I have to admit, I was pretty thrown off the first time I saw the ending. no parents, no friends, no sean connery, no nothing. the end. fuck you, kevin.
After all these years, I'm just now discovering that a lot of people are disturbed by this ending. When did everyone turn into such blubbering pussies?
@Druffmaul It's more or less a children's film. The idea of your parents blowing up to a little kid can be quite unsettling. Still a great ending though.
I dunno, I started reading Roald Dahl when I was 5. By the time I saw Time Bandits I was pretty used to children being eaten, grandparents being killed by drinking bleach, being permanently turned into mice, drowning in chocolate etc.
Time Bandits had a very similar "better off without them" feel. Can't see how any child would find that part upsetting.
I didn't really care for the parents, they were rather neglectful towards kevin. They cared more about appliances than him in general. Plus I don't really think the ending was that sad, because the wink the fireman played by sean connery gave him kind of implys that the supreme being is still watching over him as well as the fact that there are still worm holes everywhere so it can be possible for kevin to return to the ancient greek timeline.
He told them not to touch it, but what do they do? :)) I agree to anyone who said that this completely says "F*ck you" to the average movie audience xD
@tyeb29 What do ya mean? I was than happy to see his pathetic, materialistic parents get blown to smithereens. And I expect I wasn't the only one. He was much better off on his own..
@Keihzaru He doesn't need help with any of that stuff.. he is smarter than his two ex-parents put together. Plus, don't forget.. he has a copy of THE MAP. He can go anywhere he wants in time with it. *Insert adventurous theme tune here*
Definitely one of the more WTF movie endings I've seen in a while

This is a good example of how a terrible ending can ruin a good film.
You are enjoying a film then it ends on a real downer. Kevin deserved a happy ending after overcoming evil. To turn him into an orphan was perverse.
No wonder it was a box office turkey; it deserved to be with an ending like that.
Gilliam must of thought that he was Polanski or something.
There is a myth in filmaking that bad endings are very " artistic" ; they are not, they are just bloody depressing.

Kid, don't you know anything?
If you outright tell someone not to do something, you'll just encourage them to do it.
It's idiotic, I'll grant you, but that's human nature.

Thumbs up if your parents would've done the same thing.

This is the clip I was looking for, except some idiot ruins it by adding his own voiceover at the end. Is the non-tampered version anywhere? Thanks.
