Anguish, awesome video, very helpful. I would really like to get in contact with you through email to discuss your iOS and Windows 7 dual boot process because I would like to do the same to my mini 10v after I upgrade my ram. ( it will not operate on 1 gig) But I am currently running Xp. If you wouldn't mind chatting with me through email that would be great, one IT person to another. Mjdesalvio@gmail.com
does anyone know for certain if you have to remove the wifi card? I think someone at the factory used locktite to install the screw that holds it in and I can't for the life of me get it out...
Dude, I'm not trying to be an forum jerk or anything but seriously, your voice is very closely remarkable to Owen Wilson man!!! but yeah thanks for this video too..seriously, it helped me swap my girls laptop ram out with simplicity
Negative. The 1010 has the RAM soldered onto a daughterboard with the CPU. The 1012 isn't nearly as intense. Basically just pop off the keyboard, pop off a cover, and you can swap it.
@anguish79 so the 1012 is a lot easier? I wish dell wouldn't keep messing about with their products, there are at least 6 versions of mini 10 whatevers on their site and they all have similar names.
I have never imagined that they would design this in such a sh*tty way. I love mine but this upgrade is a joke. Insult to injury is when you get it all the way open and see that a standard door is all they needed on the back of the mini.
a magnetized screw driver could never mess up a hard drive a put a hard drive on a 12in speaker magnet and it does nothing only electro magnet is the only thing that can screw up a hard drive

If you go to dell buisness branch and select ubuntu dell mini 10v ....you will realize you can get a factory installed 2gb ram...saves a lot of time for 50.00 dollars more!
What are the limits of the Dell 10v motherboard, could it handle a 3gb RAM upgrade? Are there any other tweaks and hardware upgrades that can improve it that you know of?
Very informative video, especially useful on a netbook that seems so complex to disassemble!
Macs you can upgrade the RAM. The new Macbooks its a bit of a PITA, but you can still upgrade them. Also with the price difference between this and a Macbook there is also a performance difference(Bigger screen, better Graphics and CPU, built in optical drive, etc).
With that being said, I also own a 10v with OSX installed and I love it, and yeah, Macs are a bit more expensive than their PC counterparts.
ok you are kinda the same as me, i have this laptop with osx, yer the software i like so i still have it but the macbook and imac i think are a con when you can get a much better pc with windows 7 and simply hackintosh it, i think windows 7 is much better that osx though i have had it since it came out on my desktop
I love OSX. It's a great OS. Apple is a great software company, but their hardware is way overpriced for what it is. Hopefully soon Apple officially supports OSX on off-the-shelf hardware, but I doubt that's gonna happen.
Finally, an intelligent person commenting on youtube that doesn't flame me when I respond to them. :D
Not yet. I'm thinking about it though. Snow Leopard runs pretty good on it but sometimes be a little laggy if I have a few programs open on it.
Did you do the upgrade? Also, do you have the 3 cell or the extended 6 cell battery, and a standard HD or solid state and what kind of battery life do you get?
I have the 3 cell and standard HD, in XP it lasts like 3 hours, but in 7 and OSX it lasts like 2 hours. I'm probably gonna end up buying a 6 cell for it along with 2GB RAM.
Well sir.. I thank you for putting up your video. I breezed through the installation, and everything went perfectly. I did however have a lump under a keyboard near the "r" key, but dis-assembled to find a cable that I didn't touch was laying over a piece of plastic. Less than 5 minutes I had the problem corrected, and all is well. Half-Life 1 was speedy before, but its impressive now. I used Mushkin 2GB PC2-5300 4-4-12. No beeps, but the computer didn't resume because the ram was new!
I would like to do this to my dell mini 10, but I always have heard about the ram being soldered on... Is that not true? I have the dell mini 10, not the 10v... has the HD screen, refurbished, arrived 2 days ago. Thanks!
Nope. With the Mini 10 (aka Inspiron 1010), that is very true. The Mini 10v (aka Inspiron 1011), as you see in the videos, that's not the case. I know Dell made a new board for the Mini 10 that goes up to a max of 2 GB, but from what I've read you can only get it new. That may have changed, but I honestly don't keep track.
I don't even remember any more. All I remember off the top of my head is that I used G.Skill RAM, and that it was slightly overkill for what the 10v can handle. And that it worked. :)
Yep. And now that I look at it, the faster the speed ram (for example PC2-6400) should theoretically help it run cooler. I used G.Skill, but I think PC2-4200 in the above video, versus my new 10v which I put in PC2-6400, and I noticed a slight temperature decrease. Still gets freaking hot though, but that's the joys of passive cooling.
Actually higher speed ram has a higher duty cycle, and puts off more heat in the ram, but I suppose would make the processor run cooler (Taking it out of loops and wasted compute cycles waiting on the ram). I think it was a bit crazy putting shielded memory in a computer that doesn't have a fan. It will trap heat and kill the ram faster, since its not having air move across the heat spreader.
I was thinking about that with the videos, but the flip side is, the heat is trapped either way. I guess time will tell, but it seems to run fine.
Now, on my new 10v, the RAM I brought doesn't have the heat spreader, despite being faster. But, I know the RAM itself is faster than what the 10v actually can handle, so in reality it's only going as fast as what it supports, thus my logic behind it being potentially cooler. Might be faulty logic, but I'm no expert either.
I still haven't gotten my 10v yet (And thank you for showing me how to install the ram), but I ordered DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), 4-4-4-12 timing with a CAS of 4... my logic was that the CAS latency was the number I should really look at, since the computer itself won't be able to use the transfer rate or run at actual clock speed, but I figure the latency would make a noticable change. I hope I am right, but for $40 (with shipping), I figure it couldn't have been TOO costly a mistake if I am wrong.
my question. if this works, why does dell not offer the 10mini with the 2 gig as an upgrade option? Are ya sure the motherboard will even support a 2gig memory module??
I do not believe that microsoft really gives a crap about how much ram is in a notebook computer, nor do i believe they have the power to tell computer manufacturers how much ram they may sell their computers with. In fact, my coworker bought a new HP notebook last year with win xp pro on it and he got it with 4gigs of ram installed.
Exactly what is the difference between a notebook and a netbook? Both have full capability, both run the same operating systems, both can run the same programs. A 10 mini is nothing more than a small notebook.
netbooks dont have disk drives, a smaller processer (900mhz - 1.6ghz) smaller screens, a maximum of 2gb ram and usually solid state drives rather than hard disk drives. thats whats different between a netnook and a notebook, dont think i hate netbooks im getting a dell mini 10 soon, but those are the differences...
oh, so they are trying to push vista and 7 into all of the laptops now... requiring them to all need more memory and more expensive processors.......... sneaky arent they. lol
DDR2. It doesn't really matter which speed you put in there. The N270 has a FSB of only 533MHz so DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) is fine. If you get the N280, go with DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) since the N280's FSB is higher.
I believe the 1GB stick that came in mine was DDR2-800 (PC2-6400). As I stated, as long as it's higher than the processor's FSB, it will step down the speed of the memory to that but will not speed up to it.
Believe it or not, I have seen plastic screwdrivers. Granted, I've only seen them once or twice, and I haven't been able to locate them, but they do exist. I know I seen them with a Philips tip, but I can't remember if I seen them with flathead or not.
Thank you! Got my 10V in the mail last week and upgraded the memory on the same day without a hitch. This was also my first time ever opening up any kind of laptop. The video was a bit intimidating to watch but once I started tinkering it went just fine.
this is a very informative video however i didn't know it took all that to upgrade the memory. i was going to buy a mini 10v and sell my mini 9 but now that i see all this i'll keep the mini 9
But, they will only read up to 3.25GB approximately. Unless, you enable PAE (Physical Address Extension) in which case you can read up to I believe 64GB RAM with a 32-bit OS.
Hillarious how complicated RAM upgrade is...and it's in "Part 1 of 3"!
Tho I'm a bug Dell fan I just bought the Samsung NC20. Can't believe it. But, for LESS $, you get MORE: more hard memory, RAM upgradability like changing a litebulb (even easier cuz you pop it in rather than screw it in!), multi-motion touchpad, 3 in 1 reader, longer 6 cell batt, LESS weight (!), bigger keyboard, identical keyboard layout to my current Inspiron (which is important if you're a key person.)
Thank you very much for showing what a major ordeal it is to updgrade the memory. I am exicted about getting one of these with a Comcast bundle but after seeing the video- will hold off on the memory upgrade. Have an Eee PC and the memory upgrade was 50X easier.
Yeah, it's a Panasonic. IIRC, it's a Panasonic SDR-H200. Bought it before my son was born in January of 2008. Takes some pretty impressive video in my opinion, although I do have a few minor gripes about it.
Dell brand is good quality but they are always behind in specs and overly priced compare to their competitors...case in point: Mini 9...and now they almost builted a perfect mini 10v but behind again with only 1 gig ram and a pain in the ass 2 gig ram upgrade...come dell , do ur research and be ahead of the game.
Or you could convert it to hackintosh here dellhackintosh . com

lol, you don't know what computer you have??
if the bezel on your screen is made of black plastic, and there is a seem between that and the lcd screen, then you have a 10v.
if a piece of glass covers the whole lcd (or led) screen and black bezel, then you have a mini 10.
remember the ram is somehow soldered in there in a mini 10, so you cannot upgrade it.

Exactly what is the difference between a notebook and a netbook? Both have full capability, both run the same operating systems, both can run the same programs. A 10 mini is nothing more than a small notebook.
STARZFAN31 2 years ago
netbooks dont have disk drives, a smaller processer (900mhz - 1.6ghz) smaller screens, a maximum of 2gb ram and usually solid state drives rather than hard disk drives. thats whats different between a netnook and a notebook, dont think i hate netbooks im getting a dell mini 10 soon, but those are the differences...

The key is last year. As part of the final phase out of XP, the 1GB limit is a new MS license agreement to still bundle XP.
jubenvi 2 years ago
oh, so they are trying to push vista and 7 into all of the laptops now... requiring them to all need more memory and more expensive processors.......... sneaky arent they. lol

thx a lot again, the upgrade is done, it tooks me aboiut 15 minutes to change the ram modul.
istead of a credit card, i use a guitar plektrum to open the keyboard and the dashboard.
The next projekt is a dual boot win7 and osx leopard,

This is a very helpful tutorial ---- but I have to admit, I kinda giggled because his voice sounds a lot like "24" from the venture brothers.

Which kind of RAM, please exact Description, is mounted in the 10V? DDR1 or 2, how much Mhz etc.
Thx lot.
Weidoz666 2 years ago
Hope that answers your Q.

Since when don't screwdrivers have metal tips
:/
Antoligy 2 years ago
Believe it or not, I have seen plastic screwdrivers. Granted, I've only seen them once or twice, and I haven't been able to locate them, but they do exist. I know I seen them with a Philips tip, but I can't remember if I seen them with flathead or not.

ive used one had two one phillips and one flat head lasted a day they probly have a good quality though

Thank you! Got my 10V in the mail last week and upgraded the memory on the same day without a hitch. This was also my first time ever opening up any kind of laptop. The video was a bit intimidating to watch but once I started tinkering it went just fine.
gwscientist 2 years ago
You're welcome! It's a bit scary, especially the first time you do it. Doesn't even phase me any more..

It's soldered, so I dunno. Not something you'll see me attempt. :D
anguish79 2 years ago
this is a very informative video however i didn't know it took all that to upgrade the memory. i was going to buy a mini 10v and sell my mini 9 but now that i see all this i'll keep the mini 9
DevaJones03 2 years ago
Honestly, I think it looks a lot worse than it is...but that may also be because I'm no stranger to ripping laptops apart.
anguish79 2 years ago
so basicly you get your RAM and build your netbook around it... thats a lot of effort! i was thinking of upgrading my memory but i thinking not! :)

lol.. basically yes.. :)

XP can recognize more than 2GB of ram. All 32-bit version support 4GB of physical ram
kenmha 2 years ago
But, they will only read up to 3.25GB approximately. Unless, you enable PAE (Physical Address Extension) in which case you can read up to I believe 64GB RAM with a 32-bit OS.

I was wondering if there was a 4GB Ram card I could upgrade my Dell Mini 10V with?
jmart1987 2 years ago
XP will only recognize up to 2gb
guitarman1756 2 years ago
If I tried to do this there is a good chance that I would...
a: Have a piece of plastic break off any of the various parts
b: cut a ribbon
c: lose 5-10 screws
d: realize I forgot to re-install the wireless card at the end
....
This list goes on an on, it just seems to risky.
I guess one could however, buy one, try to upgrade it and if you break it, return it. But I don't condone such behavior.

Hillarious how complicated RAM upgrade is...and it's in "Part 1 of 3"!
Tho I'm a bug Dell fan I just bought the Samsung NC20. Can't believe it. But, for LESS $, you get MORE: more hard memory, RAM upgradability like changing a litebulb (even easier cuz you pop it in rather than screw it in!), multi-motion touchpad, 3 in 1 reader, longer 6 cell batt, LESS weight (!), bigger keyboard, identical keyboard layout to my current Inspiron (which is important if you're a key person.)
financeoncall 2 years ago
Thank you very much for showing what a major ordeal it is to updgrade the memory. I am exicted about getting one of these with a Comcast bundle but after seeing the video- will hold off on the memory upgrade. Have an Eee PC and the memory upgrade was 50X easier.

does it void the warranty?
o12388985 2 years ago
In theory, yes. But then again, I got the cheapest warranty I could get, so I'm not really all that worried about it.
anguish79 2 years ago
and by the way, you could definitely fit all 3 of your vids into ONE ten minute video. it was a bit long.
alexnguyen103 2 years ago
Well, yeah, that I could have. I babbled a bit, but with some better editing, I could very easily have done that.
anguish79 2 years ago
CAKE! thanks for your vid, was able to do it in 10 mins.
alexnguyen103 2 years ago
what camera are you using? is a panasonic GS-xxx? great video quality =)
alexnguyen103 2 years ago
Yeah, it's a Panasonic. IIRC, it's a Panasonic SDR-H200. Bought it before my son was born in January of 2008. Takes some pretty impressive video in my opinion, although I do have a few minor gripes about it.
anguish79 2 years ago
i got mine upgraded to 4GB ram yeah boy..ahahahaha
moraomar1 2 years ago
jesus christ dell, how much worse can you make a ram upgrade be for people, especially when you don't even offer 2GB in the first place
thanks for the videos, hope i don't break shit

I changed my dell mini 10v RAM easily with your video help. I swapped with DELL 2 GB (PC2 6400) DDR2 800MHz ($35 in eBay).
Thanks.
anandsoft 2 years ago
Dell brand is good quality but they are always behind in specs and overly priced compare to their competitors...case in point: Mini 9...and now they almost builted a perfect mini 10v but behind again with only 1 gig ram and a pain in the ass 2 gig ram upgrade...come dell , do ur research and be ahead of the game.
DJTEVAdotCOM 2 years ago 3
Dell Mini 10v, just ordered one like these. Takes 4 weeks to get and only the 1GB RAM was possible... This video might become handy for me!
