If it were mandatory a penalty provision for not observing this method would have been added. #2 The N.A. code describes the officially recognized way in which people UNIFORMLY show respect to the flag during the N.A. It assumes that everyone present during the N.A. want to participate in a uniform respect for the flag.
The national anthem code does not apply to those that choose to respect the flag in an acceptable non-uniform manner. The national anthem code was only intended to apply to those who willingly want to participate in a uniform method of respecting the flag. The code assumes that all people present during the national anthem want to respect the flag in a uniform manner rather than in some other acceptable way. This is the one catch about the code that many people aren't even aware of.

They write laws to justify their otherwise meaningless jobs. In law "shall" means must. It is a directive or a requirement. Has Sweden closed its courts and dismissed its police? When Prime Minister Palme was killed Sweden had police. Have those laws been declared null? Is it now legal to steal, murder and rape in Sweden?
However "should" and "shall" are not the same. Compare how murder, kidnapping etc. is phrased in US Code - no usage of "should" there. US Senator Obama took an oath to protect and to defend the laws and the Constitution. He shows his oath means nothing to him. The "broken window" theory of policing has police making arrests for minor crimes. The same people usually commit major crimes. Apply that theory to politicians. The flag protocol is a law, a section of the US Code. There are no penalties but no less a law. Many laws have no penalties. Dissenters must pay the price. MLK Jr. violated discrimination laws and sat in jail. Obama opens himself to ridicule for violating laws. He is required to defend the laws in his oath of office for US Senator. I don't watch many films, nor do I care to watch "Wag The Dog". I read up on the film, I don't see how it relates to Obama at all.

YouTube reported this man's account (onegiantstep4man) closed. Nonetheless he shows his lack of awareness of the very important difference between a public official and an ordinary citizen. He lacks awareness of how the film "Wag the Dog" is exactly what is happening with the Obama campaign. It is all PR. Obama is an empty suit with strong media image. Many articulate Harvard Law grads use media to create an image where there is no substance. That is Obama, all image.

Some people sure don't know much about US law. If they did, they would know: #1 The national anthem code is voluntary not mandatory. If it were mandatory a penalty provision for not observing this method would have been added. #2 The N.A. code describes the officially recognized way in which people UNIFORMLY show respect to the flag during the N.A. It assumes that everyone present during the N.A. want to participate in a uniform respect for the flag.

The national anthem code does not apply to those that choose to respect the flag in an acceptable non-uniform manner. The national anthem code was only intended to apply to those who willingly want to participate in a uniform method of respecting the flag. The code assumes that all people present during the national anthem want to respect the flag in a uniform manner rather than in some other acceptable way. This is the one catch about the code that many people aren't even aware of.

What a stupid law. Maybe you should try to get it changed? Btw it actually says "should" as opposed to "must". Many countries have somewhat obsolete flag laws and people have understood that the laws are obsolete.

Laws are obsolete? Who decides if laws are to be obeyed? Then police and courts are obsolete as well. Who needs legislators if laws are obsolete. They write laws to justify their otherwise meaningless jobs. In law "shall" means must. It is a directive or a requirement. Has Sweden closed its courts and dismissed its police? When Prime Minister Palme was killed Sweden had police. Have those laws been declared null? Is it now legal to steal, murder and rape in Sweden?

However "should" and "shall" are not the same. Compare how murder, kidnapping etc. is phrased in US Code - no usage of "should" there. Just the attempt of comparing murder and rape with where one places one's hand when hearing the national anthem is comedy. In a free and open democracy every individual shall be allowed to relate to the flag anyway she wants - burn it or honor it. Note that honoring the flag can be done using alternate hand positions.

The differences I cite are the dictionary's which says should is past tense of shall and must as meanings. I brought the murder of Palme into the discussion, but I did not equate murder with respect for the flag as you did. You twist words around making your argument irrational. The notion of Sweden having laws which you say no longer matter is why Palme was an issue. Your personal attacks discredit your arguments more. Ad hominem attacks appear when there are no rational arguments to make.

US Senator Obama took an oath to protect and to defend the laws and the Constitution. He shows his oath means nothing to him. The "broken window" theory of policing has police making arrests for minor crimes. The same people usually commit major crimes. Apply that theory to politicians. This incident indicates that Obama cares little for laws and his oath of office.

Of course it is a law. But the law it is based on strange archaic habbits. I don't understand this strange obsession with flags, anthem, army and so on that seems to be quite widespread in the US. Get over it. You really got bigger issues in your country. Don't get me wrong, I like the US and every time I was there has been a pleasant time. Issue is respect for oaths of office & law by officials. US law permits flag burning. What other countries allow that? Armies defend borders. Politicians seldom address serious issues. Obama speaks in platitudes. Broken window theory of policing; address minor violations catching people who break serious laws. Police reluctant to enforce laws against politicians encouraging lawlessness. Limousine liberals don't care about lawlessness. I disagree with them.

The flag protocol is a law, a section of the US Code. There are no penalties but no less a law. Many laws have no penalties. Dissenters must pay the price. MLK Jr. violated discrimination laws and sat in jail. Obama opens himself to ridicule for violating laws. He is required to defend the laws in his oath of office for US Senator. He cannot have it both ways. Nor can you. Supporting the law or pay the price. Liberals want to violate laws and not have to pay any penalties.

You need to update your tired, old, rant, JonCBeck. The Pledge of Allegiance hasn't been said in most public schools in nearly three decades. Only a few public schools still require the Pledge, those mostly in conservative states where the majority (as is their right) still respect worthwhile traditions (whatever the history). Elsewhere, that patriotic practice is relegated mostly to private or military schools. Perhaps you would like the same for the flag and anthem?

The flag code has been on the books, in various forms, for decades, roman5. Can you honestly say you've been "oppressed" by that fact? Obama is running for the highest, most powerful, office in this nation, as the man who would represent this country and it's people around the world. At the same time, he seems to know little about this country - how many states (recently said 57), traditions (flag), it's people ("typical white person"), and so on. Obama doesn't belong in the White House.

Barack Obama, in a speech, said his grandmother once talked about being afraid of black men and using racial stereotypes. Obama later said (in a radio interview when asked about this) this was the behavior of the "typical white person." In other words, according to Obama, the typical white person is afraid of black men and uses racial stereotypes.
