@juliusyeung0330 what idiots. the creatersscrewd up this movie. the immortal scene made me fall of my chair laughing. the "battle of immortals" was just a saying. just because there were 100thousends of persians against the soldiers of sparta
This is what happened. The Persians were originally going after Athens for helping Persia's enemy during a previous war. But Persia wiped their enemy out and was heading for Athens and wanted to destroy anything in it's way. The Greece city-states had to band together to defeat Persia. Eventually when Persia got close the Spartans told the Athens to go back and evacuate the city. The Athens listene and left. 300 spartan stayed and fended off the Persians for 9 days.Theywerekilled, but PersiaLost
the spartans are born into war, if a woman did not give birth to a strong and healthy boy, then it would be left in the mountains to die. At age 7 the young men are taken to the military barracks and dont return till they are 23 years of age, and thats if they survived the ruthless training, and you call them pussies, they arent the ones sitting on there couch commenting youtube videos all day.
Besides real story is not 300 Spartans as the last stand it was 1000 there plus another 7000-10000 spartans. TALK ABT TWISTING HISTORY BY WESTERN MEDIA
its sad that this film doesnt give credit to the other warriors who fought with the spartans at thermopylae. there were not 300 warriors, there were 1300. 300 spartans and 1000 other warriors who fought alongside them but whose name i cant remember.
The spartans and up to as many as 10000 greeks made up a defense. After persia discovered the way around them only the 300 and 1000-2000 other greeks stood left to hold the persians as long as they could. During the battle at land, the athenian navy crushed the persians at sea.
can all you guys that are fighting about whats realy right and whats wrong you are just destroying it for everybody else so just shut up and enjoy the movie like everyone should
IN the Spartan army they had no need for one the only people they would attack were within reach through mainland and they had more then just Athenians the had 3,000 Free Greeks to help them.
Ok they actually explain why only 300 go. It's the time for a festival where they are forbidden to go to war. Leonidus learned that the persian army was going to attack. So what did he do? he found a loophole! the king could take up to 300 men as a guard for him. So he took 300 of his best warriors and went to hold the Persians off until his army was free to wage war. So he picked Thermopylae Or "the hot gates" because it was the best spot for 300 to hold off the persian army. THere is no Navy
Your are so ignorant. haha. dude seriously it wasnt the spartans triremes, it was the ATHENIANS triremes that were helping them. Why do you think whenever sparta waged war against Athens, it took like 4 years for them to practically tie. Becuase athens navy brought it supplies, and sparta couldnt touch them inside there own gates...incase you didnt know sparta didnt have siege equipment either.
The spartans did have a navy during the peloponesian war. They had an alliance with the persians (Can you belive it?), and the persians gave them an almost unlimited supply of money. When the Athenian navy was destroyed with the spartan navy, The spartan league got a new one (paid for by the persians, of course). At the end of the war, the spartans had won the most land and the athenians were completely bankrupt.
Alrite all you guys have your history screwed up haha. For one thing Sparta's military was completely militia. they didnt have any naval ships or anything of that sort. They were too far inland. Also there was only 300, but also i think 1200 Athenians with them. The persians attacked 3 times. the first time they attacked they killed 160 spartans. the second like 100. and the movie shows the third wave, when Leeonidas(Sparticas) dies.
well you are obviously an idiot....they did have naval ships... the battle of salamis???(they had 200 ships compared to persias 400) where they tricked the persians into an attack and slaughtered them. They had close to 6000 other athenians with them. so you my friend are wrong
Salamasis was supported by the athenian navy...not spartas. hate to ruin your smart moment there.
no all of the spartan males from age 7 to 60 were deemed worthy to fight and trust me they had a lot more than 300 they sent out 300 to hold the opposing army for a time so the naval portion of there defense could be realised there were 2 (count um ) 2! kings in sparta one who controled the land protion and one who controled the naval portion. there were more than like 20 athenians to help the spartans more like 3000 this was probaobly the only time they cooperated.
InFlam3sW3Trust you really need to read up on your history dude and if you do I really don't know where you get your facts but the 300 was actually the last of the spartan force if it wasn't and the greeks had more spartans than they wouldn't have been taken over by the romans after they were in war with persia.
but this legend come from a true story 300 agains so many to defend there people i think brave man and honorable man is the proper words to say about them
Bravery? Honor? You need to read up on this subject, my friend. Only 300 were sent because Sparta wanted to uphold their reputation as unbeatable. They knew very well that those 300 would be slaughtered. The king went because a prophecy said that to ensure the safety of Sparta's future that a Spartan king would have to die. And it's disrespectful to not even acknowledge the 7000 other Greeks.
Not to mention the 1000 Thespians that did not leave with the others sent away. They went ahead to try and stop the Persians from ever coming while the 300 Spartans sat back waiting. Of course, the Thespians were slaughtered, and so were the Spartans. They weren't fighting for freedom or anything like that..they were fighting because they were ordered to, slaughtered because they were ordered to. Back then, it was horrible, there was no honor to be had and no bravery, they were ORDERED to die.
@upongod; There were other soldiers, you know. They did not fight because they were brave, they did not fight for honor, nor glory. They fought because they had no choice. Their one and only job was to die. If they were to retreat, they would have been killed by the hands of other Spartans. They had a reputation to hold, a reputation of being fierce warriors who never back down, so they chose to die at the hands of their enemy. They were great warriors, but that's as far as it goes.
@InFlam3sW3Trust Actually all the Spartans at Thermopylae were voluenteers, and each of them had atleast one heir to carry on their family name. They did have a choice, and they had other jobs, they were farmers and labourers.
@InFlam3sW3Trust You really think that those spartans went because they were afraid their own people would kill them? They broke their own laws by agreeing to go during the time of year this took place. They went to delay the Persians so that the women and children of Sparta would continue to live the way they did. They did not do simply for a reputation. In fact how Spartans got their reputation was the fact that they were not afraid to die and would continue to fight until they couldn't.
@InFlam3sW3Trust dude their own people wouldnt have killed warriors that are almost impossible to kill. that is killing their own army. try to do some research and not just talk outta your ass
Lool idiot. Add 700 thespians and 400 thebans to that. At the beginning of the battle there were even more. Too bad know one actually takes the time to study the real history...morons.
@refuckulate420 And several thousand other Greeks on land and at sea, idiot. You really need to do more than go to Wikipedia for your information. I suggest actually doing some research instead of opening your idiot mouth and coming across as what you are--a total, complete dumbshit who knows nothing.
@refuckulate420 yes u are correct but at the same time, this movie is based of the graphic novel from from frank miller, and not what actually happened, but if you want a more accurate adaptation watch 300 spartans, its an old movie but it was filmed were the battle took place in real life. :)
@upongod no? they where 9000 spartans and 20000 greek warrios against 100-300000 persians! a huge thing and brave, but not as big as the film makes it.
@upongod there gay yes but it werent only 300 spartans there were 300 spartans 700 thebans and 400 of another people i forgot wich one and yes they were brave and later the battle of marathon was won by the spartans termophylae was a loss and de destroyal of persia was made by alexander the great a macedonian born in pella '' in that time macedon territory '' now its greece
@irodion007 What's gay about not fearing death, rather die yourself then a fellow soldier, not surrendering, fight and die for freedom? Why's that gay? Cos' in Europe and the U.S.A, that's known as "heroic".
There were around 8000 - 10000 hoplites along with their squires (they were slaves who maintained the weapons & sometimes fought alongside their masters) led by Leonidas & his 300 hand picked Spartan knights (his personal bodyguard) totalling a force of between 16000 - 20000 men.
The myth that there were only 300 Spartans there was perpetuated for obvious reasons.
But the fact is,the battle at Thermopylae was & remains the sinlge most heroic last stand in history.
@llokkee You're incorrect. The whole Spartan army never numbered more then 15,000 men at the most at any battle in it's history and he was forbidden to take them. There 300 Spartans & about 500 helots who didn't fight and 5000+ other Greeks were with him. There are absolutely no figures ever written to back your words.
These figures arent mine, ive read them on numerous occasions
I will clarify though by saying that most historians agree that there were around 8000-10000 aditional soldiers from 'varying city states' that accompanied the 300 Spartans .
Each one of these men had by one & often two Helots (not squires,my mistake) which usually arent accounted for.
In this battle as in many others,Helots did participate in the fighting, just not as frontline troops.
@llokkee Good you admit there were only 300 Spartans. The helots did not fight unless attacked, they supplied.. The 3 historians below are the only ones of consequence that could even remotely have any knowledge from archives. Herodotus took his figures from persian archives & interviews. So your figures although are not completely off by (Pausanias) views, still I would lean towards Herodotus. It is remarkable that a relatively small fight about 2,500 years ago could still have renown today.
Herodotus wrote about the battle at Thermopyle. ONE problem, he never lived during the battle. According to him, he asked "veterans" who fighted against the persians Also, there is no prove at all that there have been suck a big army (200 thousend persian).. according to british sources, its almost impossible. Persians were on the same level as the greeks (athenians) during that period of time. Sparta was un-civilized slave-state wich forced 7 year young boys how to fight and battle.
If you are really interested in learning more about mighty Sparta... ancient athenian historian Xenofon wrote a book about them with the title "The city State of Sparta"....you will find there valuable information about their political and social structure, even details about their daily, personal life...you will also discover that the Spartans were highly sophisticated people...not uncivilized as the Athenians spread all over ancient Greek world and you nowadays believe by mistake!
no he held the Alexanders army for 30 days in zagros mountains, Greek army had only managed to hold the Persian army for 3 days. Plus ariobarzan's army was only 1000 and the Greek army was like 8000(including the 300 Spartans).
Im not saying ariobarzan was better than Spartans (they did a fucking good job) they held millions of Persians for 3 days and killed 20 000 Persians, but Persians also did a great job. (30 days) that is a lot for a small army...
persians had ario barzan who held the alexander's army for 30 days in zagros mountains with his 1000 man.
plus there were 7-8000 warriors not 300 and they only held the persian army for 3 days. and the immortals had killed them in the third day of the battle.
yea they are heroic and they killed 20000 persians. but persian army was 2020000 and 20 000 is only 0.9% of the persain army.
ariobarzan run away like a pussy and was slaughterd by his own when he tried to enter persepolis in disgrace...real men like the Spartans stay and die to the last, pussies like arobarzan ran as in i-ran...LOL!!
there were 9000 greeks and then on the second day leonidas ordered all greeks but his 300 to fall back while leonidas and the spartans died like heroes
The music made the movie even more epic lmao

But the fact is,the battle at Thermopylae was & remains the sinlge most heroic last stand in history.

@llokkee You're incorrect. The whole Spartan army never numbered more then 15,000 men at the most at any battle in it's history and he was forbidden to take them. There 300 Spartans & about 500 helots who didn't fight and 5000+ other Greeks were with him. There are absolutely no figures ever written to back your words.
5,200+ (Herodotus)
7,400+ (Diodorus)
11,200 (Pausanias)

@Boukephalos1
So the figures I gave still stand.
llokkee 8 months ago
@llokkee Good you admit there were only 300 Spartans. The helots did not fight unless attacked, they supplied.. The 3 historians below are the only ones of consequence that could even remotely have any knowledge from archives. Herodotus took his figures from persian archives & interviews. So your figures although are not completely off by (Pausanias) views, still I would lean towards Herodotus. It is remarkable that a relatively small fight about 2,500 years ago could still have renown today.

I agree, the battle at Thermopylae still has the power to enthrall us even today.
It has been an interest of mine since I first saw a depiction of it in a history book my mum bought 4me at the age of 6.
I dont think I said there were more than 300 Spartans anywhere,I guess I just wasnt clear about that.
Helots did supply & maintain, but they often fought out of desperation,& this was a desperate battle.
They just arent included in the stats, which are usually surmised at anyway.

@llokkee But the fact is,the battle at Thermopylae was & remains the single most heroic last stand in history.
You're Right Here.

If you are really interested in learning more about mighty Sparta... ancient athenian historian Xenofon wrote a book about them with the title "The city State of Sparta"....you will find there valuable information about their political and social structure, even details about their daily, personal life...you will also discover that the Spartans were highly sophisticated people...not uncivilized as the Athenians spread all over ancient Greek world and you nowadays believe by mistake!

ariobarzan ran away LOL
no he held the Alexanders army for 30 days in zagros mountains, Greek army had only managed to hold the Persian army for 3 days.
(30 days) that is a lot for a small army...

spartiatopoulo 2 years ago
persians had ario barzan who held the alexander's army for 30 days in zagros mountains with his 1000 man.
plus there were 7-8000 warriors not 300 and they only held the persian army for 3 days. and the immortals had killed them in the third day of the battle.
yea they are heroic and they killed 20000 persians. but persian army was 2020000 and 20 000 is only 0.9% of the persain army.
