Everyone in Michigan calls a group of people guys, don't know how it started but it drives my friend from Florida nuts.

"You guys" is a construction that many english dialects use to make up for the fact that the 2nd person singular and 2nd person plural pronoun have both become "you" (when they used to be, well, "thou" and "ye", respectively).

So ya, it's a bit silly right now, but just wait 200 years and it'll have merged into "yigges" or something and no-one will remember what it used to be. :)

Or just crib "y'all" or "yinz" or whatever from a different dialect, I guess?

yeah, it makes no sense. calling girls "guys" is almost like calling them lesbian, you don't call men "ladies" so WTF?
