Great inspiring soundtrack to one of the greatest films ever made. Hilarious uplifting brilliant. The scene wheb Harold looks at us all having got rid of his first date is awesome. Love it.
Bud is a superb actor. Cat come back to us my friend. We love and miss you. Trouble please set me free....I can see deaths disguise. I am beat. I am torn. Much to shocking to see. I don't want a fight.
This film has become a Cult Classic and I surely see why! I've been watching it since it came out (& got the video) A Great "Message Film" truly Many Messages here to learn from! ♥Love & ☮☮☮☮
The best scene in this film is when Harold turns to look at the camera after successfully scaring off his first date. Actually, it's the best scene in the whole fucking history of motion cinema. Ha ha, not really, but it was improvised and just too damn good for words.
I almost always hate these viewer made montages of songs instead of the real video... but yours is awesome. Especially the very end where Harold and Maude are sitting in the Emeryville mudflats looking towards the San Francisco skyline. Thanks for paying tribute to my favorite film of all time.
most people miss the moment near the end when harold and maud are sidding gazing out to see...harold notices some numbers tatooed on mauds arm and asks about them she bruses him off with a iit dosent matter remark...but it does matter it is the reason for her force of nature spirit...and her decicion to die at 80.....beautyful movie...
@MrCrispian its because maude went to a concentration camp correct? thats why they are there. but what do they have to do with dying at the age of 80?
@rebeccablacksfanclub harold and maude is a film about death and resurrection, where death and life overlap.maude conciders death as part of the life cycle,Maude cannot hide her inner missery at the loss of her husband..i feel mude had decided long ago to die at 80,Asbury got her to play most of the scenes for laughs but now and then a sad side of maude shows through, she is indeed the life affiming earth godess that now her work with Harold is through..goes..its a suitable ending.dont you think?
@MrCrispian yea. i really like how harold changes through the movie. i feel as if the suicide attempts in the beginning were because he wanted attention, but by the end he had a whole new view of life. love for maude changes him, it as though his obsession of death changes into an obsession for compassion and love. i really wish the made the last scene maudes funeral, because i wanted to know what haorld would do.
Harold and Maude probably sparked off a series of "Coming of Age" films. A flop when first released and they say "College kids in the 70s made it trendy". lies. Bad News Bears with Tatum O'neal and "Bless the beast (and the children.. yeah named after the Carpenters song) were 2 other well known 70s and of course all of John Hugh type films in the 80s and eventually American Pie in the late 90s and 2k. Oh and Animal House in 78. Andrew McCartney's Homage scene of hanging in "Class" of Harold
I agree with most of the comments. The film and the acting are both sublime. But you also have to hand it to Vivian Pickles who plays Harold's mother. I think that is one of the campiest and most fun roles on screen.
I have yet to have seen this movie but I heard a lot of good about it from a girl I love a lot ;) It looks brilliant but like Rush in Rio... I refuse to watch it without her, it would be sad to ruin such a beautiful moment, toutes mes premières fois... je les veux avec toi ♥
For a lovely beautiful haunting movie it had it's dull moments. Cat saved the day. Bud Cort was,. when you think hard about it, not that good in his role. And the script was disjointed.
As in Life ... Harold and Maude is either a movie that speaks to you ... or does not.
++ Viewing Harold and Maude, in a packed Boston audience, with Ruth Gordon making a personal appearance in 1975 ... is a memory I will cherish for a lifetime.
** Kissing scene was removed as it was believed to be "over the top."
** Fu!# War ... not in film due to PG rating. PG-13 came around in 1980's.
** Seeing film "alone" and on a DVD, without the energy of an audience, will make a difference.
I only want to be around people that understand this movie.. Totally got it then and it is good to remind ourselves about good music..Also it made me paly a musical instrument..Maude said everyone should paly a intstrument..also try something NEW everyday!!
I lived in the Bay Area when this was filmed in 71 and I saw it in a theater that year and it has been my favorite movie my entire life. LOVE IT, as well as the soundtrack which is all Cat Stevens.
I've recently started listening to Cat Stevens again and realized just how powerful his voice and songwriting is. Listening to this song, this realization is furthered.
Bud Cort was in MASH the 1970 American Academy Award-winning satirical dark comedy film &Gas! 1970. Both before Harold and Maude, Which is one of the best movies ever. I would love to see the deleted parts.
Greatest movie ever made, hands down. It's a shame most people have never heard of Bud Cort; he's really underrated. He has the most expressive face. And of course Ruth Gordon is phenomenal. Everything - the acting, the music, the direction and the message - is perfect.
@Blondiegrrl same i wish he acted more i loved this movie soo much and when i first got it out from a dvd shop when i was on holidays every 6 months from then i would get it out and watch it i used to pee my self almost laughing at the things maude would doo lol and u gotta love harolds eyes
@Blondiegrrl weird movie-- but i still loved it-- and ruth was beautiful on this one, she was so full of life- and the music was perfect in getting the main message across-- 2 thumbs up!!
this movie has changed the way i look at things. It was so powerfull in the way of pulling peoples heart strings. The only two movies i can think of that are this strong are phantom of the opera(musical verssion w/gerard butler) and Harold And Maude.
There are few movies I know which have that power... goosebumps, tears, such strong emotional punch... To Kill A Mockingbird, The Dead.. Harold and Maude.. whew. Am feeling breathless..
A truly transcendent, and one of the finest films ever crafted... and the blending of Cat Stevens' music with such moving imagery and hell, who am I kidding? This one is beyond my feeble attempts to pay tribute. Suffice to say, it stands in my all-time top ten, it moves me now same as the first time I experienced it... and as i write this, i pause to brush the tears which welled up...
Harold and Maude is pure cinematic art. Every scene deftly constructed by skilled hands. These wonderfully talented individuals came together and created something magical. Not a single wasted word or moment. Each time I watch it I feel uplifted. How could you not be? Superb performances by Bud and Ruth and all the supporting cast. The music I'd known and loved long before I was even aware of the film. What more to say but thank you Harold and Maude for making "your world mine".
This is one of the best movies ever made. Its happy, sad, loving, thought provoking. the music is perfect. It makes me laugh and cry every time I watch it.
What memories...thank you sooo much ....everyone should watch Harold & Maude....for inspiration.....and listen to Cat Stevens..... for vocals.....woo hoo x
AH! So it it! I always think of Altman first when it comes to Bud Cort, {MASH, Brewster McCloud, and I thought he was in Nashville, but I guess I was wrong there too!}.
Harold & Maude is the best example I can think of for "the sum of the whole" being much greater than than the sum of it's parts. The combination of script, acting, directing and music is truly heady indeed. This is the perfect tribute to an amazing film. Well done.
I agree, but I've also formed an opinion on it being a battle over life and death and the the sum of the two together is actually the only true happiness. One person living for death and the other for life creates a perfect couple in harmony and without the two even "life" is miserable. Like asking: If you knew tomorrow you would be dead, what would you be doing today?
This is one of the 5 songs on Earth that make me cry, it sums up so many lives that are so desperate and just crying out for help.. Amazing movie by the way, best love story ever.
OMG as a film major this movie depresses me cus how the hell can i create something so perfect and beautiful that is so compleate in its message and style. It is a god damn masterpeice!
This movie was life altering for me I was changed by its message of living life and not being afraid, I also had the distinct pleasure of meeting "Maude" at a Broadway show in the lobby she was just like her character in this movie- a joyous woman- she was kind to everyone no pretensions about her ,it was quite a thrill
Grew up in the Bay Area and saw this in 79'. Recognized so many places in the film to the point that when I drove by them all I could see was the H and M. One of the best films ever. Really chokes me up.
Graytart, Laffin, I can hear Harold's mother's voice right now, saying that. Ya gotta admit, she handles his little "eccentricities" a lot better than I would. Like I said, i love everyone in this movie, but I have a soft spot for dear old mom in this movie. When she fills out his dating survey I laugh till I cry every time I watch it. She's just so cultured, and calm and collected, it's hysterical. Even though I love Maude the most, I'd love to meet the mom in real life. :)
Probably the most beautiful movie ever. My family doesn't believe in funerals. I hope when I go, my kid rents a theatre and shows this movie free to whoever wants to wander in. What a fantastic commentary on life, death, and love.
This is my all time favorite movie. It transcends generations, as it's also my son's fav movie. I've probably watched it like a million times, and the song trouble just blew my mind the first time I heard it. Cat is a beautiful man with a beautiful voice, and an incredible spirit. I love everyone in Harold and Maude, including the Mother. She's hysterical. But Maude is the kind of spirit that lives on forever. I wish there were more movies that say so much in such an effortless way.
Wow thanks. Nice work. I saw this when it came to the theatre where I worked in Houston, TX when I was 17. Loved it and still do. Great combination of actors for this ageless love story:)
Perfect 70's movie - perfect 70's soundtrack. This is one that played in the old theaters at midnight around the country in the 80's. Great, great movie - great, great singer (who is still making music, by the way).
Although I'm not a fan of Cat Stevens the music is the perfect backdrop to one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, told with a superb script and brilliant actors (Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon).
Probably my most favorite movie. YOU MUST SEE this one, so go rent, buy it (DVD), or borrow it from someone who's got a copy and by all means watch it (more than once)... it's fabulous, funny, sad, and very uplifting!
I love Ruth Gordon and I also consider Hal ashby to be a great director. Even if you are indifferent to Cat Stevens Music "Harold & Maude" is a good off-beat film. But if you love Cat Stevens Music as I do, it's icing that and Ice Cream with Wipped Cream on the cake.
The best movie ever. Not least because of the marvellous soundtrack. I've seen it a thousand times and still could watch it every day. A real classic!
Cat Stevens...Believes in peace and love...I so wish we had shown constraint after 9-11 we had so much support at that time. We have now made so many enemies with our vengeance and polocies. Not to mention the thousands dead we have and I imagine hundreds of thousands Iraqis and afganistans. Imagine all the world

Oh, yeah, there was a lot of peace & love under Saddam Hussein and the Taliban, the U.S. totally messed it up.
Although, the Taliban might've been familiar with Cat Stevens since his conversion to Islam, but they probably didn't know any of his songs because music was banned in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The ban on music has been lifted since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan and the Afghanis elected a government after years of brutal and oppressive Taliban dictatorship.
Some one PLEASE post the skit that Harold and Maude do for Uncle Victor. The one on the beach where Harold fakes doing away with Maude as she falls through the boardwalk at the beach.
Most of the songs from this movie can be found on Cat's album, Mona Bone Jakon and is readily avaiable on CD, should not be too hard to find... Also, if you enjoy Bud's work then check out his previous work with Altman on MASH and Brewster McCloud.
my girlfriend didn't get it at all. so i left her. no shit.

I couldn't have said it better. I didn't like Cat Stevens very much at first, but now when I hear his music, I think of Harold and Maude.

Watched it last night! ...You're right, one probably needs to watch it more then once:)
Thanks, by the way!

In a couple of shots (particularly the one where he's lying down with his eyes closed, hands behind his head) he looks remarkably like Frankie Muniz.

I like Cat Stevens, the musician, but not Yusuf Islam, the bigot.
theforeigner85 3 years ago
Bigot?
Hereforthesnacktable 3 years ago
Yes. Are you asking the definition of the word, or for me to explain why I think he's now a bigot since his conversion to Islam? Ask Salman Rushdie.

Excellent film and song.
