@tiluthemeguy Anyone CAN escape, you are right. It's not about if the person can escape the actual physical hold, since the only "hold" being applied is from the student himself.
It is about the manipulation of the fundamental need for physical control of our own bodies through exploits of basic psychological and bio-mechanical properties.
The monkey holds on to the food and stays trapped, simple as that.
Applying it with stick work successfully and consistently? An art form of its own...
@TheMrNinjacakes if its psycological [ i mean sequal to marma of indian system or chi flow of chinese kungfu/tai chi ] then thats cool. impressive this person has grown to that on his own. but still there is no way one can be sure of it until personally felt. also no reason to say otherwise.
for me talking like that, the description was not proper.
OMG! I'm just getting back from an intensive oneweek systema session, and loved working with sticks. I however had some problems letting the stick go into my partner's structures. This video just blows my mind!
I think that the backwards twisting of the wrist somehow screws up the proprioceptive system of your body. You can get a sample of this by picking up a hammer (or like object) by grasping it only between your thumb and forefinger with your palm face down. Now, flip your hand over so the palm faces up and the handle of the hammer is vertical and try to let go of the hammer. It's not easy.
The genius in the exercise is not what it looks like physically/on video...It is in the experience this guys nervous system is going through in these different positions. The movement is essentially neuromuscular re-education connecting his brain with the part of his body that does not understand the movement. Essentially expanding the brain to thing outside normal patterned "techniques" and tapping into his body's own innate wisdom...
@CNCTEMATIC When the body is placed into a stance that is un-natural, and then something is moved into a "supportive" position, the subconscious tendency is to not let go of the thing that is keeping you upright, even if that thing (in this example, the stick) is what's also keeping you in the un-natural position.
The lesson to be learned here, if you are in that student's position, is that sometimes self-control is in letting go in your mind first, so you can let go in the physical state.
@CNCTEMATIC In that specific instance, the student is still being placed into position that is a counterpoint to how he would naturally hold the stick.
It may not be about balance as previously described, but the principle is still the same. It feels more "natural" subconsciously to maintain position than potentially place yourself in harm's way, even if it is falsely perceived to be harmful in the first place.
That is the mindset Mikhail exploits by diverting the student's focus to the stick.
@CNCTEMATIC ever just couldn't let go of looking away from something even tho u felt like u should form 4 yrs of exp with this system, this is no gimmick or magic. its only exploitation of what we NATURALY DO IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE; EXAMPLE. ever had a person to faint strike u in the nutsbut nvr touched u, BUT U STILL MOVED ANYWAY ? why dont u just NOT FLINCH
anyone can escape that. its jus a group of people gathered to give credit to that man.

Amazing! Can anyone really achieve this level of mastery? Or does it require some kind of genius or God given abilities?

I don't understand why the student doesn't just let go of the stick when "tied up"? Is it a rule that you can't?

@CNCTEMATIC sometimes people just dont think about it that way

@TheMrNinjacakes Hmm. That doesn't really account for eg the situation at 4:53 - he's not unbalanced, he's pulling a stick into his neck.
