Just answered my own question. Anyone else who is wondering - Wiki entry called: Snap-dragon: Look for - Snap-dragon_(game) .
It's a game where the object is to snatch raisins from brandy that's been set on fire. The chant is said while trying to 'rescue' the raisins. According to Wiki it's played in England, Canada, US and maybe Scotland.
Currants, candied fruit, figs, grapes, and plums also used.
Thank you for posting this. I've never seen it and am enjoying it.
Question for anyone who may know: - What is it the boys and girls are chanting as they sit around the table with something they seem to pick at as they say ".. something something something SNIP SNAP DRAGON!"? Something that's traditional or just made up for this story?
All the other stuff - bob for apples, dress up, etc. are done in the US also. The chant is not so I'm wondering what it is.
I enjoy them but do you notice the swearing is out of place in the last few. Reminds me of those dreadful Anglo American TV films of the last century.
Oooooh *shudders* I haven't read this one and it seems really creepy so far. And brilliantly written. The combined efforts of Christie and Gatiss can't really be anything but Win!
im late, i just checked in and found this one i love it ill keep up i promise i got 7 months of more mysteries to look for on here thank you so much for these its boring without them
@Alishhh4: If you look around YouTube, you can also find the new versions of Three Act Tragedy (under "center stage 3"), The Clocks (under "Tick Tock"), and Pale Horse (under "AGPHI").
OH MY GOD---NEVER SAW THIS I HAVE TO AGREE WITH ROBERTQUENTINCOBB'S COMMENTS IN THAT WE RELY ON YOU IN PROVIDING US WITH OUR USUAL "FIX". I AM SO SO SO SO GRATEFUL TO YOU. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW EXCITED I AM TO SEE THIS ONE. DO YOU ACCEPT MARRIAGE PROPOSALS??
Thank u Ravenhaven14 !! this is so gr8. One thing I really miss is BRITISH MYSTERY especially being a fan of Poirot. I dont get it in this remote part of the world and I yearn for it. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.
Series 1-11 (which includes 'Death on Nile' and '3 Little Pigs' - quite recent episodes) are all in the so called 'complete collection' box set on DVD.
This is wonderful. Even though I am American by parentage and citizenship, I have always felt more connected to Europe than America. Probably because I was a military-baby-born-overseas.
If this was written in the 30s, it must originally have been set in Scotland, because Halloween (Walpurgisnacht) was quite unknown in Southern England then and was much later imported from the USA through the Charlie Brown comic strip and for commercial reasons. All Saints, of course, was known as a religious festival.
@pipesmoker9999 That would explain it. However, the presence of a maid and Poirot's winged collar and bow tie point to a much earlier period. Poirot would seem to have the unchanging durability of that other Belgian detective, Tintin, surprising considering his reluctance to take any exercise.
@Hendrikdevuile Poirot refuses to change with the times as far as his style even in the books. He always dresses like it's the 1920's (his prime I imagine). This story specifically deals with his style. This adaption touches on it later on, when Miss Oliver comments on Poirot's patten leather shoes, but Poirot refused to go casual, always he dressed in style. Even when he was an old man.
@Hendrikdevuile Poirot always wore a winged collar and bow tie, even in the late 70's during his last case Poirot is still dressing like a gentleman of the 1920's. It's one reason I LOVE the character, his style never changes, he always stays true to what he enjoys. In one of the earlier novels Poirot says something like "When high collars fall so will civilization Hastings! Do not forget that!" And true to the ultimate egoist Poirot never gave up his style no matter what the world thought.
Does anyone know what stories are left? I think Curtain is the last where Poirot dies. I wish AC or whoever is concerned about copyright would stop and realize that I watch these on youtube and run out and buy the CD. I just purchased the classic collection - I am not sure about the order. This is the classic collection 5 - and it has the earliest Poirot episodes from the late 80s. Then the recent movie collection has Murder on the Orient Express, but nothing about Death on the Nile?
@millbankdb I think the ones left are Dead Man's Folly, Curtain, Elephants Can Remember, the short stories of The Labours of Hercules and I think that's all... Death on the Nile has already been adapted with Suchet as Poirot in the 9th season.
Thank you for the info. I now have all the movie and classic collection dvd. There are just some that are old that I haven't seen or heard of coming to dvd. I wish I could get ' Death on the Nile' and the other I haven't heard of being release on dvd is 'Three Little Pigs'. I understand that there are some AE dvd's, but I understand AE cuts out a lot of time out of the story. I don't know what I am going to do once the stories end. I just hope they don't stop like Cadfael
Thank you thank you. Keep it coming please....don't mention the actor or writer names and try to "hide" the title or else youtube will delete it! Do you have Miss Marple the Joan Hickson's ones. Not the newer version. I love Joan..miss her
@colorpurpleblue Joan was dear late great grandmother :) im so glad to see a fellow hickson lover, somehow the new agatha christie's marple just doesn't cut it somehow aha :D completely impartial ofc ;)

A chant is spoken.
I'm not familiar with this in the US.
