  • Great video, tks for posting.

  • WOW!!

  • ew ditchlights, really??

  • repent to Jesus christ. Jesus loves you all, come to the kingdom! the holy spirit says come!

  • This is enough to make a kid of 60 go weak at the knees, these steam locos have to be one a mans greatest inventions.

  • @critchley3819 - Agreed friend, this video had my attention all the time, steam engines in the dark, that was something else !

  • I like to see them lap the miles. - Emily Dickinson

  • Is it pulling power cars for hotel power? I like when they do that instead of putting a locomotive in the consist, it makes the power much more authentic. Look at that clean plume coming from the stack. That's a superb crew in there for sure.

  • WOOW

  • With that low headlight and flashing ditch lights, C&O 614 looks like an Amtrak P42DC from a distance, minus the smoke and steam. Great vid!

  • That train was flat modockin! And yes, running under her own power!

  • one word TRIPOD

  • I like the ditch lights! And 22 CARS??? beat that 844!

  • How fast was it going at 3:47?

    Awesome video!

  • Maybe 45-50 mph? It's been along time... There were some slow spots near Tuxedo NY, but this is north of Southfields where they began to gain speed.

  • I know it's 2010, but I can never get over how impressive this almost 180 year old technology is. Thanks for the reply!

  • @EeRocKK Steam technology is well over 180 years old.

  • @Kleman09 I was referring to locomotive steam power despite not saying that in my post. You are most correct though.

  • She's ment to haul up grade and go 80mph!

  • Me and my 2 year old Son love watching Train video's on here...This was AWESOME!!!Thanks so much for sharing...ROLL TIDE ROLL 365!!!

  • Ya know what I like about this video? No diesel helpers!!! :D

  • YES!!! wish they still did that.

  • Strasburg can probably build a brand new one if they really wanted to!

  • That's cool. Hope the 614 runs again someday. This is a great video.

  • How often did they run the Hoboken-Port Jervis trips?

  • 22 trips between 96 and 98 plus a few additional test runs and make-up trips.

  • imagine the spectators if the 614 and 2102 were fixed up and double headed somewhere. something from the glory days of railroading, like philly to nyc

  • As a volunteer on all but one excursion from '96 to '98, I have to say this is a great DVD. It brought back so many fond memories of working those trips. Thank you for releasing this. It is very much appreciated.

  • We had this kinda camera quality back then?! lol. It looks better than most of them today!

  • Maybe a Fund-Raiser? I think it would be easier to get her to Strasburg. Steamtown already has engines in line for restoration

  • MAN, IT LOOKED LIKE THAT OLD ENGINE COULD RACE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING AND WIN. That was one big beautiful and fast train.

  • I wonder when 614 is done pulling yellow flag express, whatever it was called, what will happen after that I hope Ross Roland takes it to steamtown or ohio central railway.

  • She's siting on a siding in Jim Thorpe, PA, i believe. He needs 650,000 to get it back to running order and moved so it can run

  • Steam locomotives are America. People

are nostalgic for lots of really great things we just no longer have, so the sight and sound of 614 gives everyone a thrill. We took a few excursions back when 614 was called "The Chessie Steam Special". Rowland used to highball that thing like it was the Orient Express, and it was wonderful to experience high speed rail travel as it once was, and should always be, across the U.S. Great videos!

  • Really great video. I lived in Ramsey NJ when they were making these runs on a regular basis. I remember sitting on the screen porch and hearing this huge sound get bigger and bigger. We jumped up and ran through the backyard to where the Erie (sorry NJ Transit) tracks were and watched this magnificent monster go by.

  • I took this trip the day before, The most amazing thing on the trip to me was the amout of people lining the route of the trip to watch it go by.

  • Believe ito or not, but that is actually N&W 611's Hancock 3 Chime whistle. Back in 2007 to 2008, Pere Marquette 2-8-4 1225 wore that whistle during the Holiday Train in Michigan. That's big comin' from a Reading native. Keep ya posted, dude!

    -Max

  • I was on this train that day.

  • Great Video, check out mind from the same trip. Oct.27, 1996

    Len.

  • Ross had Ditch Lights, Cab Signal and 27 pin jumper capability added. There were several reasons, as I recall, but most importantly because Slam-Trak wanted it.

  • I always hated that "hooter" N&W whistle on that locomotive, it's oringinal was much better. I love seeing Conrail blue in Campbell Hall, and at night, from afar, the engine looks like a new PL42AC with the low headlight along with the ditch lights. Great video.

  • yeah the ditch lights are pretty tacky

  • The ditch lights are a FRA requirement. As for 614 running again, it might depend on the Yellow Ribbon Express effort. I know the engine needs work.

  • Auctually, ditch lights are NOT an FRA requirement for steam locomotives. Ross Rowland had them along with some other upgrades to the locomotive.

  • They are definitely not a requirement, as only a handful of steam locomotives have them.

They were installed along with a few other upgrades (including, I believe, the ability to control a trailing diesel from 614's cab) before the 1998 trips as, I believe, a way to help make 614 look better to Class I railroads that were leery of allowing an "old steam locomotive" to run on their railroad.

  • Yes but please review the requirements they had to meet to run on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.

    That may enlighten you.

  • Were there serious plans to run on the Northeast Corridor? I remember hearing about a Philadelphia to Harrisburg trip (possibly one over Horseshoe Curve also) and a Hoboken to Binghamton trip, neither of which ever happened. I would have loved to see 614 at 100 mph on the Northeast Corridor...

  • there's one thing I really don't understand and maybe somebody could fill me in but why would somebody put ditchlights on a steam engine? It looks really strange...or maybe it was for an excursion or something but ditch lights...yeah...it looks really strange on a steam engine

  • The FRA state that any locomotive that was built in 1945 or newer most have ditch lights in stalled. That's why when Reading & Northern rebuilt 425 this past year, they didn't have to in stall ditch lights, 425 was built in 1928. I'll be seeing 614 tomorrow for I'll be at Port Clinton, PA. where she is being stored.

    Len.

  • Nice to see all the 614 Hoboken/Port Jervis footage coming out of hiding.

  • I love the blacked out tires!!! The way steam should be, get 'em Ross!!!!!!!
