The Tele is a peeeerfect instrument for blues-so raw, rich in harmonics, with tones that sparkle when clean, and snarl like an angry panther when dirty.
The guy is a great guitar player but for the blues the Tele just doesn't have that blues sound if you know what I mean. It's too raspy and tinty to me, just my opinion. I would rather use a Les Paul, or a Strat, or an ES 335. The Tele is great for country pickin'
@fuzzycuddles He was named "The best guitarist that you've never heard of" By guitar magazine I believe. I wouldnt argue if they wouldve name him the best guitar player that ever lived.

Brent Mason Eh. Ill have a look ta. But i think Mr Gattons some boy. One of those blokes that doesnt even need to look to put his fingers exacty where they should be. Seems to mix blues, jazz, country with embarasing ease. Nice wrist watch as well!
Actually in an interview he said he almost never looks at the crowd unless he gets distracted by something but hes always concentrating on what he's doing on guitar. but a great player.
Just found this bloke on You tube. Had never heard of him before but boy i wont forget his name now. Fantastic & very unique & original style. Just got a telecaster but am embarassed to pick it up now. You think your not to bad then see the likes of Danny Gaton & then i realise im shite! Back to the drawing board
indeed dude...try listening brent mason, you'll have the same feeling or worst LOL, i bought my tele few months ago and when i see those guys playing i just think ´´i'll never know how to play this guitar like them´´
Gatton was an example of a player who was just Damm Good without all the freakin hype. Just call him the mail man--he could deliver the goods. A true musicians musician. Very, very few players in that category.
Gatton cocky?, i think it was more like the old horn player was annoying and the only guy Danny probably felt comfortable with was the red haird rythm player.
Danny COCKY?!? No freaking way.... he would always take a minute to talk with me at his gigs even though I was an absolute nobody to him... nice and cordial like.... nothing cocky about him.... He concentrated like crazy while he was playing (no surprise) and might not be into the audience as much as some players, but that wasn't cockiness... that was him paying attention to what was being played.... yer wrong there my friend... NOT cocky... nice guy....
I hope somebody has posted his appearance on Austin City Limits. At the end, he does this thing with a full bottle of beer and a towel that is both jaw dropping and a riot.
Gatton was a session player in Nashville, jazz, blues, country. He was the most amazing player. Get 88 Elmira Street, or Cruisin Deuces if you want to hear him full throttle. Sad he's gone.
Yes, and he owned a club there. He played a show that night before he shot himself. But, he was a session cat, and well known in the Nashville circuit.
Notwaiting, Thats true most of music is derived from the blues.I was talking about gmr366 comment about blues played on a tele . Really? I thought we were talking about American pop, country, jazz, rock-n-roll etc. here, to which these genres all originated from, believe it or not.
I'm not used to seeing the blues played on a tele..seems to me the player is usually on a stratocaster..or some other model of guitar. But then I guess it really doesn't matter when you have the kinda talent this guy has.
didn't eric clapton proclaim him "world's greatest unknown guitarist?" thought that i remember hearing that long ago. also, (anyone from maryland?) didn't he het his start as a guitar tech at venemans's on 355 in rockville? got to see him live only once at the taste of dc, which i beleive came two months before his death. got the honor of standing no more than 10' from him, until my EX wife (let me stress EX) pulled me away to go home.
elletsco, I am from Maryland and saw Danny many times around town. He used to play at a really small venue called the Club Soda. He and I arrived at the same time one night and he let me carry in his amp. He seemed so down to earth. What a loss.
He left us far too early. There will never be another like him. Fine, fine player. So very many voices coming out from his guitar music. You have to know who they all are to truly appreciate what he played. We miss you Danny, but at least we have our memories of you, and the music you left us listening to in our minds. And only God can take that away from us, like he took you from us. Rest easy Buddy. Hopefully some day we'll all meet again.
ghaws Stevie Ray is my all time blues player over Johny Winter but the only people who are in Gattons class are Lenny Breau, and Scotty Anderson, and probably Wes Montgomery. Everyone has there favorites but in the near future I will send out a mind boggling compilation of Gatton solos that once and for all will show people what I've been talking about the last year or so. Gattonmaster/formally mastercollector
GATTON FANS MY PROJECT IS FINISHED!!! GATTONS GREATEST/ULTIMATE SOLOS IS ABOUT 35 MINUTES OF TOTAL DEVESTATION!!! THE MOST AMAZING THING YOU WILL EVER HEAR. I HAVE A PO BOX NOW AND AS SOON AS I BURN ABOUT 50 CD COPIES I WILL POST MY PO ADDRESS. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SEND A BLANK CD IN A YELLOW ENVELOPE WITH POSTAGE TOTALING ABOUT $ 1.75 THATS IT. IF YOU DON'T TRUST ME I'LL LET NILESWEST, NIPPERROONEY, AND JAZZGUITARFREAK HEAR MY CD AND LET THEM TELL YOU!! mastercollector/gattonmaster
This also has Danny's neat modification of the blues progression, with those extra minor chords thrown in. What a cool take on Stormy Monday. He does all that great stuff with his right hand, and you know he doesn't even have to think about it.
I still don't fully understand why Danny Gatton never made it big. He was an honest-to-god virtuoso who felt every note he ever played, and wanted nothing more than to play awesome music for people.
But I guess that's the world of show-business. Sometimes the best just don't make it to the top.
I think one of the contributing factors was that Danny's playing was too hard to classify...was he blues, country, jazz?...all of the above and none of the above. He truly had a singular style.
As far as the best making it to the top, how talented you are has nothing to do with where you are on the charts.
After hearing that awesome playing, what does the interveiwer say? " I love that WRISTWATCH."! What a moron! Guitar playing? Whoosh! Right over his head! No wonder why he's so impressed that Danny "...also created AND wrote (like there's a difference)it" UGHH! limited intellect becomes so much more apparent when it nears greatness
This is an absolute clinic on layers of technique and flawless execution. The number of stylistic techniques Gatton weaves into a blues number is frightening and would leave most guitarists wondering what the hell they just saw.
The Tele is a peeeerfect instrument for blues-so raw, rich in harmonics, with tones that sparkle when clean, and snarl like an angry panther when dirty.

bbrown090852 9 months ago
@bbrown090852 That's what is weird about Gatton....he can't be easily put into a "style". Blues? Country? Jazz?
More like all the above. He couldn't be confined to a "accepted sound" for a style....because he didn't really fit into one style.

I'm not used to seeing the blues played on a tele..seems to me the player is usually on a stratocaster..or some other model of guitar. But then I guess it really doesn't matter when you have the kinda talent this guy has.
A sweet performance. Thanks for posting this.

No Les Paul crowned him World's greatest unknown Gutiarist. Eric Clapton said he would not even attempt to play on the same stage as Danny Gatton

didn't eric clapton proclaim him "world's greatest unknown guitarist?" thought that i remember hearing that long ago. also, (anyone from maryland?) didn't he het his start as a guitar tech at venemans's on 355 in rockville? got to see him live only once at the taste of dc, which i beleive came two months before his death. got the honor of standing no more than 10' from him, until my EX wife (let me stress EX) pulled me away to go home.

normally i would say that over-rated no mark talks a loada shit, but he had it right that time.

elletsco, I am from Maryland and saw Danny many times around town. He used to play at a really small venue called the Club Soda. He and I arrived at the same time one night and he let me carry in his amp. He seemed so down to earth. What a loss.

The only master of the telecaster who can rightfully tributise the great Danny Gatton,
is my dear friend Ariel "Kid Ory 2000" Levy, who plays a Danny Gatton Tele (rare,
"no zircons" model) and a vintage Epiphone Emperor with updated Lindsey Fralin P-90's.
Sincerely,
The Legendary Danny O'Doul

he was a very depressed person, redneck jazz, awesome, telecaster; best american made product ever invented..

Sometimes the best just don't make it to the top.
guestinformant9 3 years ago
I think one of the contributing factors was that Danny's playing was too hard to classify...was he blues, country, jazz?...all of the above and none of the above. He truly had a singular style.
As far as the best making it to the top, how talented you are has nothing to do with where you are on the charts.

I discovered Danny a Month after he died. too bad really. All the best ones are either gone or you haven't heard of yet.
