This is what happened. The Persians were originally going after Athens for helping Persia's enemy during a previous war. But Persia wiped their enemy out and was heading for Athens and wanted to destroy anything in it's way. The Greece city-states had to band together to defeat Persia. Eventually when Persia got close the Spartans told the Athens to go back and evacuate the city. The Athens listene and left. 300 spartan stayed and fended off the Persians for 9 days.Theywerekilled, but PersiaLost

The spartans and up to as many as 10000 greeks made up a defense. After persia discovered the way around them only the 300 and 1000-2000 other greeks stood left to hold the persians as long as they could. During the battle at land, the athenian navy crushed the persians at sea.

Ok they actually explain why only 300 go. It's the time for a festival where they are forbidden to go to war. Leonidus learned that the persian army was going to attack. So what did he do? he found a loophole! the king could take up to 300 men as a guard for him. So he took 300 of his best warriors and went to hold the Persians off until his army was free to wage war. So he picked Thermopylae Or "the hot gates" because it was the best spot for 300 to hold off the persian army. THere is no Navy

The spartans did have a navy during the peloponesian war. They had an alliance with the persians (Can you belive it?), and the persians gave them an almost unlimited supply of money. When the Athenian navy was destroyed with the spartan navy, The spartan league got a new one (paid for by the persians, of course). At the end of the war, the spartans had won the most land and the athenians were completely bankrupt.

no all of the spartan males from age 7 to 60 were deemed worthy to fight and trust me they had a lot more than 300 they sent out 300 to hold the opposing army for a time so the naval portion of there defense could be realised there were 2 (count um ) 2! kings in sparta one who controled the land protion and one who controled the naval portion. there were more than like 20 athenians to help the spartans more like 3000 this was probaobly the only time they cooperated.

They knew very well that those 300 would be slaughtered. The king went because a prophecy said that to ensure the safety of Sparta's future that a Spartan king would have to die. Back then, it was horrible, there was no honor to be had and no bravery, they were ORDERED to die.

There were around 8000 - 10000 hoplites along with their squires (they were slaves who maintained the weapons & sometimes fought alongside their masters) led by Leonidas & his 300 hand picked Spartan knights (his personal bodyguard) totalling a force of between 16000 - 20000 men.

The myth that there were only 300 Spartans there was perpetuated for obvious reasons.

I will clarify though by saying that most historians agree that there were around 8000-10000 aditional soldiers from 'varying city states' that accompanied the 300 Spartans .

Each one of these men had by one & often two Helots (not squires,my mistake) which usually arent accounted for.

In this battle as in many others,Helots did participate in the fighting,just not as frontline troops.

So the figures I gave still stand.

The 3 historians below are the only ones of consequence that could even remotely have any knowledge from archives. Herodotus took his figures from persian archives & interviews. So your figures although are not completely off by (Pausanias) views, still I would lean towards Herodotus. It is remarkable that a relatively small fight about 2,500 years ago could still have renown today.

Herodotus wrote about the battle at Thermopyle. ONE problem, he never lived during the battle. According to him, he asked "veterans" who fighted against the persians Also, there is no prove at all that there have been suck a big army (200 thousend persian).. according to british sources, its almost impossible.
