@manaburn Let me answer this question for you. The Mikado was a criticism of Victorian England and the Monarchy, but they didn't want to have the setting in England for fear of getting trouble (possibly with the law, but I'm not sure) so they set it in Japan to make it less obvious.
@manaburn In fact, the movie that this comes from, Topsy Turvy, explains that. There had been a "Japanese art exhibit" in London right when they were trying to think of a new operetta. Legend has it that a Japanese sword Gilbert had bought at the exhibit fell on the floor and as he was putting it back, the idea dawned on him.
@bootes53 It was the story that Gilbert told - but the exhibition started when the Mikado was in rehearsal and think it is generally accepted that it was not entirely true. Worth watching the DVD with commentary as it explains all the thinking behind the scenes. They included the scene - as I think Mike Leigh says it was too good to leave out !
@sErgEantaEgis12 They didn't care about upsetting anyone ! In HMS Pinafore the Head of the Navy - W H Smith (a politician who had recently been appointed First Lord of the Admiralty despite having neither military nor nautical experience) was lampooned as Joseph Porter. Queen Victoria was reported as saying "we are not amused" on hearing of the operetta
I think Mr Leigh understood that you used to be able to get quite a performance from actors and actresses when their likely prospects on being let go were petty theft, prostitution, and dying of consumption in a gaol or garret.
It took a number of viewings, but I finally realized that I wasn't imagining it: Yum-yum is subtly dominating her friends with a kind of pushing gesture not unlike Moe Howard's more brash command to his cohorts: "spread out!"
It's barely noticeable, but speaks volumes about her character. What a splendid instinct for detail, whoever had the idea to incorporate the gesture in the choreography for the song!
Shirley Henderson is such an amazing talent. First time I noticed her was in Topsy Turvy, then it dawned on me that she was Moaning Myrtle from HP! What a shock. I'm just bitter that Europe has hidden this little gem from the rest of us in America.
As for the song, I can't get that fan snap out of my head. Brilliant.
You're kidding right? Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter? The ghost of the little girl haunting the bathrooms at Hogwarts where she was killed by a basilisk... sigh
How utterly charming! No wonder it was such a success, with those lovely costumes and sets.. Shirley Henderson is a wonderful Yum-yum; Pittising and Peep-bo are fabulous as well. When I was growing up G.&S. operettas were a TV Cultural staple, and I'm frankly feeling nostalgic. I think University of Michigan still has a G.&S. society (UMGASS), and their newsletter: Gilbert and Sullivan Boys and Girls (GASBAG). U/M is nearby, I should look into season tickets! Thanks for posting.
I was sitting with 2 friends yesterday, and a guy walked by and said, "3 little maids from school!" my 60-ish friend & I got the reference, but my 20-something friend didn't, so of course I had to look this up for her.
Incidentally, I almost had a chance to sing Yum-Yum a gazillion years ago - but we moved out of town while the production was still a gleam in the director's eye… :-(
I couldnt get this song outta my head, been singing it all day. Thought that I was completly alone a little while, so what did I do. Yep, sang this as good as possible. And after finishing the song I turned around and the whole working crew were applauding (embarassing, yessssssssssssss)
Brilliant use of fans? YES! The incredible sound of them opening is exhilarating and adds a force to the scene. It is part of the music. Thanks for posting.
@Doribi117 Huh. The song popped into my head as I vaccinated the third of three doe kids (baby female goats). You're right, though. Excitement. ...
Catching baby goats is always an exciting challenge. I try to keep in light spirits as I fall on my face. Sir Arthur Sullivan's catchy tunes help slightly. Unlike pigs, goats do not sing.
All of the the girls are lovely singers, but i especially love the alto (is that Peep Bo or Pitti Sing?) Lovely sound and not too heavy, and i love the blocking on "three little maids take one away..."
@dmpippert94 Hey...I am not a music expert, so I don't know which one is the alto, but the girl on the right is Pitti Sing (that's the one, who as I recall, has a more elaborate comic part later on) and the one on the left is Peep Bo
@peteytheaardvark You've got to remember that in this movie the actors are not just playing the characters in The Mikado -- they're playing the original performers playing those characters. According to the movie, Leonora Braham is a single mother with an alcohol problem, and not exactly a character "filled to the brim with girlish glee."
Keep in mind that women in Japan weren't even allowed to go to school back then! lol westerners have been obsessing about Japanese schoolgirls since before there even were any
@Bobsacamano1000 Got it (on Amazon) and just watched it. Thanks for the tip. There is still something captivating about her. She is a very different type of life-force.
@yeayababy Did you notice there are about 10 or so parts of the song depending on different scenes in the show? The solo tuba melody, the high melody, the Jewish theme, etc...? As in if Larry is in trouble, its one theme, if he's innocent but something will backfire it's another...?
Re "ChadSmithFan: I'm still damn shocked they didn't BREAK their fans while doing those intense FAN OPENS lol. Gillber and Sullivan ftw!!"
