  • As a psychology major I really kind of enjoy this video... Next year (I think) is when I will begin with my research for my major. Several times I have thought about doing something with the internet, or YouTube specifically. Did you ever post anything about your 2nd study that you mentioned? If you did, I would love to read/watch it. You are super awesome :D

  • @olsonche13 Thank you! Unfortunately, I never ended up posting anything about my second study. I presented it immediately before graduating from college and then moved to Rhode Island which took over 48 hours of driving back and forth to do, so I didn't make a video about it. And now I don't have the poster anymore and I'm not sure where the summarized version of that paper went.

  • @olsonche13 Maybe I'll revisit it and try to put something together though. :) I'm glad that you're interested! It was basically about youtube collab channels and how actually seeing and hearing someone interact with you, even when it's not in real time, makes that medium of getting to know someone really awesome. A lot of people, when they finally met their collab-mates in person, felt as if they'd been around them for years even though their only interactions had been online + through videos.

  • @devilishlypure Yeah :) That would be cool! I think it is pretty awesome how youtube allows people to get to know each other like that.

  • You made a comment about people liking you "in spite" of being awkward and a giant dork. I'd have to change that "in spite of" to "because of". Yay for YouTube showing people that who they are is awesome! =D

  • I admire you so much, Lauren. <3

  • This is a neat video, Lauren! I am a pyschology major (who was a psych/theatre double major but one had to go and since theatre isn't 'practical'...Sucks to give up the one you love!)

Anyway-- your presentation was neat. I am doing my senior applied project in April and was thinking about doing something similar-- I think I have some ideas now, thanks!

  • Totally just read the abbreviated version of your paper. Nicely done!

  • Oh you got me interested in psychology again! And I love how easy you are to listen too! And you're really pretty!!!

  • What a great video! I have a masters in Psychology and it's really interesting to think about the changes and trends in research with regards to technology/social networking. This is totally something I would have chosen to research. Great job!

  • This was really interesting.

    Thank you :)

  • This is awesome :D

  • Lauren this is fantastic! I'm a Psych major at my college, and it was really awesome to see this!

  • I really love this! I'm hoping to major in Psychology and I really love your studies on YouTube!

  • To put your presentation up to Youtube was an amazing idea! It suits the project so well. x)

I found this so awesome that you are taking interest in that particular aspect of Youtube, and that you are taking things further by doing a whole report/presentation thing!

There is so much more to Youtube than videos about cats! Youtube belongs to Nerdfighters.

  • I love your hair, just had to be random!

  • I see. I'm sorry your parents didn't allow you to do music in college. I hope you did found Psychology satisfying enough. Keep up the good work. I love your video's. (:

  • I'm a little confused. Are you a Psychology major? Are you doing a Research Master in Psychology? I thought you did a study that was music-related... I'm a Psychology major, I love study and I'd like to do a master in Research. (:

Can I read the article somewhere?

  • @Plottoberry I have a bachelor's in Psychology, and did two research projects on YouTube for my senior thesis. My parents wouldn't let me do music in college.

You can read an abbreviated version of the article through the link in the video description!

  • @devilishlypure I see. I'm sorry your parents didn't allow you to do music in college. I hope you did found Psychology satisfying enough. Keep up the good work. I love your video's. (:

  • This is so interesting!! Great job, Lauren!

    PS Happy Birthday!

  • I can kind of see the purple in your hair in this video.

  • I love how your board has sooooo much text when it focuses on video interaction. Where's dem pictures you talk about?? You're so cute and full of energy and passion that it balances. I like the study, just 1 word: tripod. Keep it up, cheers!

  • @iBleedAdventure Did I talk about pictures? There were a few figures, which I showed in the video.

  • @devilishlypure Good job! Though, as some who has presented at numerous science conferences, included Cog Sci 2009, iBleedAdventure is giving you a good suggestion. A poster should not be the pages of an academic paper pasted next to each other. You are more likely to get the walking by academics if you make it easy on them. Less words. Anywho, keep at it.

  • @NowNow25 Yeah, I spent the first half of the semester writing a ridiculously long paper, way longer than required because I got super into it, and the second half of the semester destroying it so it was small enough to fit on the poster. The original paper was probably long enough to wallpaper that room if all I did was paste the original pages next to each other. I did have a lot of people stopping and looking at the poster, and I abbreviated verbally even further for them. Thanks though! :)

  • Great Video Lauren! I love mixing academics & social media - I think its a supercool area of study.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • dr roy making his youtube debut!!

  • This is so cool to see <3 Thank you for showing and explaining :D

Do you still need people for the collab channel thing? :)

  • Awesome! Your study sounds really, really interesting. I did mine about a year ago... were your results statistically significant? How big was your participant pool, etc??? Yay for Psych majors :)

  • @thequietchannel The details of the whole project are in the sidebar. The correlation I was talking about between people who admitted a change in portrayal being most likely to experience a positive change was significant.

  • @devilishlypure That's really awesome! I was super excited to see a psych conference poster on youtube! I hope you continue to do research in this area even when your experimental course is done. Too bad there's not enough information out there for a lit review. Good luck on writing your paper if you still have that to do!

  • This is why you should be able to forego your next five (four?) Favorites in order to assign a video deserving 5 x Favorite status.

There is so much Meta in this video, it's mind blowing!

  • Good job, Lauren! That's really cool. Love you!

  • Thank you for sharing this. It is really interesting. I'm happy to hear that you are just as smart and funny and sweet off camera as you are on camera. You're awesome.

  • great job on your presentation. i'm glad youtube has changed you into the person you've always wanted to be. i still remember listening to your moaning myrtles videos when you just started out : ]

  • This is brilliant. :)

  • So cool! :D Good job!!

  • You are just SO freaking beautiful and sweet and smart. I love this.

  • Awesome presentation... I feel like I learned a lot and wasn't even there!

  • Awesome vid. Thanks for reducing world suck by being you.

  • this was so awesome! all of that stuff that you said about youtube and confidence made a lot of sense. :)

  • Lauren <3

  • This is awesome! I actually did a similar report for my Social Psychology course this semester! I focused mine on social influence and the impact youtube has on conformity and such :)

  • That is such a cool research project idea! I did totally boring research in all of my classes. Jealous.

  • As a fellow psychology major, I found this interesting. Are you sending your research to any professional journals? I'd be interested in reading the full paper.

  • We like that you are awkward and a dork cause it is who you are

  • hey lauren, you're awesome

  • i never realized that your hair was that amazing. or that your are that pretty. i knew you were georgous and your hair was pretty but i mean you could be a modle!

  • Also, I'm a fan of the fact that your pink splotches were under the "Abstract" section. The Universe was conspiring for you right there. :D

  • Thanks for making psychology interesting for us too! I'm looking forward to hearing about your next project. :)

  • XD Are you majoring in Psychology?? I just changed my major to Psychology, and it made me super excited to see the title of the video. I'm just curious. :) You did a great job explaining everything. I hope everything turns out well for ya. XD

  • This is such an interesting project, Lauren! I love this as a research study and a poster presentation! :D It's something that deserves a lot more attention than it's currently getting. Nice work!

    ~Kiera

  • I found this very interesting! I feel like I'm "confronted" to the youtube phenomenon daily as I watch videos every day :P but I never actually think of the "mechanisms" or psychology behind it all...

    Great video!

  • Lauren, I think that this is an awesome project and I commend you for doing it. I would love to read an article or something by you about this topic because it is really interesting.

Congratulations on coming into yourself through Youtube. Keep being you

    -Ethan

  • I think that's a fantastic study actually :]. People always put the internet in a bad light, saying it's decreasing real life communication between people (especially teens). But it truly can be beneficial in certain ways.

  • That was super interesting! I'd been wondering about this ever since you talked about your project the first time. Thanks for sharing it with us! I really hope you tell us about the Collab research, too :)

  • I absolutely love this!

  • That was an extremely interesting project. And you're so cute! And I love your hair!

  • Very entertaining and informational video Lauren!!! xD I'd love to hear more, you should post an un-edited/less edited version! Either way, great job!

PS: Did you get a good grade on your report?

  • This was really interesting to watch! I love psychology and am thinking about taking it in college, so this was a really cool video. You are a fantastically awesome person on camera, so I just assume you are just as awesome in real life which makes me so beyond excited to meet you when you come to St. Louis this summer!

    Keep being awesome :D

  • lauren you look super adorable in this video! go you!

  • nice vid...u almost done with school? psych ur major?

  • I really liked this video. The best college projects are ones that you do about something you truly love or are interested in. I don't vlog myself because of my job, but I'm glad to know that it has such a positive effect on people who do vlog. Great job! : D

  • I was going to ask if we can see the details of this, and then I stopped being retarded and looked at the sidebar. I look forward to reading more about it. Also, I have to say, your smile is quite contagious. This video is, without a doubt, why today is awesome (yes, I know it's the wrong channel for that, and I don't care). :D

  • What a great and interesting project. Thanks for sharing!

  • Very awesome. I always want to do papers and things on social interaction over the internet, but its so incredibly difficult because there's never any peer-reviewed journal articles on it. And if there is, its about "How Facebook is ruining face-to-face communication" or "Cyberbullying" (Usually about kids bullying people they know from school, not random trolls, which would be much more interesting. Someone needs to do a study on why people troll). And that's just not what I'm interested in.

  • Lauren, I thought this was super cool and fascinating! What an awesome thing to do a project on and what a positive result you got from it! Well done!

  • I am a Vidder, My face is never on YouTube, but my work is. And I get simaler comments that make it feel like I'm doing good with my vids. And pushes me to improve and make more. It's also bulding my confadence within the work force. I used to be nervious about walking into a bulding and hoping someone sees though my young age and acctually looks at my Resume. Now I don't really worry as much.

  • DAMN! How long did it take you to do all that research? It was really good, by the way! I love it! <3

  • You seem so happy. How cute ^_^

  • This is a fantastic presentation, and it is actually really inspiring. I think I will get back into vlogging. I was getting really into it, but then one that got 75,000 views got taken down because I didn't realise that using a little clip of music would get me ass-whooped by copyright people. You are such an inspiration, and I am very impressed indeed. I wish I could combine my degree with Youtube. I also wish I could be a proper bonefide "Youtuber" like you.

  • To be honest, I always wondered when someone would do a psych study on YouTubers and estimate their awesomeness... I'm glad you turned it into a video, that was quite possibly the most interesting thing I've seen/heard in a goodly while.

And you're DEFINITELY awesome, Lauren. One of my favorite vloggers / musicians, and now, psychologists. :D

Way to be legit amazing. <3

And way to be a really awesome nerd. For real. Ridiculously cool. :]

  • I recently wrote an extremly long paper on YouTube and Social Anxiety. I agree with a lot of what you said. It's easy to write a paper about something you know very well. =]

  • "Hey, you know, I can be really awesome despite the fact that I am really awkward and a dork."

This statement completely describes my feelings after discovering Nerdfighteria. I love this video so, so much Lauren!

  • @MAJESTIcag7 We are real people, you know. And why would I let you see my wedding video?

  • this video makes me want to vlog. i've had my channel for years now, but i've never actually uploaded anything to it cuz i didn't know what to say or do for a video. but maybe i'll give it a try :-)

  • Hmmm....I've followed thru, and perused your summation. Although I'll differ with your conclusions, I'll applaud your enthusiasm (and your high-energy). People have a tendency to sugar-coat this website sometimes....while others villify it. I try to stay clear of the personality-driven aspects of the site....and prefer the music content (which I consider unrivaled on the 'net). Good luck in your educational pursuits....and thanks for the video.

  • That's some pretty awesome stuff there! And you made it super interesting too. :D

  • Really interesting Lauren!!!

  • Awesome! Also meta, with the whole posting about it on YouTube. Very cool.

  • If you want more views, put more cats in your video. ; )

Very interesting, glad you posted that.

  • Lauren! Wow! You're project is absolutely fascinating to me. Sooner or later I'm going to have to do a paper or project on youtube, because it seems like you had a great time researching and writing your report. Btw, your presentation is fabulous! Pink spots included!

  • This is awesome! I <3 you Lauren! :D

  • that is a really cool experiment!

  • I thought this project was really cool! I think it's awesome that you're explaining that youtube is more than just cat videos or accidents. I think you're super awesome Lauren :D

Can't wait to meet you on the summer tour! :D

  • "make"? youtube "makes" you more awesome? i'm pretty sure you're making a causal link here when this is just corollary research... right? not that i don't believe it's possible, but there are some significant third variables you're not addressing..

  • @moopsycho Did I say that YouTube makes you more awesome? I'm sorry if I did, because that's not what my research was about. There also was only one correlation; that a significant amount of the people who noted changes in their portrayal also experienced positive changes in their lives as a result of YouTube.

I asked open-ended questions and the participants told me that YouTube made them feel more confident as a result of their posting video blogs. They made the causal link, not me.

  • Such a cool presentation, Lauren! Way to go! :D

  • You are the most beautiful nerd in the world. :D

  • @thewhompingwillows Squeeeee. =D

  • @thewhompingwillows Yea I'd like her to "calculate" me ahahha hahaha ah... That's a very thorough profound research though- I can tell most of it is accurate and true!

  • @WLuico Well, she's my fiancee so I guess you're SOL, buddy. :)

  • @thewhompingwillows that's uh random to know..? I never said anything "claiming" her rather enter an attempt of a complimentary joke thus making you a bit intimidated, period. What does SOL mean..? Oh and I'd still like her to "calculate" me even knowing that random thing you gave me, truth or not- it's basically all irrelevant because this is the internet.

Unless if info is met by relevant standards then we got ourselves another story..

  • @WLuico SOL = shit out of luck. Yes, @thewhompingwillows is my fiance.

  • @WLuico I'm sure Lauren felt very complimented by your creepy comment!

  • @thewhompingwillows you're creeping me out too!

  • Have you dyed your hair purple, Lauren?

Either way, your hair is such a pretty color!

I love your presentation idea, it's so cool!

  • thats really interesting!

  • This was awesome! YouTube vloggers FTW!

  • This video is awesome. I love the information. *is a nerd*

  • Lauren this is awesome!!! it looks like you put in a lot of hard work and that you had a lot of fun presenting, so congratulations!!!! the info is really interesting too. i can't wait to hear about your collab research too.

  • This is a really really intresting subject :O :D

  • This is so interesting Lauren. You're the pioneer on youtube research! How COOL is that?! Don't let the horrible comments affect you because you wouldn't wanna be their friends anyway so just stick with the thousands of people who think you're awesome!

  • this is really interesting Lauren! wow! i should be vlogging to gain self confidence!

  • the more open a network the more likly a system is to be abused. YouTube is an example of the definition of the efos of the internet.

    your freaking awesome Lauren

  • This is really interesting!! And you look really pretty, Lauren. Your hair is so cool! Is that purple I see in it? It's very nice. : )

  • I definitely want to hear about your collaboration studies [=

I definitely think I've become more confident since I started vlogging for my collab channel. And I don't really do anything more for my videos than I do from day to day look wise. Plus, the other people you meet through stuff like this are awesome.

  • This was awesome, Lauren! Great job applying science to YouTube, we need more people to do that so that more people can appreciate how great it is. Your results are good to hear too, because (and I know this is slightly different) even as someone who just views and comments, I've noticed a big change in myself since I started really getting into YouTube. There are so many amazing people and ideas and inspirations to appreciate and learn from!

  • This is great!

  • That is amazing. You win YouTube.

  • I paused this video at the first second to let it load since I was listening to a song at the song, and the face that Lauren is making at the one-second mark is priceless.

After I had my fill of that one-second mark, I went on to watch the rest of the video, and I must say I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's really really cool to see this concept taken to this extent. I'm really interested in YouTube as a whole, and it was very cool to see it studied.

  • This is great! I love how people can study Youtube from a psychology, sociology, anthropology pov.

  • this is so ligit, good job! :D

  • Wow, way interesting stuff. Your poster and presentation were very professional and well done too. Great job! :)

  • you sound really clever!!!

  • This was fun, great job! :)

  • This is SO AWESOME! I love that you've found ways to combine your "online" life with "real" life. :) Also, I just wanted to say that some of the mean things people have said to you on YouTube completely blow my mind. From what I've seen, you are completely gorgeous, inside and out! Wrock on, Lauren.

  • the pink splotches add PIZZAZZ!

  • no, thank *you* for making psychology interesting for *me* for the first time ever...

also, you look nice today (/whenever you filmed this) lauren!

  • This is great. I'm so glad you posted it. I'd definitely like to hear more when you finish your current project. Off to read your paper. Thanks for linking it.

  • I think you're cute :)

  • Wow. This is really interesting! Thanks for sharing this with us Lauren!

  • i love this! its perfect and sooo true! great job and keep up the great work!

  • I love your presentation! What a great topic.

  • ... growing more certain in my wish to vlog,,,now to convince my parents...

and so glad I'm taking AP Psychology next year!

  • YAY! Psychology! I would adore actually reading the paper.. *is a Psych geek* :)

  • 1. You're SOO beautiful. You have PURPLE in your hair! :O <3

    2. This is really really interesting. It sounds like it must have been fun to research and explain to people. Aggravating if people didn't understand though.

    3. Thanks for posting this. I liked hearing about it. :D

  • Awesome project! I would love to see the results of your study on colab channels. It sounds really cool!

  • This was actually really fascinating. Great study!

  • This is really awesome! Congrats!

  • That was so interesting! I love that we're now an actual, observable, Thing and not just a blob of people who are seen as spending too much time on the internet. Awesome job!

  • You rock!

  • Wow this is a really cool project! It's awesome Lauren!

  • you always look so happy =] cheers me up every time

  • Love it! I've been to a few poster sessions just like that one, it was a little weird seeing such a real-life experience that I am used to here on YouTube! I think your research is so novel and interesting and relevant!

  • This was really good. I think that it's interesting how subconsciously things like YouTube make us more confident and outgoing. When I found YouTube, I was an awkward, lonely child, but then something about it just made me comfortable with myself, and I made a bunch of friends and came out of my shell a lot. Thanks, Lauren. <3

  • cool vid!

  • You are super awesome, Lauren. Way to get really creative and incorporate your personal and academic interests! Can't wait to see the result of your second study.

  • Nice job! I like that you've taken something that has become such a big part of your life and related it to your academics. And the topic is a valid one in today's society. Well done, Lauren!

  • I love it! :D

  • I remember when you were mad when you went to the salon and they dyed your hair black instead of purple!! You finally got some color it it!! It looks beautiful!! :D Awesome presentation!!

  • This is pretty interesting. And I love psychology!

  • youtube made me SO much more confident

  • I always love how almost all the time you look super happy. please know that this fact makes me feel happier too in my own little life.

btw congrats with the engagement. all the best to you and matt. =]

  • Wow, that is such an interesting project, and you seemed to find tangible results, which is awesome!

  • This is not only very true, but extremely interesting, too!

  • i wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the basis for future youtube and other internet social network studies.

    excellent work!

    (i feel like a teacher now... ;)

  • Your project was really interesting. I can tell that you put a lot of time into it.

    Great job Lauren! :D

  • That was really interesting, looking forward to the results on social interactions through colab channels. Also, it's nice to see you smiling and upbeat about what you're doing in college =]

  • You look so awesome<3 I love your hair:)

  • Really nice job, Lauren!

  • Awesome job Lauren!

It looks like it took a lot of time and effort but you seem to really know your stuff and the poster looked awesome!

Congrats on almost being done college btw!! =D

  • Great job! I was a research psych major and I would have loved to do such an interesting study. This makes me want to make more videos :D lol

  • This is really interesting. Thanks for posting it! :)

  • Wow that paper sounds realy interesting! :) It was a really good idea, you did a great job! I have been subscribing and commenting on people's videos for a while now, and I feel that Youtube has changed me even though I don't vlog (though sometimes I 'm really tempted to!). I think what is happening on Youtube in unique and revolutionary, and I'm really glad that it has given me the chance to 'meet' certain people....you guys have basically restored my faith that truly awesome people exist! :)

  • PS: I thought your hair looked great in this video too! :)

  • Awesome project. Good job! :]

  • Oh, Lauren, this is amazing.

  • This is awesome Lauren!

  • @whataboutadam Thanks, Adam! :D

  • Awesome job ^.^

  • awesome : )

    i love youuu

  • this was really awesome. good job! I hope you got/get a really good grade! best wishes!

  • This made me smile! It's really interesting, thinking about how social networks change one's identity. I haven't experienced much of that so far myself (blogging doesn't count, I think) but I think it's a really fascinating subject! Great work, Lauren :D

  • I actually find I'm a lot MORE inhibited in my videos. I'm actually really nuts and weird and bubbly and sideways, but that doesn't come out in my videos. I'm working on it. ;)

  • I loved this. What an amazing project.

  • Realy interesting paper that you did. I could not stop smiling the whole video, becous it was so good :)

  • that was interesting! =]
