AT THE LONG CLOSED DOWN TAVERN IN Richmond Hill ONTARIO,CANADA, WHERE I MADE ALL MY RETIREMENT MONEY THRU REAL ESTATE. IN THE MID 80S...DID THESE IDIOTS EVER MAKE A DIME FOR THEIR RETIREMENT? GEMMA
@repelghosts Sounds like you were kicked out of this band and totally resend their music. I think Ben Mink has some $ saved for his retirement since he wrote the K.D Lang song "constant craving" and played all the guitar work on Geddy's solo project, yeah I think he's doing okay.
great tune from the Canadian scene- this song is a total radio song and one I have loved since i was a child and a radiohead. ahh, the good old days!! thanks for sharing and for the post.
This is one of those tunes by a Canadian band that is so epic...but ahead of its time so it didn't get the airplay it deserved. It just rocks! Turn it up folks.
I could listen to this song everyday and never get tired of it. I saw them perform at my college and still consider it today one of my favorite concerts. And I've seen some pretty big name groups.
This is one of Canada's best bands ever..... They should get a star on the walk of fame. Or at least get some recognition for what they did with a lifetime achievement award of some sort. Forget the Juno's they're a real joke.
@cinematicpro Isn't it amazing that quality like this goes virtualy unnoticed while idioots like 50 cent and Kanye west are all over main stream internet ? I think we may be de evolving as far as music goes.
I bought Black Noise while in my progressive rock phase (still in it) and my girlfriend was a Rush fan. We went ot see Rush at the Oakland Area in like 1983. We didn't know who was opening for them and it was these guys! She was like who is this? I didn't hear her, I was rocking out!
I remember this broadcast! Cool to hear the early version of this song, but I think Marty Deller's great drumming added a lot to the song on the later version.
I agree, though even with Martin, the Black Noise LP's drums could have been mixed better. I own the vinyl, along with the "CBC" CD reissue...and IMO Mike Jones @ Sound Interchange could have done a better job on the final LP mix...very thin. Martin's drums can be best heard on the "Head Room" direct to disc LP. The sonics on that LP were truly amazing, as is the case with most audiophile DTD recordings. Might be hard to find these days, but I still own my copy...and cherish it :)
i remember watching this in 76 theres another one with just nash. i wonder if anyone has it. he does a soundtrack for a film by the painter salvador dali. saw them at the college of art in toronto at about this time.
My brother and his band at the time had the honor of opening up for them at a bar in Utica,NY(Four Acres) waaay back when...I got autographs, the song list/sheet,ads,and all sorts of stuff from it...WOUR actually played it live on the air(the first set)and I taped it onto an 8-Track(late 70's,sorry!),which has since busted, but if I can fix it,I'll copy the show.I was under 16 so I couldn't get in to the show, but my other brother went...great show!...They had Ben Mink with them when they played.
@gregles777 ..I got mine a few years back from a "One Way Records',out of Albany NY...it sounds great, being as the LP always was kind of muffly and distorted in spots....check it out...
Nightmusic with Rainer Schwartz. This was when FM was a duo - before MArtin Deller joined as drummer. Ben Mink would later replace Nash and then record a solo album. He later produced k.d.lang! Now do you have the French made film of Genesis performing songs from "Nursery Crime" that was shown on the same program.
gosh thi9s brings back memories,i first saw this band on nightmusic with ranor swartz excuss the spelling on TVO in the 70's great show how i mi9ss a inovative and artistic program like that was for it's time.Bought their direct to disc album that they had out at the time, still have it somewhere awesome band, and yes i don't understand y they are not as well known as Rush and other progessive Canadian bands
I saw F.M. open for Rush at the Capitol Center in Prince Georges Co Maryland on the Signals tour in 1982. Never heard of them before, but I got their album the next day and have been a fan ever since. They really deserved to make it as big as Rush or any other Canadian prog band. Cameron, Martin and Nash were great togeather! I wish we could get the back catalog on disk today...
@oscillator3 wow...I don't know how I missed F.M. opening for Rush at the Capitol Center in Prince Georges Co Maryland on the Signals tour in 1982!! I was definately an FM fan then but not so much a Rush fan until Signals so maybe that's why. Luckily I was able to see FM at NEARfest 2006, the North East Art Rock Festival on Saturday, June 24th, 2006 in Bethlehem, PA. And most likely THAT was the end of FM playing live.
@oscillator3 You might like Canadian band Max Webster. checkem out.... a million vacations, they also do a song with RUSH. the frontman for Max Webster is Kim Mitchell who is considered a bit of a Candian icon...had some great solo stuff in the 80's, but Max Webster was real good, for siome reason never made it big in the States.
@oscillator3 You might like Canadian Band MAX WEBSTER ....... Kim Mitchell was the frontman, for some reason they never made it big in the U.S. but were pretty big in Canada.
I remember this back then.. time flies, probably recorded on beta max lol wait beta didnt come out till 77 78.. how did you record this had to be the t 80's
all these comment's are bogus,Rush is my favorite band, but let's be honest.Black Noise was a great album,as good as anything Rush has done,FM is good too,and Cameron Hawkin's is a great musician,Martin Deller is a great drummer, ask Neil Peart,he will tell you.Nash the Slash, what can you say,Genious
Say what you will,i love this band. They were a great canadian band at the time. Not only that but Nightmusic with Rainer was a step ahead of any program going at the time i tuned in as often as possible damn Mcclean and Mclean for getting it cancelled just because they said fu*k this is Canada we are free after all,thx rainer for all the good times
Wow! I don't think I've ever seen this before. I never knew there was a no drums lineup of the band.
I saw them at NEARfest about 3 and a half years ago. If you think Cam looked silly in 1976, you should see him now. Well, he doesn't look so bad, except that during the performance he had this ridiculous jumpsuit with all these superfluous zippers all over it. I wanted to say, "1980 called! They want their jumpsuit back!". LOL
There is a drummer in the band. Martin Deller was his name but didn't come to the band until 1977. This video is recorded in 1967 (year before FM's debute album 'Black Noise'). On Black Noise (first album) Deller plays drums for this song.
Yes, I'm well aware that Marty played on Black Noise, as well all their other albums. I met Marty, he signed my copy of Black Noise (which I've owned for about 16 years now). My point was, I didn't know the band originally consisted of just Cam and Nash. I most especially never knew they had actually performed on a TV without a drummer (Marty or otherwise).
I love the way the video starts all crappy, real nice touch! And then when the skull comes up, um, wtf? A great video, thanks, thanks, thanks for posting it!!!
PLAY THAT FUNKY KEY BOARD WHITE BOY!! He looks ALOT like Dave Mustaine of Megadeath...hehe. I saw Rush live in concert and they ROCKED...Never ever heard of F.M. until today...sorry.
Playing 2 keyboards, a bass pedal and singing, I love it. Amazing that people appreciate losers on American Idol but guys with the real talent are virtualy unknown.
I saw these guys open for Rush in the mid eighties, (I managed to get back stage and partied with F.M. (Ben Mink), Platinum blonde Rush etc.. totally great guys, experience of a lifetime, great tunes!
If memory serves me correctly, it was 'Power Windows', I actually evaded security to sneak back stage that night, thrill of a lifetime as I was a Rush fanatic in those days.. lol ;)
OMG! Somebody please tell me where I can get this for my iPod. I got laid for the first time to this when I was in high school. Saw them at the Gardens in Toronto. They used to open for Rush. Also saw Nash the slash at Nags Head North in Markham many times.
Love the band and the song! I was happy to finally see them live at Nearfest a few years ago. A little disappointed that neither Nash nor Ben was playing with them but the new guy was great. I met Cam later and introduced myself as the nerd who created the "Totally Unofficial FM Homepage" years ago... don't look for it, it's fallen into the big bit bucket in the sky.
wow! first time seen nash slash with no bandages. saw then open for rush during moving pictures tour in 1981, they were awesome although they had ben mink in the band
WOW! That must have been in the early to mid 70's! The first time I saw Nash was on Nightmusic back in 1977 when he started covering up with bandages. I was an avid fan. Saw them many times in small town bars across the Niagara Region. Usually the bars had no cover charge either!
Not only does Nash have no bandages, but Cameron Hawkins is playing with what amounts to a primitive drum machine. Martin Deller hadn't even joined the band yet!
OMG! This had to be the single most influencial musical moment of my entire life! Seeing this again after so many years sends shivers down my spine. Ever since seeing this and Black Noise on Nightmusic concert I've been a huge fan of FM and Nash the Slash. Unfortunately, not being from Toronto my opportunities to see them have been limited to just 5 shows over the years. I'd love to see Black Noise as it is the more fascinating piece.
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! This is easily the most amazing relic I have ever stumbled upon here at youtube. Thank you SO much. You've made this FM fanatic very happy :)
..get out the bean bag chair and a pipe- a box of Brador - brings back some fine weekends in the basement in 1976 man...saw FM in TO a couple of years later- Tube? Gasworks?
Thankfully Q107 in Toronto plays this track.

Indeed. Just to clarify for those who think I'm trolling, I'm just refuting a previous comment on how FM "blew away" Rush as an opening act in 1981.

WOW! That must have been in the early to mid 70's! The first time I saw Nash was on Nightmusic back in 1977 when he started covering up with bandages. I was an avid fan. Saw them many times in small town bars across the Niagara Region. Usually the bars had no cover charge either!
NiagaraMan13 3 years ago
Holy crap, this is old!
Not only does Nash have no bandages, but Cameron Hawkins is playing with what amounts to a primitive drum machine. Martin Deller hadn't even joined the band yet!
Great to see this footage.

Thanks muchly

Completely agree! Not to mention, this is one of the rare times that Nash the Slash performed without his bandages!

Saw FM in Schaumburg (Chicago Suburb)at a big club called "B'ginnings"
in the 70s. I remember how the band said they were blown away by all the fans they had in attendance.

I love watching Cameron mouthing his synth parts.
I always preferred that hollow sounding drum machine instead of the live drums. Nash used that same drum pattern a few times too. Sounds good.
TheLittleDevil 3 years ago 3
Back when the band was a duo - Martin Deller hadn't joined on drums. And Nash wasn't wearing the bandages.
Saw them at the Chimney (upstairs of the Gasworks) about a year later with Marty and the Neon sign. Thanks for posting this!
