I've had great success, with a teenaged Bichon, combining walking and heeling, and making sniffing and roaming a separate activity: a reward. When we go for walks, it's a business proposition, where obedience skills are on display...always in the heel position; sit when I stop; down on command, etc. After a walk I put him on a 30-foot leash in the park and he's free to roam and sniff without restrictions. It's gotten to be something we both look forward
