This was truly the greatest moment in USA Hockey history. But I'm sad because every time I think of this game, I'm going to think of the 2010 gold medal game. I'll never be able to root for the Penguins again. What's worse is that before the gold medal game, the Canadians flipped out that they lost to the USA, but after they won in OVERTIME in the gold medal game, they start saying bs like the first game was like spring training or preseason. Hypocritical assholes. Next Olympics is ours.
In exhibitions that year, Soviet club teams had gone 5 - 3 - 1 against National Hockey League (NHL) teams, and a year earlier the Soviet national team had routed the NHL All-Stars 6 - 0 to win the Challenge Cup.
Thats like a bunch of college basketball players beating a team that had just routed Lebron, Kobe, Wade etc.
The Russian team was basically a pro team. They were together for years. They beat the US team, which was all college players 10 - 3 a couple weeks before in an exhibition game. The Russian team crushed the NHL All-Stars in an exhibition game.
do you even know the story? the russian all-stars who have played together for about 15 years getting upset by a bunch of college kids. like the temple owls beating the all stars from the nfl...
because, russia was communist back them and they had been training for years, and they had won the past like 6 olympics..... and the us was just..... there.... no one thought that we'd beat them
Just visited the rink in Lake Placid last week, something I'd wanted to do for nearly 30 years. I was beaming the entire time I was inside the building. If I had a time machine, the first two places I'd go would be a Beatles concert at the Cavern Club, and Lake Placid on Feb. 22, 1980.
Every single sporting event ever played by the Soviet Union had political undertones, the 1980 more so than any other.
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, The US boycotted the 1980 summer olympics in Moscow, etc.
To put this game in its proper context, you cannot discuss it without mentioning politics, nor can you mention the Soviet hockey team without noting the fact that they were all soldiers in the Soviet Army.
My reply was meant to undermine your reliance on statistics. The outcome of sporting events cannot be reduced to mere mathematical formulas. The Russians may have been the better team (statistically), but the US had more intangibles (heart, will, determination). They lost.
Would have been so much better without the music. The whole point of it was to hear the commentators and the crowd. No to hear thrash trash. Game misconduct for you I'm afraid.
Antanas, you won't get much support on this page, but I think Americans recognize that the Soviets were best. But not that night in 1980! Even the US coach said that if they played 10 times, the Soviets would win 9 games. The reason for so much pride over this victory is that using heart and desire, our team beat the superior team. That is why we call it the Miracle on Ice. Imagine Russian farmers beating Arsenal for gold in soccer. You would be proud, too.
Statistics and power ment nothing in this game, sure they could have been really good, but that still doesn't change the fact that they lost to college kids.
I wish I would have been alive to witness this. Greatest moment in US sports ever period. I'm from Minnesota so it is even more incredible to have Herb Brooks as coach!!! USA USA USA!!!!!!
Why do you keep talking about the "command" and how "remarkable" the USSR was. I mean come on dude, in all of your comments. And if it was so "remarkable" then why did it collapse?
FUCK YES!!!! So perfect you expect it to be fiction!!!! One of my fave parts of the movie was when the player asks the coach "you want me to take the test? , Ill take the damn test!" and he replies "no I wanna see the kid who refused to take it out there in the net" or something like that. If you dont know what I mean just see the movie it kicks ass!!!!
I remember being glued to the TV watching the tape delay broadcast that night - still not knowing who had won. You know, the more I see the replay, the more I appreciate the first US goal by Buzz Schneider; you see where he launches that shot from?
But remember folks lovely ABC tape delyed it so when we heard final i know i was at a hawks basketball game crowd stop game for 3 mins with shouts of Usa Usa...i did to i got see final endin on delay thanks to local stations act
Greatest Olympic moment ever-- we FINALLY got the c*mmie ba$tards back for that ridiculously rigged '72 basketball final where the "officials" wouldn't rest until we had "lost", granting about a half dozen "do-overs" until achieving their desired result. Hope these guys had fun in the gulag after they got home.
I was 14 years old and I remember like yesterday. Years ago Krutov play for the ZSC Lions in Zurich Switzerland. We was proud to have a player of this Match in our team.
hell yeah : -)

@oasisnole best I heard the upset described was by Jim McKay, the late ABC broadcaster who said, "
IT WAS LIKE A BUNCH OF COLLEGE KIDS KNOCKING OFF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS". Happy Anniversary Miracle Team !!!

Lies, damn lies, and statistics.
Here's a statistic: the USSR lasted 69 years and is now defunct. Communism has not, will not, nor will it ever work.
Here's another statistic: over 100 million people killed by communist regimes. See point above.
Here's yet another statistic: the USSR lost this game 4-3.
