  • William Hague should have been Prime Minister, Instead we had filthy Tony Blair.

The only reasons I can that I can think of him not winning was because his party was divided on the E.U, He had Portillio as Shadow Chancellor and he was going to privatise Channel 4 so we could get our licence fee money back.

William Hague would have been overall good for the country.

  • hague ois a class act. this labour govt is doomed! its about time too!

  • Vote for change, vote conservative! Oh wait conservative means keep it like the status quo! Funny sounds like an oxymoron to me. Oh you mean go back like how it used to be! How to destroy Britain=the conservative manifesto.

We need more social equality in the light of MPs expenses and Bankers ridiculous expenses. Labour has not given us this and the tories will destroy any hope for the poorer in society to much greater extent. Vote Green June 4. Real change

  • A true gentleman, I met him last week at a function.

  • i'll tell you what is seriously wrong with 21st. century britain. 1. you have a monarchy and an aristocracy for starters. you have a queen who owns several "homes" throughout the country. gets paid to wear designer clothes and parades throughout england simply as a symbol.she seems to be there more for the sake of the tourists than for anything current or real.

  • 2. you have a house of lords made up significantly of aristocrats, not fully elected by the people.3. you still have a class system, perhaps an improvement from pre world war ii but still exists. 4. the state has an "official" religion, the church of england that gets financed by the state.5. which should really be no.2 you have 2 princes who once out of the military who have no "real" jobs other than be professional playboys,& the papparazzis pet poodles.

  • I have visited the States several times and I love it - it's a wonderful country, and the people are fantastic. But I gotta tell you, I don't really appreciate being told what is wrong about my country by you in such a negative tone.

I think you've got quite enough problems of your own to deal with, never mind lecturing the rest of the world about how they should run their own affairs. Let me ask you - isn't this the kind of attitude that got Bush in so much trouble?

  • And let's be frank - almost nowhere in the Western world has such endemic corruption within it's political system than the United States.

Let's talk about buying senate seats, the powerful lobbies and special interests, political dynasties (You just avoided having two families in the White House for 20 continuous years).

Don't lecture. It's always incredibly unflattering on an American.

  • you made several comments on your icon space about gordon brown and how he is undermining britain. i'm telling you what is really undermining britain. and i really wish that labour would get back to what it was under tony benn or michael foot, or at least you tories had under edward heath

  • Tony Benn was never leader of the Labour party, and under Michael Foot they lost an election and alienated 2 thirds of the country. That's a funny thing to wish for - not exactly a 'golden age' for socialism was it?

Edward Heath was not a good Prime Minister for Britain. He bowed to trade union pressure and failed to tackle inflation which destroyed our economy. His brand of ''One Nation'' Conservatism might have been OK in Macmillan's day, but not in the '70s.

  • you couldn't have an empire and socialism too. and what is wrong with supporting trade unions?

  • and 1 more thing my tone is matter of fact, neither positive or negative

  • We love the Queen. She is much better than a President. Presidents come and go. The Queen has been there for nearly 60 years, and she has worked continously her whole life. Our monarchy has provided Britain with a stability not seen in much of Europe. We British are traditional people, and we love our heritage, despite the Labour government's best efforts to destroy our heritage with a pointless reform of the House of Lords. The Queen has approval ratings that no PM/ President can dream of

  • mickmars, she gets paid to live in a palace. she cuts a few ribbons. and she appeals to american tourists. is she and her aristocratic friends really worth bankrupting britain over.

  • She dosen't bankrupt Britain. On the contrary, the Crown estate brings in annualised profits of £300,000,000. The Queen's residences in London don't belong to her. Her family gave up all of the Crown Estate Land in return for the Civil List payments. It costs 66p per person to fund the monarchy. It's worth it.

  • Too bad she has no realistic power. GG

  • If she dissolves parliament, the public will support Her

  • ''...despite the Labour government's best efforts to destroy our heritage with a pointless reform of the House of Lords."

When the rich sons of Lords can take daddy's seat in the House of Lords when daddy dies, it NEEDS reform. The Labour party have gotten rid of most of these unelected toffs and will finish the job, given time.

  • Unelected... you mean like Gordon Brown and Lord Mandelson and Glenys Kinnock and Lord Adonis and Baroness Royall?

  • Mickmars is spot on.

The irony of a Labour supporter whinging about lack of democracy is breath taking, given the current leadership and cabinet.

Labour couldn't care less about democracy or the people; they're a thoroughly corrupt bunch and the sooner we turf them out the better!

    BRING ON THE ELECTION!

  • Any appointments by this elected government are not guaranteed for life and their sons will not take over their positions. Compare that with the rich sons of Lords taking daddy's position in the House of Lords when daddy dies to block the legislation of an ELECTED government if they don't like it. Labour has gotten rid of most of these hereditory Lords and WILL finish the job off, given time.

  • Justify it however you like, but everyone knows - probably even you if your honest with yourself - that democracy has been dealt a massive blow in this country by Labour.

They treat our civil liberties with contempt, as the appalling ID Card scheme demonstrates. Brown himself said that an election would bring "chaos" - a deeply offensive remark if ever I heard one.

Labour always think they know best, and give themselves more powers to carry out their damaging policies. They'll never change.

  • So why is Lord Digby Jones still a peer?

  • @Mickmars90 What do you mean when you say that Gordon Brown unelected? I assume, and correct me if I'm wrong, you mean he wasn't elected Prime Minister. Could you tell me, then, which Prime Ministers were elected? Winston Churchill, perhaps? Thatcher? Blair? No, none of them were. After a general election, the party (or parties) with the most amount of seats form a government and elect a Prime Minister from within the government. Brown was a joke, but I hate this "unelected" crap.
