB do you think i'll need? Thanks a lot! :)
that depends on your needs, but if just for video, go for the 550d or 600d and put magic lantern on it. Or if your budget allows it, buy a 5D. But you will have to focus manually to get proper video quality. Else, go for a camcorder.

Hello I want to buy a Canon 7D, but the lens that comes with the body, here in Portugal, is the EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I read somewhere that it is a good lens, but for outdoor, general use. I want to ask what lens is good for indoors, low light pictures at night, for general use, landscapes and indoors without flash and telephoto. Someone talk me out of the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM or EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM. Can you help me? Thanks a lot
great reviews Gordon, as always, one question pls if i may< does this camera have an intervalometer mode for timelapse shooting options? Will appreciate ur input on the matter greatly, thanx in advance
Hi Gordon, after watching your videos and saw your recommended lenses on your website, I splurged into a 7D and canon 50mm f/1.4 lens, the combination is absolutely stunning!
I've watched your d7000 review a few days ago, just wanted to say that review was amazing! good combination between entertainment and review by checking out the camera outside :D and in practise. I really got shocked by the small buffersize of the d7000 though ...
Question: If your buffer is filled and you keep shooting in continious with a fast memory card (60mb/s). What is the advantage with a fast memory card compared to a slow (15mb/s) ??
@cameralabs Will the buffer send images to the card whilst shooting continious?? e.g. Like whenever the buffer is filled and per second it clears 3 images you will be able to shoot 3 images per second?
by the way: do you think camera's in the near future will be introduced with SD-card slot or CF-card slot?
@cameralabs For some reason the fps is not as fast when I shoot with Al Servo on my 7D; and this is the most convenient one for continuous shooting as it follows the subject around. Both the ISO expansion and the long exposure noise reduction are disabled, so I don't know what it could be... Any advice would be much appreciated!
Hi Gordon, I really enjoy watching your videos, very professional, articulate and thorough. I own a Canon 450D and contemplating upgrading to a 5D but can't yet afford it, then I realized that buying a 7D will be a great addition to my arsenal even after buying the 5D, the 7D is an excellent camera especially with the Digic 4 processor, it has a great solid body and is weather resistant. It reminds a bit of the 40D or the early 35mm A1 (which I still own) in the sense that they are timeless.
Hi Gordon, hoping you can help. I'm a filmmaker rather than a photographer and am looking to buy the Canon 5D Mk2 or Canon EOS 7D. I've watched and read all of your reviews but am still torn. The pros and cons of each seem to cancel one another out - I'm leaning towards the 5D Mk2 because of the quality of the image but the 7D seems very similar, if not better (in that it has 19 focus points, level gage, is heavier, has options with frame rates) but is a lot cheaper, only confusing me further.
@FilmsByFatRatFilms I say go to 5D Mark II, from what I've heard the 7D overheats much faster than the 5D Mark II. You also get full-frame which is nice. :)
@JohnHFilms The 7D overheats for the following reasons:
- CF Card close to being full - Solution is to upgrade to larger storage.
- Weather sealing - No solution
- Internal battery discharging releases heat - Solution get a battery grip and use those batteries instead.
As you can see the reason for overheating is mostly when shooting video for a lengthy time, resulting in filling up the CF card, and battery discharge.
hey gordon love all of your reviews .. here is my problem . i want a good dslr but not sure witch one to get . i am a novice and i love to do outside shots and most of all night time photos .. of neon lights and things of that nature i am stuck between the 60 d and 7 d not sure witch one here in canada it is 1300 for the 60d body and 1800 for the 7d so is there any reason why i should get the 7d or just save the rest of the 500 and put it twords a new l series lense .
But what's the deal with continues shooting? If you use the movie mode you get like 60 pictures a second at the most =D
Either way, I'm looking forward to the day when frame rate and resolution are independent and entirely optional.
Wouldn't it be cool to dial in the pixels exactly to for example 2520x1080 at a frame rate of 47. Or shooting 18MP 24 frames per second, so you have the option in post to zoom it digitaly to HD.
Gordon your reviews are the best in the youtube or else where. I always look first for you review so I have professionally delivered opinion to compare the other in to. Thank you very much and keep up the good work!
Hello sir, i am planning to buy my own DSLR and i have a lil problem... i have no idea about them and i have no idea about the prices. So can you help me or recommend a DSLR for beginners? Just for starters, i'm a newbie on this kind of things, so i want to buy a cheap one with good functions and has very good capture capabilities. I hope you can help me sir! Thanks! -aj
Although it is none of my business what you do with your money, keep in mind this camera is not cheap at all! and even if you buy a cheap DSLR (about $500 for the body alone) you still need to buy a few lenses and accesories! so think to yourself, are you being paid to take photos? do you need a DSLR? what would you use it for? family photos?...a point and shoot with manual control sounds more proper for a beginner. just my humble opinion.
@jdcontrol thanks for your opinion but, i am not being paid to take photos, yes i need it as my new "hobby", i'll use it to capture all the things around me(family pics, capture my toy/game collections, some pics when i'm on a trip, make videos for youtube too). money is not a problem for me humble sir. :)
Gordon, first congratulation for your top notch reviews. Question : can you tell me if it is possible to do time-lapse shooting via the provided software on a connected PC? Thanks a lot and greetings from Brussels.
@yurigglutube You can use the EOS Utility to start and stop recording, BUT videos are only recorded to the internal card, not direct to your hard disk.
@tangkag879 They may have the same resolution and movie modes, but the 7D is much faster, tougher, better AF, better controls, better viewfinder, more customisation, but bigger, heavier and more expensive. But the quality between them is the same. Please read my reviews at cameralabs . com for the full story.
@cameralabs I recently bought d Canon 7D and very satisfied. However, when use Live View to take photos, the shutter sound is weird. It sounds like "lacking" of power. Also, I found out that when I connect the camera to my laptop (Windows 7 64-bit), the ON/OFF button for Live View shooting is not working. I can only click on the arrows keys to focus. The ON/OFF buttons for "focus" and "depth of field" is not working. Do you have any idea what happened? Is it due to Windows 7 64bit? thx
Hello cameralabs - great reviews - very helpful :-)
I'm tryign to decide which DSLR to purchase for independent film making. The 5D II or the 7D ... For pure film making which is best do you think? Your other reviews seem to suggest 7D is faster and 5D II is better image quality. Which way would you jump on filming only usage?
Hi Cameralabs - I'm loving your reviews, thanks. I'm an independent film-maker who is about to purchase a DSLR to complement the standard video camera so we can get all those juicy shots we photographers love to add to our films. My question is this....
Should I buy the EOS D5 II or the 7D if my main purpose will be for filming?
one important question, really: is the canon eos 7d the best video-shooting dslr camera these days or is there another one coming this year? I would highly appreciate a response, thanks a lot!
@dallasbagley Sry, but I don't have one yet... I hope I can myself one within the next two weeks... I highly recommend checking out philip blooms interview: /watch?v=dZJ2_7X4BT0
I want the 7D one day, but for now i'm very pleased with my 550D. Check out my channel for a look at my videos shot with it! Great little camera that easily rivals the 7D.
@honkeysheaven I'd recommend applying to be a staff writer at a publication you respect. But remember while product journalism lets you play with lots of new toys, the pay is terrible.
@honkeysheaven you'd have to check with your local papers and magazines - I can't speak for where you live. Check the job ads in the media sections of your paper.

can u give me an advice on a lens for the 7d ??! I want one that is very quite when autofocusing !!!
I'll be using this camera sometimes for video. So I want when I press on the AF button, the lens would auto focus quickly and quietly !!!!
If u replied I would be thankful

@euyoooo any of canons usm lenses such as 15-85mm or 70-200mm are very quiet and fast, i hav both and are excellent.

@euyoooo in that case you may have to choose one of the L series. They are a little bit more expensive though. for example, i use the 24-105mm F/4 and it's really great for focusing. Canon EOS 7D or Canon 5D Mark II for movie making? Please help!!!
Diffrentjamsith 7 months ago
5D Mark II it has a full frame sensor and it serves very well in low light, BUT it's 24 fps only !!!
but u'll trade that with crop sensor on the 7d and 30 fps 1080 HD, up to 60 fps on 720 HD !!
so it's ur choice really. both are really good just make sure u'll get macro lenses with them.
watch this watch?v=4dn-Xivbu7E for the 5d
watch this watch?v=5kPHAyyayUE for the 7d
depending on ur use really, 7d is very fast, 5d is a bit more sharp in low lights

1TuBe1983 1 year ago
Hi Gordon, after watching your videos and saw your recommended lenses on your website, I splurged into a 7D and canon 50mm f/1.4 lens, the combination is absolutely stunning!
MrKnnknn 1 year ago
Three questions..
1. Witch brand do you prefer? (Canon, Nikon, Sony etc.)
2. What is the best Digital SLR you would recommend for shooting skateboarding videos and macro flower foliage photography?
*NOTE* I am not talking about lenses, I am talking about cameras.

MVC7CVM 1 year ago
@MVC7CVM A quicker card will clear the buffer faster, making the camera ready to shoot again sooner.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@cameralabs Will the buffer send images to the card whilst shooting continious?? e.g. Like whenever the buffer is filled and per second it clears 3 images you will be able to shoot 3 images per second?
by the way: do you think camera's in the near future will be introduced with SD-card slot or CF-card slot?
Cheers, from a belgian fan of your reviews :D

It reminds a bit of the 40D or the early 35mm A1 (which I still own) in the sense that they are timeless.

getting the t2i. im smart.
goo6 1 year ago
Hi Gordon, hoping you can help. I'm a filmmaker rather than a photographer and am looking to buy the Canon 5D Mk2 or Canon EOS 7D. I've watched and read all of your reviews but am still torn. The pros and cons of each seem to cancel one another out - I'm leaning towards the 5D Mk2 because of the quality of the image but the 7D seems very similar, if not better (in that it has 19 focus points, level gage, is heavier, has options with frame rates) but is a lot cheaper, only confusing me further.
FilmsByFatRatFilms 1 year ago
@FilmsByFatRatFilms I say go to 5D Mark II, from what I've heard the 7D overheats much faster than the 5D Mark II. You also get full-frame which is nice. :)
JohnHFilms 1 year ago

MrGolddenboy 1 year ago
Great reviews =)
But what's the deal with continues shooting? If you use the movie mode you get like 60 pictures a second at the most =D
Either way, I'm looking forward to the day when frame rate and resolution are independent and entirely optional.
Wouldn't it be cool to dial in the pixels exactly to for example 2520x1080 at a frame rate of 47. Or shooting 18MP 24 frames per second, so you have the option in post to zoom it digitaly to HD.

Thanks! -aj
tomanatorness 1 year ago
@tomanatorness
Although it is none of my business what you do with your money, keep in mind this camera is not cheap at all! and even if you buy a cheap DSLR (about $500 for the body alone) you still need to buy a few lenses and accesories! so think to yourself, are you being paid to take photos? do you need a DSLR? what would you use it for? family photos?...a point and shoot with manual control sounds more proper for a beginner. just my humble opinion.
jdcontrol 1 year ago
@jdcontrol thanks for your opinion but, i am not being paid to take photos, yes i need it as my new "hobby", i'll use it to capture all the things around me(family pics, capture my toy/game collections, some pics when i'm on a trip, make videos for youtube too). money is not a problem for me humble sir. :)

Gordon, first congratulation for your top notch reviews. Question : can you tell me if it is possible to do time-lapse shooting via the provided software on a connected PC? Thanks a lot and greetings from Brussels.
Anditworks 1 year ago
@Anditworks Yes, the EOS Utility includes intervalometer features which would allow you to program a time-lapse sequence.

One thing I didn't understand, is it possible to shoot video via EOS Utility?
yurigglutube 1 year ago
@yurigglutube You can use the EOS Utility to start and stop recording, BUT videos are only recorded to the internal card, not direct to your hard disk.

I need a DSLR that comes with a lens and under about $1,200. The size doesn't quite matter that much, what I need in order is:
1) Great picture quality, like D90
2) Great video quality, like T2i
3) Great auto focus, fast auto focus?
4) Fast speed, for pictures and following subject in video
Cameras I currently have in mind are Canon EOS Rebel T2i, Canon EOS 60D, Nikon D90, and Sony Alpha DSLR-A580

@tangkag879 No, the 7D is much higher-end. The 550D and T2i are the same model.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@cameralabs I dont see any difference bitween the functionsnof both and feautures
tangkag879 1 year ago

Many thanks,
David

@utoob67 - Have you considered the new 60D for film use? It's got better audio controls and a tiltable screen.
Mubble 1 year ago
Hi Cameralabs - I'm loving your reviews, thanks. I'm an independent film-maker who is about to purchase a DSLR to complement the standard video camera so we can get all those juicy shots we photographers love to add to our films. My question is this....
Should I buy the EOS D5 II or the 7D if my main purpose will be for filming?
Cheers, David

24-105 = 38.5mm in 35mm terms at the wide end - not very wide.
Would a 17-55 EFS f2.8 be better? Effectively equivalent to the 24-70 f2.8 on the 5D

I have to disagree.
If Canon wanted this to be the 60D, they would have named it the 60D
Is this the "true" successor to the XXD line?
I would have to say yes.

@honkeysheaven you'd have to check with your local papers and magazines - I can't speak for where you live. Check the job ads in the media sections of your paper.
