did you ever notice how many female folksingers were also stunningly good looking??? Carolyn, Judy, Joan, Mary.. and yet rockers like Janis and Grace YEECCCHHH
Je ne connaissais que de nom Carolyn Hester, maintenant que je sais ce qu'elle fait, je ne regrette pas d'avoir tapé son nom sur Youtube. Je me dis même heureusement que je l'ai fait!
Glorious rendition of a sad song (made sadder by knowledge that Ireland under Britain was still exporting more than sufficient produce to support the populace). Carolyn Hester's voice is clear and plaintive. Many thanks for posting this.
Didn't Joan's sister recently pass away. In all the years I loved Joan, never knew a sister so beautiful and talented existed until I saw the PBS TV special on Joan.
Does Carolyn live in LA? I'd love to see her again. I saw her in about 1964 at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA and got her to sign one of her albums that I still have to this day. Love her. I believe a few years ago she was given the American Folk Singers award.
I recommend "Positively 4th Street" by David Hajdu - this multi-biography focuses on the Baez sisters, their lovers, Farina, Dylan and others, and the folk scene of the early 60's and it's transition to singer/songwriters in the mid 60's.
My mum used to sing this to me when I was a baby, I've just spent an hour trawling the internet for it. I thought it was "taties" not "praties"! Still makes me cry.
Yes, she was a genuine folk singer. Many who became more well known (and wealther) did more crossover stuff that had great fancy productions values and were mainstream hits with folksy images.
Great talents, but not really folk singers. That's a special genre all its own. The Hester voice is still wonderful. The others haven't maintained as well. Gotta love that woman. What a blessing she's been to the folk scene.
Agreed. Carolyn is still touring and comes to Dallas as often as possible. I would say though, that Baez has certainly maintained her voice, as well as many others. We all lose that "range" eventually, but not the love of singing. Carolyn has a beautiful soul.
Yes about Baez. Haven't seen her name on the circuit as a performer, but every once in awhile she pops up somewhere with a social or political comment. Will have to check and see if she has any recent recordings done or in the works.
What an amzing treat. I haven't seen her since 1964 or thereabouts at the Purple Onion in Toronto. I still enjoy listending to the few vinyls I have of her. Cudos to paarshell for finding this and posting it.
A great singer from the folk renaissance of the 1960s. Her simple, clear, pure style--as evidenced in this video--shows that she was deserving of the greater popularity enjoyed by many of her contemporaries (Baez, Collins, etc.). Those who aren't familiar with her are in for a real treat.
What a great singer! She can do a Buddy Holly song and a traditional ballad and can sing with sincerity and the right style and voice. The best of the women singers from the folk era.
I bought an LP of hers way back in the 60's. - She has gripped my heart ever after.

Yes, Carolyn was and remains a folk icon. Read the book, "Positively 4th Street," for a very good picture of just how important she was.

Well, the Irish sometimes call potatoes "praties."
Prata is Irish for potatoes.
