They hissed the awful puns when I saw him in '78 as well. After the second one, he stopped cold, stared sternly out at the audience for couple of seconds, and then said, "Look, I can take a *lot* more of this than you can."
Nice to have a place to chat about PDQ. But why did Telarc post such a crummy recording? The professor is barely audible, and drowned out by the crowd. It reminds me of the way that too many PDQ recordings are ruined by audience responses louder than the performers, because of bad microphone placement and/or moronic mixing. They all need to be re-recorded. I'll figure out when to laugh, thank you. Just let me hear the music. Schickele's music is great, when you can actually hear it.
Great stuff. It's a shame, really, that there's only two DVDs, especially since one of them is a "best of." The Moose especially would have been great to see.
You'll love his "Wurst of PDQ Bach" with a picture of him eating bratwurst on the front. Been following Peter since the 70's; you're right, he's brilliant, and not everyone can pull off playing his stuff.
A loss-leader is (for example) when a store has a super good price on something, like milk for $1 gallon. They actually lose money on the milk, but it brings people into the store, where they will buy other products that are marked up. Leider (songs in German) is pronounced the same as leader.
I don't get the word joke on "Loss Lieder" in the Schubert-part. Who can help me out on that one? Is it some kind of American slang/innuendo I don't get? Thank you for helping me out. And now it's time to play: "What's my melodic line!" :-D

@John19182004 Tradition! I've been going to his shows since I was a kid in the mid-70's, and they hissed back then, too.

@John19182004 it's always been a tradition for the audience to hiss at the bad puns at PDQ Bach concerts.

Heard about PDQ Bach on public radio a few years ago. Good stuff. I didn't know there were DVD's out. I did know of the audio recordings though.

I think he's not eating it... it is positioned as if it were a flute.

daintyfairy83 3 years ago
He said "Wagner disliked Goethe so much he wrote an opera called 'Goethedammerung'" which is a play on Wagner's Gotterdammerung.
