Well. in 1989 Metallica were a metal band and the crowd was a metal crowd. Also it was a single show and not some stupid day long festival. Old metal shows = great crowds and the bands putting a real emphasis on quality because they are the event. Festivals (even big four) = crowds who are too tired out by the final act, bad venues, bad setups and bands that are playing on autopilot while waiting to get the stupid festival over.
