I admit that I'm not an expert on the matter, but a plane as huge as a 747, being used to go low to the ground---often very hilly---to dump water, or fire retardant chemicals, seems not to make ANY sense, whatsoever. And not going down low would be very inefficient .

this is a fire fighting 747 the height drop is of no real use and is only used as a promotional video and or test at speed. it is operated by evergreen in the us.

Very good question. Dropped from the height shown here it would indeed mist out. In a real fire situation the drop would be from one or two hundred feet and chemicals are added to help keep the droplets large.

However I do not beleive this is a fire fighter. It is too big to scoop water from lakes and fly close to the ground over hilly terrain. I beleive it is a research project related to cloud seeding where there is a need to drop a large amount very quickly.

Me thinks this is overdoing it. The cost of operating this aircraft is so excessive, any benefit derived from it's capability would be offset considerably. The ideal size for these planes is the Lockheed C-130 (The ideal civilian version would be the L-382, which is a stretched Herky) This is getting ridiculous.
