The U.S. Tech industry has continually lied to congress regarding the need for H-1B, as interest in Science and Technical fields was actually skyrocketing among American university students when H-1B was created.

the law of supply and demand dictates that every American citizen who walks with a masters in Network Engineering who cannot find a job other than pouring coffee for 9 bucks an hour will discourage others from going for technical degrees. The "MBA" crowd somewhere along the line convinced the American workforce that Americans were all overpaid, lazy and unproductive, and thus outsourcing was justified.

If you read Hira's work, the biggest users of H1Bs are the Indian outsourcing companies and those people coming from India have no more than a BS - some only a trade school certificate. H1B reform generally centers on forcing the payment of a prevailing wage and upping the qualifications of H1Bs coming in to be people who have proven them selfs to be "rare workers" NOT grunts doing routine work which is currently the case.

When I graduated from one of the most coveted colleges in India (a 0.5% acceptance rate), there were people around who were offered analyst jobs at top brokerage firms in Mumbai. And yet, I came to the US to earn $15k and enrolled in a math PhD. Use your brain: $15k... a pizza guy makes more! You think an analyst with a top brokerage firm in Mumbai lives below the standard of a US pizza boy?

Having an easy biology PhD not only saves professors grant money (professors need grant money to survive, because the univ pays even a prof a rock bottom salary and demands that it be supplemented thro grants) but also creates more postdocs. And then, the people in science usually hire the best ones out there...the ones most ready to work hard. If Americans dont want to work hard, they have no future in science. Science doesn't work like CNN... or racism.

The professors had to do that, because the greedy university takes $35K OUT of the grant money that the professor earns from NIH for a PhD students "tuition". That is why a professor needs postdocs to survive, because you can just pay a postdoc $35k. And Lou, science has this culture of not branding things as "American science" or "Chinese science", its just science. Its a progressive thing...you wont understand.

I totally agree with baymarks comments. I would like to mention that many of the H1b postdocs have received their PhD's from top US universities and only a percentage of the postdocs have PhD's oversees. The postdocs whether American citizens or h1b visa holders all receive the same wage. There is no discrimination there. Most postdocs after a year or two take up a job as a scientist or an assistant professor and their salaries are way above an average American wage.

The info on post-docs salaries is misleading. Post-docs are an extension of graduate school - they are OPTIONAL short-term positions (1 or 2 years) people generally take to be more competitive for university faculty research positions. The salaries of post-docs are meaningless. The real questions are about salaries once you enter the workforce (after the post-doc) and number of jobs available. This kind of careless reporting is just discouraging young people from pursuing jobs in science.
