  • what a classic song they dont make them like this anymore you can keep the stuff they make these days

  • Wow love this record, takes me back to very simmilar time in a wonderful summer holiday in the mid 70s,I was younger than 17 and really nervous, but she was really nice. Thanks Sxx.

  • Grooming song.

  • summer the first time i battered section b at broomfield..NGE..

  • Just beautiful

  • Memories, memories...

  • Love this song!

  • beautifull song.can see my mum singing to the radio in the kitchen in the 70 s.happy days

  • CLASSIC

  • She was 38 and I was six and a half. She knew nuthin' bout law, that's why she went to jail....

  • OMG so many memories..beautiful ones..thank you for this

  • @George. Keep in mind that the boy in the song is 17, pretty much not a boy. I think a 30 year old man having sex with a 17 year old girl would be considered inappropriate, but hardly perverted.

  • the key changes are amazing...it lifts you

  • 40 years have gone bye.......since I dreamt of this happening to me. Great song.

  • 30 years have gone bye......

  • Obviously a classic, but also a fabulous arrangement when you actually listen to it. Amazing bass line !

  • LINDA BALADA EN INGLÉS *****

  • i have loved this song since i heard it first when i was 16. but if it was about a man in his 30s who had a relationship with a teenage girl or boy it would be called ''sick and perverted'' which is very sad as love is love.

  • One of the most beautiful records ever.

  • In 2011 this would be called The MILF Song and there would be an explicit interlude from [insert rapper here].

  • this song makes my brain ache... in a good way. rock on thesteiny69

  • rhiann r you listening

  • just love it thesteiny69

i know what u mean and im a bloke lol

  • Wonderful track - reminds me of 3 weeks back in the seventies with some mates on the island of Millport in the west coast of Scotland - we would have been about 15 years old at the time - this track along with Clifford T Ward's 'Gaye' was forever on the juke box in the cafe we hung out in - every time I hear this it take me back to these great days with our whole life ahead of us - sadly a couple of these guys have passed on.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever! Don't think theres any other song that gets you like this does!

  • The best thing Bobby ever did, by far. This is so different from his other stuff--wonderful. Very real. I wonder what his parents thought--"Was it Shirley, our neighbor? Or perhaps Phyllis down the street?"

  • Cougar anthem.

  • This song has been one of my all time favorites. The music is beautifull, the song has so many wonderfull lines. "Her shoulders were bare, I tried not to stare" " The sweat trickled down the front of her gown" They don't write lyrics like this any more, more's the pity

  • this is pure Gold -a classic -love it -i just wish i was the young man.

  • @fastezz So do I :)

It has been my all-time favourite love song of all time. I still get tears today 38 years later.

  • One year has gone by

since I looked in her eye

    but the memory lingers

I go back in my mind

    to the very first time

and the touch of her fingers

    ----to nobody in particular

    must buy some Marmite tomorrow

  • This song was ahead of its time for the subject matter and remains timeless and willbe .... Forever. I can think of only one who writes this type of poetry to music today ... JQ

  • Summer The First Time: Is Of Images Involving A Future Boyfriend. On A Very

Hot/Sticky Day. Riding In A Current Black Ford

Pickup With Black Upholstery. That The

Truck Was Pure Black. As Reflected.

  • unforgetable song. i remenber the film directed by Robert Mulligan in 1971 a masterpiece. thanks for share this kind of music.

  • Great song & video. Always loved this song. Brings back the time when you were young & the world was a much better place.I feel this song didn't get the recognition it deserved when it first came out. Thanks for posting this, brings back a lot of memories.

  • @1976GeorgeMa Totally agree with your sentiments

  • Very good song about coming of age from the 1960s...probably Bobby Goldsboro's best.

  • @KrasnyPloshad11 what is alimony my friend???? 2 divorces down now in 3rd marriage when husband left me with a 4 yr old have never taken a penny from anyone let alone even my fair share which i more than paid for in the 1st place thanks! - my kids my responsibility my job! We are not all hard nosed bitches some of us are actually mugs for falling for the same old shitty promises men make to get what they want !! whilst i get u r trying to make a joke the truth usually outs itself eventually! x

  • I hear this song in 1973, I was only 11 and wondered if my first time would be like this. Time had passed and sure enough without my doing it happened like this, I was seduced by an older woman, a totally innocent situaltion, I was a different person after this moment and every now and then I hear it on AM radio, my mind goes back to a time where many of us remember the "first time" and remember the things we were doing.

That's the great thing about memories, you can visit them any time you want

  • take your helmet off.... wait, that's your hair !?

  • I was 16 she was 23. I remember that summer well.

  • Love it

  • wow what a helmit head

  • Another GREATTTT song!!!! That I never heard of, Thanks for posting it.

  • this takes me back to the 70'when i lost my cherry to my science teacher she was the best. i am now 50 something it was a very good year.

  • I didn't live in America. Never did. But as a teen, America was the centre of the musical universe, after Liverpool, of course. But this song was a lovely, romanticized view of being young there. A red Chevrolet, a losing of innocence, a mint julep...

  • this takes me back to 70' when i had sex science teacher. i will not say how old i was but she was so tender to me it was very good year.

  • in my vauxhall viva 18 years old with my dream woman aged 32 on baildon moor w yorkshire. shit i was so in love its 28 years ago n i dont regret any of it.....

  • Wow older woman make little boy into man great tune bobby goldsboro 73 I was 7 then.

  • This song is absolutely beautiful......Takes me back to the Southern California life which I enjoyed in the 1960's.......CM González....Sierra Cuban, Miami, Florida

  • sometimes i wonder if this is a good or bad thing, you can experience your first ever love, encounter etc in this beautiful way and have this wonderful memory but then the womans gone but stays in the back of your head for the rest of your life and youll never see her again, sad really

  • @boomdocker100 i was 21 when i had my first experience , this was with a woman who was 15 years my senior, i haven't forgotten it and it was 17 years ago. i wouldn't have changed a thing. i love this song :)

  • @boomdocker100 better to have the wonderful memory,

  • @ladyknine -So true ----

  • @boomdocker100

Damn, I know that feeling. You never forget, even if you're happy with someone else, and it always hurts to remember them. That pain never goes.

  • too true we all have some sort of "hidden love" that we long for but are still happy

  • @boomdocker100 evolution!

  • @boomdocker100 Its a good thing, the dream of love lost is better than the reality of what humans call love spread across a lifetime. All great love is short. Even those who love whole life long remember the first time.

  • this song gets me choked up. Came near the end of the best summer of my life, good ole 1973

  • I like the 12 guitar chords.

  • Great song ,good old days , good luck everyone whatever you doing or wishing for

  • @mehdihweb Couldn,t have put it better.

  • Thumbs up if your getting pissed off with the banner adds on every video.

  • It's great song thanks. Just song like or don't like It. Let's cut other rubbish out of on YouTube .

  • every teenage boys dream

  • Can anyone tell me what the B side of this is please ?

  • You don't "become a man" by humping some horny broad on a sand dune one summer night. You become a man by getting an M-16 rifle and using it to blow holes in people for your country

  • @IEatManure

I'm really impressed. Does that M-16 make you thing any bigger?

  • @IEatManure Yeah thats really mature butthead! As Spike Milligan said "Join the army, travel to interesting countries, meet beautiful people and kill them!!! Just fuck off mate!!!

  • i love this song since i first heard it back in 1993 when i was 17. it made me listen to the words even back then. such a beautiful tune

  • Great song. A school teachers favorite song.

  • the comments below are absolutely ridiculous.... get a life, and appreciate the art for what it is. modern songs have no romance. it's art for christ's sake....

  • In my country this is not statutory rape and in context of when it was first written and the sentiments expressed it is really sad to see such an expression of innocent coming of age trashed like this..

  • one great song of all times

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever. The recording is perfection. Absolutely love the gorgeous piano outro.

  • If the situation was reversed, the man would be in jail.

  • @pjgumby Not so.

  • @pjgumby Not in the UK they wouldn't!!!

  • Whatever I listen to I always come back to this song. Never fails to deliver.

  • great great song peeps

  • she was 38 i was 23 what a summer that was for me

  • Have loved this song so much since I was young. Who would have thought I would have met with a much younger man myself many years later in much similar circumstances, but ended up marrying him. Im 51 and he is 29 and we have been married 10 years - love you Ralph! Such a timeless, beautiful tune....

  • The best statutory rape song ever written. Had the character genders been reversed, this song would never have seen the light of day.

Classic, prescient example of one-way discrimination.

And indeed this is a most haunting melody capable of transporting the mind and soul to THAT time and THAT place long gone but never forgotten.

  • @The5thAngelRose it might not be statutory rape in all countries - here in Australia the age of consent is 16 in most states.

  • @terpie51 It is always a pleasure to hear from our Aussie friends down under. I appreciate your educating us all on Aussie law. The thing is here in the States, people accept this song for what it is. I posted the comment because if the roles were reversed - white, thirty plus male helped a 17 year old teenage girl become a woman - this song would never have made the air waves. White males in America are held to different standards. Don't be fooled. There is no real equality in America.

  • @The5thAngelRose yeah I get it, thanks. I still absolutely love the song. Cheers

  • @The5thAngelRose Have you ever heard a song called 'Young Girl', by Gary Pukett and the Union Gap?? Try listening to those lyrics. It brings down your whole arguement I'm afraid.

  • @looking4ferdy Dear Ms. Ferdy, how in the world do you interpret Young Girl as contraverting my position. In Young Girl, the MAN tells the young to go away. The two songs have completely opposed outcomes. You need to listen to GP and the union gap a few more times, young lady. It is this simple, Summer the First Time is statutory rape (in the USA), Young Girl is not. In Summer, the adult woman is a criminal. In YG, the adult man is not.

  • @The5thAngelRose But the lyrics are questionable though...He's singing about feelings he has for a very young girl, and yes I know he tells her to 'run....before it goes 'too' far, but those lyrics I doubt would be allowed of today. What is the age of consent in the US anyway?? As far as I can see on wiki, it can be between the ages of 16 to 18, depending on which state.

  • @The5thAngelRose these days due to social paranoia i doubt if billy idols ''sweet sixteen'' would even get any airplay as he was in his late twenties when he sang that tune. i guess we live in more repressed times these days.

  • @The5thAngelRose That's ridiculous....He's 17 for a start. The age of consent is 16. And I reckon he definitely gave consent...don't you :-)

  • @looking4ferdy Your legal ages are off, Ms. Ferdy. This day - Oct 27 - there is an Ohio Teacher who is under indictment for asserting her womanhood on five high school boys. Hey, you are not one of those cougars we hear about, are you? Anyway, I hope you find Ferdy and that he/she is of legal consenting age for you.

  • @The5thAngelRose No, haha..Give me a break.. My man is older than me. :-) My legal ages aren't off as far as wiki is concerned. In the UK it's 16....Same as in many US states too. Anyway, if this song really was inspired by this 'coming of age' occurance then I'm glad, because he made a hell of a tune from it. :-)

  • @looking4ferdy Right Honorable Ms. Ferdy, I could not agree more strongly with you when you state "he made a hell of a tune from it." I shall quaff a few pints in your honor and give a silent toast in your honor.

I always thought he should have written a follow-up song to this tune taken from the woman's point of view but 20 years after the encounter; similar to what Harry Chapin did with Taxi and Taxi II. Be well and stay away from those 17 year olds ; )

  • The best statutory rape song ever written. Had the character genders been reversed, this song would never have seen the light of day.

Classic, prescient example of one-way discrimination.

  • no everyone hasnt said everything...i wanna suck his lips off they look so soft...mr. stefs mom again lol

  • I think everyone has said everything ... Brill

  • I do remember the first time.....

  • Bobby Goldsboro is not only an excellent performer but also a terrific songwriter. His music is timeless. Growing up in the Chicagoland area in the 60's I remember how his music was played by the top 40 radio stations all of the time. I remember when I first heard the song "Summer The First Time" and thought that it too would be another big hit for Goldsboro. Oh, what memories the song brings back to me. The music arrangement, the lyrics and delivery make it the best. Thanks for the memories

  • I wish that music today, if it can be called that, would have the same effect as this kind of music. This song has so much heart and soul to it. Bobby Goldsboro is timeless, and his voice is mesmerizing

  • this song is very emotional (Has the affect of bordering on me crying when i hear this) it is such a wonderful song

  • I'm 52 but God does this bring back memories as the song says..it takes me back to when I was young..music u can't beat it for affecting the memory well done

  • This song has such a haunting melody. Every time I hear it I drift back in time to my innocence . Life was so much simpler back then. Just knowing I can never go back makes my love this song. A summer treasure

  • @jetclntn Totally agree

  • @jetclntn could not agree more, such an evocative song from a time of sweet ignorance.

  • Greatest summer song ever recorded.

  • @jetclntn No point in leaving comment now you've said everything I wanted to say!

  • @jetclntn Totally agree, makes me remember good times.

  • @SkylarsMoMo I'm sure it would of happened back then as well.

  • I love the piano run in this song and the song is beautifully orchestrated

  • Is Bobby zipping himself back up at 4.00. Perhaps he's just knocked one out on the strength of those beachside memories. I know I would. What a babe!

  • this record reminds me of my summer hols in the 70's, such a great tune. Strange how some songs get into your soul !

  • GET IN THERE BOBBY LAD

  • i bet he had soggy bollocks next day hahahaha

  • This is a perfect QAF tune ..I have always loved this track since a kid ..thanks

  • Song about a MILF.

  • Just heard this beautiful song again for the first time in many years - What lovely memories of a long gone innocent time - So evocative many thanks!

  • Yeah, its cheezy as f**k, but who cares.... brilliantly written, beautifully performed. Will always be an all time favourite of mine.

  • Boy, i do remember this song from an movie the summer of 42, it brings back good old times. I was just an teenager myself.

  • For Christ sake. When I was 31 I seduced a 17 year old girl and they fuggin put me in jail for it!

  • LOL @myrtlebox

  • One of the most gorgeous summer songs- ever!

  • It's the strings in this tune that are just smokin'!

  • @takemeback2 And the girl in the video has lashes that look like they could easily draw blood.

  • you screw a woman who's committing statutory rape and that make's you a man? Bullshit!

  • @owg59 it not statutory rape in dear old blighty, you Americans seem so hung up on sex, which is probably why FDR jailed and killed Wilhelm reich, whose theories on sex and the young were spot on. When I was 17 I used to sleep with one of the secretaries at work who was 32, and it didn't do me any harm, and I tested this as much as possible every lunch time I could, as any other right thinking 17 yr old would you are big enough to look after yourself then you know

  • Has someone been sent here by Bret Easton Ellis?

  • Sent here by Bret Easton Ellis. Wish he had his own radio show.

  • For some reason this song really upsets me, it's great though =D

  • I JUST MADE A HOT ASS SAMPLE FROM THIS GUY RT!!

  • That is one of the vest songs ever you dont realise then they had real orchestra and arrangements none of this electronic stuff, which is why this song has stuck in my mind all my life , those high violins brilliant stuff very understated, it is listenng to summer

  • I used to do my best to get seduced by any woman from 14 on wards

  • @Marcus538 then you got married or what?

  • @yeahyeaya no do it again when ever possible

  • what a great song for a july night!

  • bobby goldsboro's songs are all like stories. they are more than just songs, they sum up an era too, and are easy to sing along to while you think about the meaning. they are pure magical.

  • a mrs robinson momement !

  • one of the greatest SONGS OF AL TIME ITS A CLASSIC

  • Great song. Words and music just speak the story.

  • So love this song, i can relate to it as i was 16 and she was 21, O the 80's

  • It takes place in Florida. "Billy Ray" is a Southern name. She sips on a mint julip. A julip was a Southern drink. Almost no bartender knows how to make one any more. 1973 when this was a hit is already 38 years ago.

  • The song was a hit in 1973, but was written in 1968 about a woman he met in 1958. She was 31 in 1958. She is 84 now if she is still alive. He is 70. Time flies. Enjoy your yourth while you can.

  • just lov this song . its my life.

  • ONE HELL OF A SONG

  • Can not let the last day of June go by without playing this. Priceless.

  • I am listening to this song on a hot afternoon on the last day of June. Fantastic!

  • @shanx2002 It's hissing down with rain where I am.........Buggers up the romance of it all.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded! This song transcends generations. Think about it. How many 17 year old boys made love to 31 year old women throughout history?

  • reminds so much of the summer in the 70s

  • 19 people are still virgins :) beautiful song, up there with the best if them.

  • Mad eyelashes on the quare one!!

  • This song brings back so many memories, especially when I went thru the same thing, yeh I went out with a young man half my age. Mmm those were the days. Fantastic song it still gives me goose pumps after 20yrs lol..

  • @superjune1960 good for you!!!

  • I heard the tail end of this song today and it made me come straight in here and look it up. I am surprised that there is a video clip for it. I would have thought it was too early for videos back then. Still gives me chills when he sings about seeing the sun rise as a man.

  • Is she a school teacher?(just kidding)

  • I agree with the comments below. Life was sweeter and more carefree then. Mr. Peabody's wayback machine would come in handy right now. I believe most of us who remember this kind of music would go back.

  • @The1fuzzylogic Totally agree. I swear when I hear songs like this....And Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman, I can feel a physical ache in my heart for these times all over again.

  • a timeless masterpiece, thanks for posting.

  • This song makes my heart beat faster....

  • oh yes..i remember it well..she was a dam sight more than 31 tho in my case

  • I'm 51, I could cry , I want to go back to that magic time when life was so wonderful and new !!

  • @tymba100 I agree with you im 50 and wish i could sometimes turn the clock back.

  • @tymba100 ..I'm 51 too..and feel exactly the same.. life was just so much more real and meaningful...I hear this song and it twists my insides (in a nice way)

  • This song disproves Bobby Goldsboro's critics who said his music was little more than soft ball fluff. This is a brilliant song, with a magnificant performance by Bobby, and is the best produced record I have ever heard.

  • The strings at 4:04 are sublime.

  • I have not heard this song in a long time.
