Well, seeing as this was a entertainment series and all, i'm willing to bet they said that for more effect. Unless he was stabbed in the neck, arm, back of the knee, or straight up in the heart, it wasn't a major artery. It would have been bleeding a lot more and he wouldn't have lived that long with a main artery cut. there are no main arteries near the ribs, at least not by the stomach.
