Spoke to Rodney Van Cooten today. We went to school together in Brooklyn Heights. His brother Joe and my brother were in the same class. I remember how much he loved music then. Still sounds great and I hopefully will be seeing him for when he gets back from vacation this month. Rodney has been with the band for about 30 years. Always loved listening to Joe Cuba and his band!
OYE ESTE TREMENDA CANCION DE JOE CUBA EY SU SEXTETO, CHEO SI ES UN VERDADERO BORIQUA MAN.VEN EY VEN EY VEN EY VEN,ESTA CANCION A ME MI PONE A BAILAR. JOE CUBA IS DEFINITLY THE MAN, SU MUSICA VIVIRAS ASTA EL FIN DE ESTE WORLD.COMO DICE CHEO EH EH MAMA EH EH MAMA,SWING BABY AND I DO MEAN SWING. LO MEJOR EN SALSA
Thanks for downloading this, the video and music quality are great. I was fortunate to hear Joe Cuba in the 60's in Los Angeles and in Las Vegas! In L.A. it was in a very small smoke filled club, capacity 75 people squeezed in a gozar! In Vegas he appeared in a lounge, bringing gente to the dance floor! Viva Joe Cuba.Great memories.
Too bad but there seems to be no film footage of the Joe Cuba sextet from the 1960's. If any one can find one, Please post it!!! Especially with Cheo Feliciano in it.
Most great Bands have a prime time of 5 years where they really make an impact. Joe cuba's prime was a little longer 1962-1969. After Cheo Feliciano, Nick Jimenez left and Tommy Berrios the band was not the same. It was like any band that loses important components. I still think Cheo's best singing was done with the Joe Cuba sextet. He will probably never admit it, but during their prime Cheo Feliciano,Tommy Berrios, Jimmy Sabater, Joe Cuba, Slim Cordero and Nick Jimenez were Great!!!
I visited Joe Cuba in 2005 as i wanted to produce an album with him. It fell through as he wanted complete control, yet he was very friendly and was a walking encyclopedia. We talked in depth about his music and about the scene in the 50's and 60's. He told me that Tito puente was a big influence, and that Tito Rodriguez was his cousin. He also told me that he had to fire Cheo Feliciano cause he was not making shows as his drug abuse was making it impossible, yet he really Liked Cheo.
Wow, that was really a down fall for a lot of great cats back in those days. I know first hand, but that's another story. I'm sure glad that Cheo came to his senses and broke loose from them demons. Since then Cheo has become one of the greatest singer of salsa, and a great human being at that. Love this cat with a passion. Of course I mean that as a person and as a singer. His voice is so gratifying, second to none in my book...
I have XM and always they put few songs from Joe Cuba in special BANG BANG they say always is a classic and is Ameican station they don't put Spanish music, means Joe Cuba was a BIG THING back in the 60's, for me one of the BEST OF THE BEST!!!
I meant to write "Beep Beep Ah Beep Beep Ah Bang Bang." I found a couple of online lyrics for song with the title Bang Bang that is credited to Joe Cuba. The chorus that song has is "bang, bang, bang Bang, bang, bang, insane, sane, sane".
Is that really a Joe Cuba song? If so, was it recorded after the Beep Beep Bang Bang hit?
"Beep Ah Beep Beep Ah Bang Bang!" I LOVE this song!! For me, this song is associated with watching folks do Latin dances in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, New York City) in1969. That was the 1st time that I ever saw Black people do Latin dances (salsa?) & I'm African American but from AC, New Jersey where there were hardly any Latinos. I loved to know this song's lyrics. Help please. Thanks. I also remember another Latin song from then called "Hey Leroy, your mama callin you, mon". Great times.
My Bad Lady...That's what happens when there's no profile photo, lol. Is all good though, we're in it for the love of the music. And to me there is no better music than old school salsa, mainstream jazz, Afro Cuban jazz, Latin jazz. bebop, etc, etc... Heck, anything Jazz goes good in my book. I can even relate to some contemporary jazz, not much, but some...
PS do you remember the St. George hotel down town? Habaut the Marion manor up in Bushwick? Great times there...
this i heard so long ago. then I was reintroduced to it when david samborn did a remake. love it. i'm looking for a clear full sounding version that would be played on the radio. if any one have a version that is clear, let me know thanx!
Remember that lady squeaking in the background. Love this song. Plus, when I would go to the Bears games with my homeys we would Beep Beep and Bang Bang. Too Cool!
OMG..havent heard this song in ages, but just about aweek or so ago i heard it on the spanish tv station for a commercial with kids..and it remineded me of my kids when they were small,my daughter just loved it..I've just called her so that she may hear the song again, and of cause she cracked up...thumbs up on this song..brought back good memories...cks
Z-100 in New York used to use this as the closing theme for their morning show, which was really funny since they were a Top 40 station and didn't play a lick of Spanish music!
LOve LOve It ! great memories of being at my Godmothers house fridays or sat nites...all us kids playing outside late what a treat.. while all the adults cooked and Danced all nite...:O) Brooklyn NY late 1960's
verdaderamente no sabia que habia vido un reencuentro de Sabater de Cheo y de Joe cuba en su sextette es toda una novedad para mi si pudieras colocar todas las piezas tocada ahi te lo agradeceria. saludos!
Originally Bang-Bang was recorded on a summer evening in the Bronx, all the voices even the little kid you hear on the original recording are actually people that were there when the recording took place summer of 1967 the Bronx don't have the location.
@panamerica45 I remember those days well. I was raised in the Bronx and at that time 1966-67 I lived on the 2100 block of Southern Blvd. During the summers, on the median strip we would party all night long. We called it breaking light!
Even Willie Colon and his boys would come to our neighborhood and join in the party atmosphere. Folks think New Orleans is something special, it was like that all the time.
I think the first time Bang Bang was played, it was at the Bronx Music Place,
@Gman9259 The Bronx Music Place, was that a record store? Also remember the oldest record store also in the Bronx still there close to either Prospect Avenue or Jackson, the owner was a musician and he has history of all the Fania, Tico Recordings, etc. Can u remind me of the name of that store? Wanted to also tell you that if you're looking for old music that store is the one.
@panamerica45 The Bronx Music Palace was also known as the Bronx Music Casino. Back then the bands traveled from dance hall to dance hall and if you were lucky enough to get a ticket you could be partying and dancing for hours and hours of live music from as many as 17 different bands during the course of your stay. It was awesome! I don't live in the Bronx, but I remember those times like they were yesterday. Find out from they kids of that day about Symphany Sid, and his radio show! PARTY
@Gman9259 I've heard about Symphony Sid from live performances mentioned by Polito Vega but never knew he hosted a radio show or I should say I don't remember. I don't even know who to ask for that info but I'll see.
The Joe Cuba sextet were perhaps the best band in the 60's. Too bad radio stations have forgotten them. They had great hits with Tu abuela adonde esta, and they remade the best version of OYE COMO VA. My favorite songs is Mi Lindo Son, from the bailadores album, and solo por ti from the Alma del barrio album
Your right Brother... I grew up listening and swinging to their music way back in the days, the good ol days. Alma del barrio is probably my favorite of all, but I do love all JC music. Not only was Joe a superb congero and band leader. But Joe was also an authority in this great genre ( SALSA ). He knew music history like the back of his hand. We lost a great musician and a great man. Joe Cuba is gone, but his music will live on for ever. BANG,BANG for ever !!!
Your right Skycap... Those were one of the greatest combination of Latin cats ever. Of course Willie Torres made a great impact to the group also... " SPEEDY GONZALES" Was a great hit and Willie was the lead singer on that one. And for the life of me, I can't find it on youtube... MAN !!!
I do like Joe Cuba and he was a good musician. But the first crossover in this genre was done by Mongo Santamaria with (Watermelonman) of Herbie Handcock. And Mongo was working this concept with his Orquesta Manhattan since 1957..(Gerry Zaragemca is a world's known authority in Afrocuban Percussion and Music).
No, Joe Cuba and Cal Tjader didn't hook up. Joe had several vibes players. The one I remember was a tall dude with a bad eye. He was really good too, although no one can top Cal Tjader.
i had the pleasure of meeting him in the early 90s as i worked in the later years of the fania all stars and went to his studio and he was a pleasure to hang with and a great host in his house, i will miss him and the world as well, god rest your soul and que viva la mambo/salsa/ y el boogaloo, joe.
1965, the Sextet got their first crossover hit with the Latin and soul fusion of "El Pito (I Never Go Back To Georgia)". The "Never Go Back To Georgia" chant was taken from Dizzy Gillespie's intro to the seminal Afro-Cuban tune, "Manteca". Jimmy Sabater later revealed that "none of us had ever been to Georgia". [1]
In 1967, scored a "hit"in National Hit Parade List with the song "Bang Bang" -ushered in the Latin Boogaloo era. H, that year in the Billboards with the song "Sock It To Me Baby"
this music helps old men walk long distances yo it still sounds good after 50 years
