This is my cousin Billy Stewart from Wash, DC. Billy was a Chess Recording artist in the 50's and 60's and was discovered by Bo Diddly, and his uncle Calvin (Hound Dog) Ruffin. Billy wrote and recording the 60's hits "I Do Love You" & "Sitting In The Park" and this sweet joint "Cross My Heart". Billy died in 1970 when his vehicle plundged into the Neuce River in NC along with 3 of his band members. I am proud of my Family's Music History-Recording Artist Dane Riley
I ( David Henderson-bass player) had the great experience to play behind Billy on the road as part of his band. I left a few months before his unfortunate accident. He was an awesome entertainer. I along with my fellow writers (David Scott, Warren Hagood II, and Sidney Pinchback), wrote this song especially for Billy.
I'm a DC cat, and lemme tell ya............this guy could cut it loose at the Howard Theatre, man..........I was one of like 5 white guys who'd be goin' there all the time!
Saw Billy..........Gene Chandler............the Larks.............the Epsilons............you name em, I saw 'em............same with the Carter Barron on 16th Street! Man, do I miss this kinda music............I'm still playin my cassettes on my in-dash cassette player in my old Benz...........love the 60s and 70s soul!!!
Billy was a special singer. He had a style all his own. From the days when singers sang and you recognized them after a note or two. Most singers today sound alike. Go Billy...you still BAD.
I remember hearing "Sitting In The Park" on a radio station in Norfolk, VA. After finding out the singer was Billy Stewart, I set out to find the song on CD. I came across this BS CD in my friend's used record, cassette, and CD store with "I Do Love You," "Sitting In The Park," "Cross My Heart," and other songs. I couldn't believe I found this gold mine of music; every song was a hit! How many artists could claim this, unless it is a collection of their greatest hits? U R missed Billy-RIP.
what a song, and it does begin like Sitting in the Park. Billy was one of a kind. His voice was incredible! I was lucky enough to see him once in my youth!
Just Blaze is a genius.
